Earth's Last Days: The Invasion

Chapter 191: 191: New Living Arrangements and A Lead

Miles pulled Ver through the door of his dwelling. Dan was in the kitchen area ordering some sort of hot beverage from the replicator. He turned to look at Miles as he entered. Seeing Ver, he smiled widely, his eyes going to their interlocked hands. His smile grew.

"I take it that you two are mates?" he asked, grinning.

Miles relaxed, seeing Dan smiling when he saw his and Ver's hands together. He had been worried that Dan liked Ver and would be upset about the two of them being mates.

"Yes," Miles told him. He kissed the back of Ver's hand he was holding. Ver giggled in response.

Dan chuckled. "I guess I should call Council Leader Vorik and let him know I'm going back to the dorm. Mated pairs get the dwellings, and since you two are clearly mated, you should keep this one."

Downing his beverage, Dan placed the cup on the replicator to dematerialize it, then headed out of the dwelling. Before the door closed, Dan turned to Miles. "I'm going to the dorm," he said, smiling. "I'll talk to you tomorrow."

Miles smiled. "Thank you, Dan."

Dan nodded, took one last look at the couple, and left.

Ver went to a wall panel inside the kitchen and pressed a couple of buttons. She turned to Miles. We have to notify Council Leader Vorik," she explained shyly.

The panel beeped several times before Council Leader Vorik's voice came through the small speaker. "This is Council Leader Vorik," he answered.

"Sir, this is Ver from the tavern. I was walking home from work when I bumped into Miles. He is my mate. Dan Wilson is headed back to the dorms. He said that since Miles and I are mates, we should stay in the dwelling. I live in the Ramesian dorm. We need permission to change our living arrangements, and we need help changing the security feature on the dwelling if we are not forbidden, in the new living arrangements," Ver explained.

The sound of Council Leader Vorik chuckling was heard through the small speaker. "I'm in the clinic; I will stop at your dwelling on the way back to change the security. Yes, you do have permission to change the living arrangements. I will be there in a little while."

"Thank you, sir," Ver stated, then pressed another button to turn the communications off. She then turned to Miles. "We have to wait for him," she told Miles.

Dan walked through the small pathways of the dome. He was happy for Miles. He wasn't too thrilled that he had to go back to the dorm, but he was happy for Miles.

Looking around, Dan decided to take a walk before he went back to the dorm. He figured he should probably let someone know that he needed another bed assigned to him, or he wouldn't have a place to sleep. He had to pay attention to the time, though. He had to get back before the staff left for the night. The staff could give him a bed. If he was too late, it would mean he would have to wander the streets all night. It wouldn't be the first time; it wasn't something he wanted to repeat.

As he walked through the small pathways, he heard voices. Standing back into a shadow, he listened.

"They're going to interrogate everyone," one male voice spoke. "They'll find out we had something to do with the injector. We will be executed."

"They're not going to find out. We're not even on the list. The medic didn't see us anywhere near the injector," a second male voice responded to the first one.

Dan peeked around the corner and looked at the two Ramesian males who were speaking. He studied their features, wanting to remember what they looked like. If he were given the serum himself, he hoped his subconscious would be able to recognize them. He hoped he would remember who the two males were. It appeared that he had stumbled on those involved with tampering with an injector. He wasn't sure, though. Turning around, he rushed toward the clinic, hoping to get help before the two males left. The clinic he was headed to was where they were treating some patients in stasis. As he walked inside, he bumped into Council Leader Vorik.

Sighing in relief, he righted himself before he spoke, not giving any time for Vorik to speak. "Sorry, sir. I didn't see you. I was in a hurry. Sir, I overheard two Ramesian males arguing about being interrogated over a tampered-with injector. They were fearful of getting caught. I just left them. They may still be there," he informed him in a rush.

"Show me," Council Leader Vorik demanded.

Dan nodded and walked quickly but quietly to where he heard the two men speaking. "They were right there," he pointed. The area in question had already been vacated. "I know you have the human truth serum now. I studied them. Perhaps my subconscious would be able to tell you who they are. I don't like the sound of someone tampering with an injector. It sounds dangerous."

"Could you recognize them if you saw them again?" Council Leader Vorik asked, watching Dan closely.

"Right now, yes. But I can't guarantee I will if I wait too long to see them again," Dan confessed.

Council Leader Vorik thought about it for a moment. "Come with me," he told Dan, then headed toward the prison.

When they were about to enter the facility's double doors, Guard Commander Drevick was heading out, just about to head to his own dwelling.

Council Leader Vorik stopped him. "Guard Commander, I need a team. You need to be there also. We have a lead on who tampered with the injector. This can't wait," Vorik added.

Guard Commander Drevick went back inside the prison facility, then moments later came out again with four guards. Dan studied the guards. One of them was one of the two men.

Dan looked at the guard in question. Then, he turned to Council Leader Vorik. "That's one of them," he said, pointing to the guard in question. "Unless he has a twin," Dan added.

Guard Commander Drevick looked at his guard. "He does have a twin," he stated.

Council Leader Vorik looked at the guard in question. "Detain him until we can interrogate both of them to determine which one is involved."

The guard put his hands up willingly, accepting the bar shackles. It made Dan believe it may be the twin that was involved, but not his one.

Two of the guards put him in one of the cells away from the prisoner, then, with the guard Commander, followed Council Leader Vorik and Dan.

Going to each of the dwellings in the area where Dan overheard the two men arguing, Council Leader Vorik told each resident that they were looking for someone, but did not give any reason.

Dan studied everyone in each dwelling. It wasn't until the last one, the home of the twin of the guard, that they found who they were looking for. Both the twin and the second Ramesian male were sitting at the counter, drinking strong beverages.

The guards quickly restrained them with the bar shackles and took them to the prison to be interrogated. They allowed Dan to be in the room during their interrogation.

They quickly interrogated the guard, who turned out to be innocent. He knew nothing of what his twin brother was involved with.

Pulling the two prisoners whom Dan had heard arguing into the interrogation room, they placed them each in a restraint chair and prepared them for interrogation.

Quickly injecting the two with truth serum, their faces went slack, eyes unfocused. They stared in front of them, not seeing anything.

Council Leader Vorik stood in front of the first prisoner. "Are you involved with tampering with an injector?"

The prisoner spoke in monotone. He was the twin of the guard. "Yes."

"What did you use to tamper with it?" Vorik asked quickly. He had to get as much information as possible before the truth serum could dissipate from their system.

"A toxin that we found in the tents at the east gate." The guard explained. "It was in a human injector."

"How did you add the toxin to the injector?"

"The needle for the human injector is small. We injected it inside the needle of our injector," he responded in a monotone.

"How many injectors were tampered with?" Vorik questioned.

Still speaking in a monotone, the prisoner responded. "One. We didn't need to tamper with more. We knew it would be replicated."

The guard commander studied the male. "Who all were involved?" Drevick ordered.

The male named four names: Grij, Telise, Morv, and Elser.

Vorik looked at the guard commander. "This prisoner is none of the names he mentioned," Vorik stated. "Elser is that one," he pointed to the second prisoner, waiting to be questioned, then looked at the guards. Bring the other three in immediately."

The guards quickly left. Council Leader Vorik turned to the second prisoner and asked him the same questions. He named the prisoner beside him, as well as the three who were currently being brought in for questioning.

Council Leader Vorik's comm link buzzed. Fleet Commander Lerian's voice came through the communication device. "Council Leader Vorik, Sir," he said over the comm link. "I have interrogated all from my ship who have touched the injector. I did not find anyone involved."

"We have leads from the dome. A total of five so far," Council Leader Vorik responded. "I need you on the surface for the final interrogations."

"On my way, sir," Fleet Commander Lerian stated through the comm link.

Council Leader Vorik and Guard Commander Drevick eyed each other. "It looks like we may have found who tampered with the injector."

Dan smiled at Council Leader Vorik, then at Guard Commander Drevick. "If Miles hadn't found his mate tonight, I would not have been wandering the paths. I guess you can thank Miles for this lead. If it weren't for him, I wouldn't have stumbled on those two talking."

Guard Commander Drevik looked at Dan in disbelief. "Miles, the prisoner we just released, already found his mate?"

Vorik looked at Drevick. "I just found out before Dan bumped into me tonight to tell me about these two," he said, pointing at the two prisoners.

Guard Commander Drevik looked stunned. "Already? Miles found his mate already?"

Dan chuckled. "Yeah. He found Ver."

Drevick's eyes widened. "Ver from the tavern? The white-eyed girl?" he asked. He was still not believing what he was hearing.

Dan nodded. "Yep."

"They are both extremely shy and very quiet," Drevick said as he chuckled. "I guess they're perfect for each other."
