Council Leader Vorik stood in his council chamber. He was missing his mate. He had sent her down in the tunnels with many of the humans to keep her and their infant twins safe. They still had more humans to send down there. A lot more.
Guard Commander Drevick stood beside him. Each of them had a protective palm shield in case they came under fire. They also kept a cloaking device with them at all times. A blaster hung on their belts; they wore full battle armor. They knew they needed to be prepared for anything.
The rotation at the tunnel entrance guards was set up, making sure Van and Xant had the shift that would give them the most cover as they sent in groups of humans and their mates and children. It had been nearly two weeks. On all the nights that Van and Xant took the guard post, was when they spent the night moving humans into the tunnels. All were cloaked and sent under the cover of night.
Only those already in the tunnels and those being taken to the tunnels were the only ones that knew what was going on. They didn't want to take chances of someone they know and trust was in the militia.
"Have there been any reports of attacks in the human dome?" Council Leader Vorik asked the guard commander.
"Not yet," Drevick responded. "We interrogated all the guards of the domes under truth serum. None of them indicated their involvement. Communications have been halted. Only you or I can communicate between the domes or the fleet ships."
Vorik nodded, thinking. "Then it might be this dome alone," he thought aloud. "We need to make sure it stays that way."
"It appears that way, but I don't want to think that and then have it turn out to be wrong. We need to find the leader of this group and send him to the cells to be interrogated. He would be the best one to tell us who the others are. Each one we capture can only give a few names. The list of names is seemingly endless. I worry about Aleigha. She refuses to go into the tunnels. Her sister is watching both of their sons down there. She wants to end the threat. She said their children have no future until the threat is handled," Guard Commander Drevick complained.
Vorik turned to the guard commander; one eye lifted. "Is Aleigha your mate? You seem very protective of her."
"She made an impression on me the day I walked her to her sister's dwelling," he stated cryptically. "Besides, she is very defensive with me. I know she doesn't trust me. Remember also that I executed her mate."
"A mate that was trying to have her killed," Vorik pointed out. "No one deserves what he did to her. Seven weeks of being with Termera, which severed the bond. Then he blamed it on her and tried to have her killed for something he did. It was most likely to hide the fact that it was he who severed it and not Aleigha."
The council chamber door slid open, and Aleigha walked in. Her hair was a mess. There was blood on her cheek. Council Leader Vorik eyed Drevick for his reaction, but he didn't give any. Shrugging, Council Leader Vorik turned back to Aleigha.
"What happened to you?" Drevick asked before Vorik could ask her himself. Drevick's features were filled with panic. "Why is there blood on your face?"
Vorik turned to look at Drevick. "Are you sure you're not?" he asked, not completing the sentence knowing that Drevick would understand the question completely.
Aleigha, ignoring their questions, looked between the two. "I've been listening to conversations while cloaked. You didn't tell Medic Kaul anything, did you?" Aleigha stated evenly, looking between Vorik and Drevick. Without letting them answer, she stepped back out of the council chamber and then returned seconds later, dragging an unconscious Medic Kaul back inside.
Both men gasped. Aleigha held one hand up, gesturing for them not to move. "Did you tell Kaul anything?" she repeated. She was now glaring at the two men in front of her.
"Only those in the tunnels know. They find out as we send them to the tunnels," Vorik stated, looking at his unconscious friend. "Kaul knows nothing yet."
Aliegha dumped Medic Kaul on the floor and stepped forward, handing an injector of truth serum to Vorik. "Interrogate him," she stated evenly. It was a clear order.
"On what grounds?" Council Leader Vorik asked, his voice turning hard. He didn't like the tone she was giving him. Kaul was his friend. He didn't like seeing him unconscious on the floor either.
"Trust me, interrogate him," Aleigha pressed. "You've trusted me before. Haven't you noticed that ever since the residue happened, he has acted differently? Where is his mate and son? Why haven't we seen either one of them? Even with the baby, she used to come to the clinic with him to help out. Where is she now? Where is the baby? I want to know," she demanded angrily.
"How did you get him here without being seen?" Drevick asked her, his eyes not wavering from her face. He kept discreetly looking for injuries. "You only have one cloaking shield. Each of you would need one."
"We have 20 cloaking shields at our disposal. I used one to bring him in. Don't worry, it's accounted for," Aleigha told him evenly. "Interrogate him. If he's innocent, then fine, I'll admit that I'm wrong. If not. Well, He might not be. The conversation was questionable. It was between Medic Dran, a guard by the name of Nic, and him," she said, pointing to Kaul. "You should probably bring the other two in to interrogate them too. I could only bring one at a time."
Council Leader Vorik pulled a chair next to Medic Kaul and then pulled his unconscious body up onto it. Once Kaul was in the chair, Council Leader Vorik picked up the injector, letting it hover over Kaul's neck. He was undecided about jabbing his friend with the truth serum.
With resolve, Vorik Jabbed the injector into Kaul's neck; the pain of it woke him up instantly. His face suddenly went slack. His eyes were unfocused, staring at nothing.
"Where is your mate?" Council Leader Vorik asked. He was standing in front of his friend. A pinch of guilt in his soul.
Kaul spoke in a monotone voice, his eyes out of focus, seeming to stare at nothing. "Gone," he stated.
"Did you harm or kill your mate?" Vorik shot the question so fast that it made Aleigha and Drevick flinch.
"Yes," Kaul stated.
"Where is your infant?" Vorik shot out another question. There was nearly no space between one question and the next. The shock of the information made his face pale.
"Gone," Kaul stated.
"Did you do something to harm or kill your infant?" Vorik asked, his voice becoming shaky. His gut told him he knew the answer but had to hear it for himself.
"Yes," Kaul stated.
"Are your mate and son dead?" Vorik asked between clenched teeth.
"Yes," Kaul stated.
Aleigha couldn't stop the tears that fell. The truth serum had confirmed what she had suspected. Julie was a sweet girl who didn't deserve whatever he had done to her. Her baby was even more innocent.
Guard Commander Drevick noticed and moved beside her, putting an arm around her and pulling her close to try and comfort her.
She allowed it, even resting her cheek on his chest. She was too much in pain at hearing Kaul confess than to argue with him.
"Why?" Vorik growled. Shock and anger filled him.
"She was human. Her child was a half-breed," Kaul stated, his monotone response not wavering. "Humans are the only problem on this planet. All attacks come from them. All threats come from them. We need to destroy all of them before they destroy us all."
"Did you kill Jada's fetus intentionally?" Vorik shot out, remembering Jada telling him that he acted like he didn't even care.
"Yes," Kaul spoke. His eyes focused on nothing. His face was slack. "I fixed the file, making it seem like it was the residue."
"Why?" Vorik hissed.
"Another half-breed. I knew everyone would believe it was because of the residue. The fetus was clean. I didn't want it to be born, so I killed it."
"Are Medic Dran and Guard Nic part of the militia?" Vorik asked evenly.
"Yes," Kaul responded.
"So you know of the militia against the humans of the dome?" Vorik shot the question. It was clear he was livid at the medic.
"Yes," he stated in his monotone voice.
"Is it only this dome?" Vorik continued to question between clenched teeth.
"Yes, we haven't been able to communicate outside this dome yet," he stated in his monotone speech. "All communications have been severed between the domes and the ships."
Vorik looked over at Drevick, his eyes blazing, before turning back to Medic Kaul.
"Do you know who leads it?" Vorik growled as he continued.
"Yes," Kaul stated.
"Why doesn't anyone else know who leads it? Who leads the militia?" Vorik growled out both questions one after the other before even the first one was answered.
Medic Kaul only responded to the first one. "If they go under the truth serum, they could name who it is," Kaul responded in his monotone voice.
"Who leads the militia!" Vorik yelled. He leaned forward, his face only inches from Kaul's.
"I do," Kaul responded. Still monotone.
Council Leader Vorik's face paled.
"Don't kill him until you find out as many names as possible so we can end this," Aleigha suggested through her tears. "We can't end it if someone takes his place."
Council Leader Vorik turned to Drevick, who was still trying to comfort Aleigha. "Before you take him to the cells. Make sure you know who all the guards are that are in his militia. We know of two. We don't want him in the cells if the guards in his militia are going to break him out. Find out which medics are also part of it. Medics can do a lot of damage. With each name you get, interrogate each one of them to find more. Keep all guards away from him. I don't want him to escape."
Aleigha swallowed, tears spilling down, soaking the cloth covering Drevick's chest. "Keep him sedated. There are secret rooms in the tunnels that I found that we can store him. No one knows about these rooms. After I was arrested, I knew I shouldn't say anything. Now I'm really glad I didn't."
Vorik Looked at Aleigha. "I'm glad you didn't."
