Earth's Last Days: The Invasion

Chapter 116: 116: Information and Eavesdropper

Nevle watched as Krem and Tran walked out of the building. They couldn't tell what the building was, only that it wasn't a residence. Behind them were their two guards. Not far behind the two guards were two couples. One looked remarkably like Krem; only there wasn't a light green tint to her skin. She was holding the hand of one of the Ramesians. Then there was a girl with golden blonde hair and ice-blue eyes. She held the hand of the Ramesian beside her.

Nevle looked at his crew. "We need to find a way to follow that group." He knew for a fact that following them would allow them to receive a great deal of information. They were ordered to find out more, but they weren't close enough to them to hear anything. They couldn't enter the dome, so they had to find a way to get close enough to Krem's group to hear their conversation.

In the end, they didn't have to find a way; it turned out. The blonde girl and her Ramesian left the rest of the group, going deeper into the dome city and disappearing out of sight. Krem's group headed for a park area that stretched all the way against the side of the dome, where Nevle and his scouts were watching. Krem's group was coming closer to them.

Nevle and his men knew that they couldn't touch the dome, but Krem and the girl with the three Ramesians were close enough to them to be able to hear every word without difficulty. It was like standing with them, listening to the conversation. It was convenient that they had chosen that specific spot to rest.

Krem's group sat on the grass beside the wall of the plasma dome, only a few feet from Nevle and his team. The Ramesian holding the girl's hand sat down, pulling the girl into his lap, with Krem sitting beside them, and then Tran. The two guards remained standing, guarding the small group.

Krem was looking at the girl in the Ramesian's lap. "Will you tell me about your life?" Krem asked the girl who looked like him.

She smiled warmly in response. "My father, Jevin, escaped Krogen and crashed on this planet with his mother because he wanted to save her life and for him not to be controlled by the serum. He was injured in the crash, so his mother helped him to safety. When she did, she met my mother and grandfather. My father was unconscious at the time. She had asked them for help, and they gave it. When my father woke up, he looked at my mother and knew they were meant to be mates," she started. She smiled at the remembrance of her parents and grandparents. They had always been a close-knit family.

Krem looked at her and smiled, taking in what she had told him. "He found a mate with your mother's people?" he asked, smiling. This gave him hope. That meant they were compatible with this planet's population. He wondered if his people were compatible with the Ramesians as well.

Mia nodded. "My older sister was named after my father's mother, Terrie. I was named after my mother's mother. Her name was Mia."

This was the first time that Nevle had heard the girl's name. He smiled, unable to help himself. He liked the girl's name.

Nevle and his team listened to the story in awe. They couldn't help it. One of their own people had escaped Krogen, crashed landed on this planet, found a mate, and produced children. It was a good story.

Krem smiled. "I am an uncle to two girls?" he asked. This brought him joy.

Mia suddenly became sad. She shook her head. A tear ran down her cheek. "When the invasion started, one of the beams was shot into our home. My parents and grandparents were inside. So was my sister. I wasn't there because my sister's ex-boyfriend kidnapped me. It was only seconds before the beam hit our home."

This made Krem mad. Nevle was also angry. He didn't like to hear that the girl's family had been killed by the invasion of the Ramesians or that someone who had been close to her sister had kidnapped her. He realized that the girl had been through a lot. It was too much for someone so young.

Then the words that shocked all of them were spoken. Krem looked down at the grass and began to speak slowly. His voice trembled as he spoke. "Commander Grev made a deal with the Ramesian Council Leader. Tosh was his name. Tosh was ordered to destroy everyone on this planet so the people of Krogen could move to it. The trade-off was this planet for the serum that would control the Ramesian soldiers. It is Grev's fault that the Ramesians invaded this planet."

Mia studied Krem. "Are you saying that Tosh gave the serum to his people so that they would invade this planet?" she asked him. "That means they were controlled, forced to do it against their will."

"Yes, he did. He gave them a fake vaccine, saying that this planet was toxic. For those who didn't take the fake vaccine, Tosh added it to their food so that they would still consume the serum. They were told that they needed the vaccine to stay safe from the toxin," he explained. "He also gave them a toxin that was just the serum in another form and told them that if they used the toxin in their blasters against the people of this planet, it would kill them all."

Mia wiped the tears from her eyes. "I'm glad Niki killed him then," she sobbed. She understood that the Ramesians killed most of Earth's population because they were controlled by Tosh in the same manner as the Kreq were controlled by Grev. It made her heart hurt knowing it. This entire invasion, all the deaths, everything led to Commander Grev.

This got Krem's attention. It also got Nevle's and his men's attention. "A woman killed the Ramesian Council Leader?" He was in shock. The women of his people were weak, unable to do anything but produce children and raise them. Nothing else.

Mia nodded. "My father said that the women of your planet are weak because your leader wants them that way. He also said that the mating bond was forbidden because it dissipated the serum that he injected into the soldiers. He doesn't want to lose control of them, so he won't allow bonds of any kind. He doesn't allow mating bonds or familiar or even friendship bonds."

Shock washed through not only Krem and Tran, but also Nevle and his scout team. This was information they didn't know. Nevle and his men leaned in to hear more.

Tears fell down Krem's cheeks, dripping onto the grass. He was learning a lot. He didn't know how his brother knew any of that. He didn't even know most of it. Mia saw the tears and carefully slid off Renn's lap and went to Krem. She rested her forehead on his, trying to comfort him. The wave of energy passed through them, easing his emotional pain and calming him. Her actions had comforted him.

Nevle gasped. So did all of his men. The wave of energy blasted through the plasma dome and washed over them all. It was something they had never felt before, nor had they expected to feel anything like it.

Once Mia felt that Krem was comforted, they continued their conversation. "What else did he say?" Krem asked quietly.

Mia sat carefully in her uncle's lap. "He told me that when your commander gives an order, the serum forces you to obey. He said that when he watched, he saw that when an order was given, the soldier became stiff. Their face relaxed. He called it Slack. Then they would obey the order exactly, even if it was to kill themselves. They would still do it without hesitation."

Krem thought about it for a moment. "Yes, I believe that is true. It is something that we fear. We fear he will give the order to end ourselves." Krem smiled. "I don't have to obey that order or any other now because you saved me."

Nevle became angry after hearing Krem's words. He wanted to yell out that she wasn't his mate. He didn't know why, but he knew she wasn't, but he was talking to her like she was. Mate bonds were forbidden. They would both die if Grev found out. Krem and Mia were doomed if Commander Grev found out. He had completely forgotten that they had said that he was her uncle.

Nevle stepped back from the dome, and his men followed. "I feel different," he whispered. "Something is different." He couldn't figure out what had happened. He knew it was the blast of energy that washed past them that did something, but he didn't know what it had done.

All the surrounding men nodded in agreement. Something had changed with their small group. He just didn't know what it was.
