"Please let the berserk demons kill you,"
The team cursed under breaths, looking at the four berserk D-rank demons.
"Maximus, why are you doing this?!" Liana shouted.
Maximus tilted his head. "Why? Because it is meant to be. Do not fight fate. I have no choice."
"What nonsense?!" Cedric barked. "We trusted you."
"Exactly," Maximus faced him. "You shouldn't have. Too bad you're just finding out—."
"You speak a lot, snake," Selena said, casually, adjusting her sleeves. Her playful demeanour was long lost.
At first glance someone who hadn't seen her a few minutes would think she never smiles. The aura she exuded became oppressing, even for the team.
"You betrayed, yes, we get it, we're sad, you win. So shut your damn mouth," she said, raising her head to lock her intensely focused eyes with his. "Are you going to start conducting or should I do so for you?"
One blink was all it took, and Selena closed the large distance between her and Maximus, dagger drawn back.
Maximus gritted, eyes widening as she approached him, but a D-rank demon interrupted and she attacked it instead.
Maximus stumbled to the ground. "Who is she? Why is she here? Where the hell did he find her from?" he grumbled, clenching the dirt, knuckles whitening.
The rest of the D-rank demons started their attack in the rest of the team.
"Everyone stay close!" Liana ordered as they made a circle.
Cedric charged in at the first one, parrying its attacks with incredible speed. After blocking an attacking and pushing it back, he ran past it, causing it to follow him.
'Come on, let's go. A little farther from the team,' he thought as he could hear the thud of its footsteps behind him.
The others on the other hand—Alexander, Finn, Kayra and Selam—were facing one. The more they looked at the berserk demons, the more pictures of Rum's death flashed in their minds.
A new sense of responsibility washed over the entire team, as if this was a mission to avenge the death of their fallen comrade.
Even Kayra's fear was overridden by her will to see the demon's end. However, they were still getting beaten up badly.
Alexander—though very young—had become quite skilled, even more than a lot of Novice-ranks in the guild, all thanks to Nolan.
And one thing Nolan always remarked, was his adaptability. According to Nolan, his memory was not only good at painting perfect pictures of something he had seen before, but it also was creative in the sense that, it let him avoid the mistakes of others—if his body let him—allowing him to adapt, even on the go.
A certain attack came towards Finn and it looked just like one Cedric had failed to intercept yesterday.
Alexander quickly raised his sword—the blood trickling from his forehead blurring the vision of his left eye, ready to strike. Immediately the demon's hand got close enough, he yelled, "Finn, duck!"
Instinctively, Finn ducked and just as the hand reached the area where Finn's head had just been, Alexander slashed with all his might, almost completely severing its hand—though it was just being held by a little flesh.
Seeing the opening, Kayra—bruised—aimed her spear and launched it at the demon's shoulder. It stabbed the demon and remained there.
She turned to Selam and somehow, they were both thinking of the same thing.
When the demon reached to pull it out, Finn slashed at its knee, making roar in pain. It then sent him crashing into a tree, coughing out blood.
During this short time, Kayra ran towards Selam who put his hands together. She put her leg on his hand and he launched her into the air.
"Thank youuu," she said as she kicked off a tree, used the spear in the demon's shoulder to as a step, then putting all her strength to her lower body, she drew her leg back and connected her boot to the demon's face with a sickening crunch.
"How? How? How? How is any of this possible?" Maximus gritted, hands shaking in rage.
Just what did Nolan do again that has made them strong enough to face the berserk D-ranks?
"But they won't last long. They should not," Maximus grunted.
Liana on the other hand was efficiently landing brutal blows on the demon, every strike driven by a primal rage.
She was venting out all the pent up frustration and guilt she had been holding in since yesterday.
She jumped up and struck its torso with a clean slash, but it quickly recovered slammed its hand into her side, one of its claws penetrating her skin.
She coughed out blood and fell to the ground, her sword leaving her hand.
Cedric got distracted by that and got punched heavily in the stomach. "Ack!" he coughed blood as he was sent flying up into a tree.
He hit the tree and it broke due to the force. It came down on Alexander and the others and they escaped, except Selam who didn't get out of the way in time.
The tree landed on the demon, but also landed on Selam's foot, trapping him in place.
Selena who had just stabbed her daggers through a demon's neck continuously and cut off its head—turned to the others.
She pushed off the collapsing body of the demon and landed gracefully, before running to help the others.
She helped Alexander and the others lift the tree, enough for Selam to pull out his, now fractured leg.
The demon under the tree however, could not get out of the situation on time, before Kayra pulled out her spear from its shoulder and started stabbing its head.
Selena was contemplating on which of the other demons to face, but then she stopped.
Liana slowly reached for her sword and helped herself up, spitting out blood. She pulled out a vial of Royal Clover potion and poured on her wound and drank it the rest.
"What's with the look?" Liana said, looking at Selena with calm eyes as her demon approached her. "I never said I was done, did I?"
A chuckle suddenly came from the side, and a bruised Cedric stood up, dusting his uniform. He took off his cap and tossed it in the ground. He started hoping and then he suddenly stopped. "Does everyone enjoy a hard fight or am I just a lunatic?"
