Earth's Last Days: The Invasion

Chapter 125: 125: A Conversation of Interest.

Jada weaved her way through the dome, going in between bushes and the rows of small homes, sniffing the air as she went. Council Leader Vorik and Orik followed behind her, wondering what was going on.

"I probably look like a dog following a scent. I'm not a dog, but yes, I'm following a scent." She told them, giggling. She was laughing at herself because she was comparing herself to a dog following a scent trail. She remembered having a hunting dog with them when she went hunting with her family. The dog would run ahead of them, following the scent of the animal they were hunting, then would indicate to them where the animal was located so they could shoot it.

"What's a dog?" Council Leader Vorik asked Orik, confused, as they followed close behind Jada. Orik shrugged in response, having no idea what a dog was, either.

"Didn't you guys have pets on your home planet?" she asked them, still moving forward, sniffing the air as she went. "Dogs are the pets that you throw a ball for, and then they bring it back to you so that you can throw it again. It's a game you play with them called 'fetch.'" She explained. "Dogs also guard and protect their owners. They're usually pretty good at that. You can teach them things, like sit, stay, or lie down as well. We had a dog that we taught how to play dead. It was hilarious."

Council Leader Vorik shrugged, shaking his head, not knowing what she was talking about, and continued following her through the small neighborhood they were weaving through. After weaving through several areas, Jade suddenly stopped and pressed her finger to her lips for them not to speak. She pointed to her ear and mouthed, 'Listen.'

They were between two buildings, behind a large bush that hid them from the path in front of them. Jada had peered around the corner of one of the small dwellings as she listened in on whoever was speaking.

Council Leader Vorik and her mate, Orik, nodded, understanding her gesture. They bent toward the direction Jada was indicating and listened intently as they peeked around the corner; their eyes widened when they saw who they were listening to.

Peeking around the corner, they saw Dreg hiding behind a bush and speaking on a Kreq communicator. It was something he shouldn't have, and they had no idea how he had gotten it into the dome. They were brought in completely naked. "Sir, they are going to send a cloaked ship to spy on the disks." He was saying. It was already clear by the way he was speaking that it was Commander Grev that he was talking to, and he was telling the Kreq leader what they were talking about in their meeting.

Jada looked at Council Leader Vorik, then her mate, raising one brow. She knew Dreg was a spy. She knew when she tried to get his serum to disperse during their meeting. It was why she had wanted Mia, Renk, and Renn to come 'calm' her. It didn't work, no matter how long the two couples bonded.

She had noticed that the way he was acting after his family was killed was not normal. Out of the many things that she had noticed him doing or acting like that didn't make sense, was that he seemed to want to know things that had no bearing on him, such as where Nevle's mate was. She worried that he was going to try to kill her because of the bond. If he were a spy, it was a real possibility that he would try to do just that. That included, possibly, trying to harm either Renk or Renn as well. It wasn't that he wanted to know; it was how he asked. It didn't make sense.

As they continued to listen, Commander Grev's voice came over the communicator. "Is that all you found out?" he growled, not satisfied with the small piece of information. "We can easily take out a small ship. That's not information; that's a nuisance. It's hard to believe we are of the same blood. You're my brother's son. I ate him. I can eat you too!" Commander Grev growled, angry at the lack of information his nephew was giving him.

Jada shivered at the thought of him actually eating his brother. It sounded like that's what he did regularly. An image of the Kreq people in a large cow barn appeared in her mind, waiting to be slaughtered and used for Grev's food. She shivered again as she continued to listen in on Dreg's conversation with his uncle.

Dreg, ignoring Commander Grev's comment, continued his report. "I discovered that the new leader is Vorik, sir," Dreg continued. "I also discovered that it was a female named Niki who killed Tosh and gave the leadership to Vorik. Vorik was the fleet commander during the Ramesian invasion of this planet."

"I'm sure you have more information than that," Commander Grev chided. "I taught you better than that."

Dreg sighed heavily, then continued. "The girl who challenged you is not entirely human. She was infected by the serum and changed into something stronger. It didn't work on her as it did on the others. She has enhanced speed and strength. She was the one who tried to stop the guards from killing my mother and siblings, but she didn't get there in time."

"Yet you stood by and watched," Grev chuckled. He found it amusing that his nephew watched his family being executed and didn't try to do anything about it.

"I had no choice," Dreg stated. His tone was even. It was clear he was trying to control his tone. "I told you I would be there. Is that why you chose them?" Dreg asked with a touch of sarcasm in his tone. "Did you choose them because you knew I would be there?" he asked evenly.

"Don't be stupid." Grev spat out. Then a sudden playfulness entered his tone. "I chose them because you wanted me to," he chuckled, then turned serious. "When are they sending a cloaked ship to spy on us?"

"I don't know, sir. That was not discussed. The plan is not complete. They hadn't decided on when they were going to send the spy ship," Dreg continued to explain. "I will continue to listen and tell you more as soon as I hear it myself."

There was silence for a few moments before Commander Grev spoke again.

"How many scouts are no longer controlled by the serum?" Commander Grev pressed. "Are any of them helping you?"

"No, sir. All of them have the serum dissipated," Dreg explained. "Scout Leader Krem is the uncle of a human here. Scout Leader Nevle is her mate. Scout Renk also has a mate. A male by the name of Renn."

"How could Scout Renk have a male mate?" he asked, sounding shocked and confused. Before Dreg could speak, Grev continued. "Is his mate human or Ramesian?" Commander Grev asked, sounding interested. It sounded like a plan was forming. Commander Grev always had a plan.

"Renn is a Ramesian, sir," Dreg reported.

The communication went silent for several minutes. Dreg waited patiently for his leader to speak again. Dreg figured that whatever Commander Grev was planning would come out sooner or later. When it did, someone always died.

The soft sound of the communicator coming back on echoed softly. "Do you have any more information for me?" Commander Grev asked. His voice was hard, his disgust with his nephew apparent in his tone. He was given a lot of information, but not enough to do anything yet.

"Only that the females are much stronger than our kind," Dreg explained.

"They can be broken just like our own females," Grev chuckled. "Our own females were much stronger before I took leadership from my predecessor. I put a stop to that quickly. Now, go find out more information." He ordered. His voice was hard.

"Yes, sir," Dreg stated, then closed the communication. He stuffed the device in his pocket and rushed away, trying not to be seen.

They watched silently while Dreg rushed off toward the Kreq homes where he was assigned. Jada turned to Council Leader Vorik. "The soul-mingling isn't curing him. I don't know why," she told them. "We need to figure out why it doesn't affect him." Jada paused, looking in the direction Dreg had gone. "It could be because he is Commander Grev's nephew. The same bloodline as his." She stood in thought, looking down the path Dreg had disappeared. "I think we should act like we don't know he's spying. I think we can feed him information to mislead Commander Grev. We can use his spying to give us the upper hand."

Council Leader Vorik smiled, understanding exactly what Jada was saying. "In spying for Commander Grev, we can use that to direct what happens," he stated, confirming Jada's words.

Jada grinned widely. "That's exactly what I'm trying to say.
