Council Leader Vorik stood in the doorway of Renn's home. He needed to find out if Mia was willing to speak with her uncle Krem, the scout leader of the scout team he and his men had intercepted.
The domes were on a complete lockdown. There were still those constructing more domes, but a blast shield was protecting them as they worked. They had to take precautions in the event the Kreq Commander ordered a full attack on the domes.
Council Leader Vorik pressed the call button, letting Renn know he was at his door. He had waited for Mia to get the courage to let him know, but she was reluctant to be the one to make any plans. Vorik had decided to come and check on her, to see if she was ready.
The door to Renn's home slid open, revealing Renn looking out at him. Behind him, Mia sat on the floor, placing a puzzle piece on one of her many puzzles. It was something that she liked. It kept her busy. The action prevented her thoughts from wandering to her fears and what had happened to her.
Renn made the gesture of respect before stepping to the side, letting Council Leader Vorik inside.
Mia looked up. Seeing Vorik, she spoke nonchalantly before anyone else could speak. "I am ready to talk to my uncle Krem," she stated, then looked back down at her puzzle, locking a piece into place before she stood up.
"Would you like Renn to accompany you?" Vorik asked. He kept his voice gentle, not wanting to upset or frighten her. He knew his voice had to remain quiet.
Mia nodded. "I will speak with my uncle, but I want Renn and you to come, too. I don't know him, and my uncle's people are trying to hurt us. I don't want to go alone," she confessed quietly.
Council Leader Vorik was a little shocked that she wanted him to go with her, too. Shaking the shock off, he smiled kindly. It pleased him that she was finally trusting him. "We are ready when you are. If you want to go now, I will take you to speak with your uncle."
Mia looked down at her gown, then frowned. "I want to change first." Then she ran into the back bedroom to change. When she came back, she was wearing a thicker gown which had small flowers printed around the bottom hem and sleeves, and was a mint green color rather than the white one she normally wore.
"Are you ready?" Vorik asked, holding out a hand for her to take. She was leery about going out in public, and he knew she would want support.
Mia took his hand willingly, shocking him further. He had offered his hand, but didn't expect her to actually take it. Renn took her other hand before they left Renn's home and headed toward the cells where Krem and his scout team were being held.
Mia looked around her at all the sights. Looking up, she watched the flickering of the blast shields as they headed to their destination. "Will those shields prevent them from shooting us?" Mia asked, looking at Vorik. She remembered watching her family's home being destroyed when the invasion of the Ramesians first started. It was the last thing she saw before Travis covered her eyes.
"They will withstand very powerful firepower. Even our own blast cannons, which are far more powerful than your father's people's weapons." Vorik told her, smiling. His voice lowered. "We want to try to save your father's people. Remember the serum we talked about? Well, we know they are being controlled. We want to find a way to counteract the serum their leader is using on them. We can't take it out of them like we do the zombies. We have to find another way."
Mia nodded. She remembered the conversation. It was the first time she spoke to Council Leader Vorik. It was clear she understood. She smiled up at him. "You'll find a way," she said confidently. "I want my father's people to be safe, too. It's not their fault they do bad things."
Renn and Vorik eyed each other as Mia continued to look around her. She didn't notice the silent communication between the two. Vorik and Renn had the same thoughts. They knew that their own people didn't have that excuse. They invaded Earth without a second thought. Now they were trying to fix the damage they had done under their former leader's order. They shared the guilt among the entire Ramesian race.
When Council Leader Vorik, Renn, and Mia reached the cells, a guard opened the main door, letting them in. Both Renn and Vorik noted her grip tightening when the guard came too close. She didn't like being around others she didn't know or trust.
They led her to an interrogation room. She flinched at the coldness. It wasn't cold in temperature. It was cold in aesthetics. It reminded her of the room Travis Nicoles kept her locked in.
Renn bent down, wanting to reassure her. "It will be okay," he told her. "We won't leave you alone unless you want us to."
Mia nodded, looking up at Renn, then at Vorik as if she wanted him to reassure her as well. He smiled down at her, nodding. "We won't leave you alone unless you request it."
There was visible relief on Mia's face. She nodded, then continued to look around her cautiously. She kept her grip tight, but didn't falter in her steps.
They arrived at the interrogation room, went in, and sat behind a table; three chairs were set for them. Mia chose to sit in Renn's lap instead. She didn't want to sit in the chair alone. She didn't feel safe. She knew Renn would protect her and knew he wouldn't do anything to her, so she stayed as close to him as she could.
Moments later, two guards escorted Krem into the interrogation room. His eyes zoned in on his niece. He swallowed visibly. His eyes filled with unshed tears the moment he saw her.
Mia watched silently as he was brought in. She didn't say anything.
Krem's eyes didn't waver from her. The room remained silent for several minutes. Renn, Vorik, and the guards were there for support. It was Mia and Krem who needed to be the ones to speak. It was already briefed that they needed to give Mia and Krem all the time they needed. Only when Mia asked to leave would they leave.
After several long moments of silence, Krem finally cleared his throat. "Hello," he choked out. He was trying not to burst into tears.
Mia didn't say anything. She carefully slid off of Renn's lap and went to the other side of the table, and stood in front of her uncle. It appeared that she was trying to work up the courage to do something.
After what seemed like hours, she finally wrapped her arms around him and hugged him, not saying anything.
The dam broke, and Krem sobbed into her shoulder. Neither spoke. They stayed like that. With Krem locked in shackles, sobbing in Mia's embrace.
Silently, Vorik sent a message to bring in one of the other Kreq prisoners. He wanted to see if the two, bonding as they were, could dissipate the serum in the others. They could only chance one prisoner being taken out of their cell at a time.
Four guards brought in one of the prisoners. Mia and Krem were still locked in an embrace, not seeing the newcomer. Both Krem and Mia had tears in their eyes.
As if by nature, Mia, ignoring the newcomer who was eyeing them with disdain, pulled away and rested her forehead on her uncle's; A wave of energy shot through them. The prisoner's eyes widened as he looked at his scout leader and the young Mia. He shook his head as if trying to clear his head.
That gave the information that they needed. Vorik and Renn looked at each other, then immediately, Council Leader Vorik called for the other Kreq prisoners to be brought in.
The guards understood the situation and left as quickly as they could to bring in the other Kreq prisoners before Krem and Mia broke apart.
There were a total of eight Kreq prisoners, counting Krem. They put them as close as was safe to Krem and Mia. The same thing happened. The remaining six prisoners shook their heads as if trying to clear their heads. Nearly five minutes later, they all looked around, confused. The serum had dissipated.
Counciul Leader Vorik, by watching what had happened, had just realized that it wasn't just the bond but the mingling of souls when Mia and Krem connected by touching their foreheads. The combination, together, was what cured the Kreqs of the influence of the injections their leader had forced on them. Vorik smiled. The Kreq prisoners were no longer puppets for their commander.
After thinking for a while as he watched the display in front of him, Vorik's smile widened. If the familiar bond could cure this group, it could help cure all of them.
Krem and Mia stayed unmoving, with their foreheads touching. Silent tears fell down their cheeks as their souls mingled, and the rest of the Kreq scout team looked at them in awe.
