Miles sat in the chair next to Medic Renn. He looked over at his mate before going back to Renn. "Has there been anything that could be used as a neutralizer?" he asked quietly, hopeful.
"Not yet," Medic Renn complained. "Whatever that toxin is, it seems to repel everything but the tissue in their bodies. The computer is still going through the chemicals in the database. It's going to be a while before it finishes with all of them."
Miles turned to Ver, worried. He watched her with the infants. She was feeding one of them. He didn't know which one. Miles was getting worried. There were only three more days, and she would try to save the humans in stasis herself. He wanted to find a cure before then. He just found her; he didn't want to lose her so soon. He knew in his heart that if she tried, she would die.
"Any more ideas?" Medic Renn asked, interrupting Miles's inner babble. "You seem to have some good leads on what might work. We haven't found a solution yet, but what you've come up with so far has been far better than what I could. I need all the options I can get."
Miles hung his head. "You're not about to lose your mate if we fail," he whispered. "I'm just trying to save my mate before she ends up killing herself trying to help them. After today, it's only three more, and she's going to try to save them herself."
Medic Renn studied Miles for a moment. "No, but the four girls are very good friends of mine. They are like family to me. If we fail. I don't lose my mate, but I do lose four of those very close to me. I lose those I consider family."
Miles looked up at the medic, his eyes wet with tears. "I didn't know that. Sorry. Sorry for coming to conclusions like that. I shouldn't have done that."
"Let's just see what we can do to save them all. Your mate and my family," Renn told him quietly before entering the next set of instructions into the computer. He wanted to make sure that if the computer finished going through the chemicals, it would start on the next set of tests immediately. He didn't want to waste even one moment of the time they had left. They were running out of ideas, and they were running out of time.

Fleet Commander Lerian finished with the file regarding white-eyed birth defects. In this one, there was nothing showing why it happened or what it did. Lerian felt that he had wasted valuable time and energy on a file that told him nothing.
Closing the file, he stared at the panel. After several moments, he requested again. "Show me experiments and interviews done with those with white eyes," he stated. "Show me white-eyed specimen," he stated without thinking. His last words jogged his memory. He forgot where he had heard it.
Three files were layered on the screen. When he looked at the first one, he smiled. "Now I'm finding something," he said aloud.
The first one was an interview with a female with white eyes. It was fairly recent. Only about fifteen years old. She had a son who also had white eyes. There was no name showing who the female was or who the boy was.
The file stated that she had taught the boy from a very young age how to heal. She taught him everything she knew. It also showed that just before they left the planet to invade Earth, she had fallen ill and died. She had tried to save someone, and it failed, killing her. Her patient's illness was too complicated for her to heal.
The second file was an experiment done with a white-eyed female. It was older than the previous file, but not by much. It was only a few years older. It almost appeared like it was the same female with the white-eyed son. They had tested her abilities with several others who needed medical help in one of their clinics. She could do a lot. The more severe the illness she healed, the worse it was for her. They had to stop the experiments to prevent her from killing herself while trying to save them.
Fleet Commander Lerian moved to the last file, which was much older than the previous two and was labeled 'white-eyed specimen.'
Lerian smiled. It was the same file he had found as a youth. As he read, he discovered it was the first recorded birth of a Ramesian with white eyes. He understood why the unconscious phrase he used to get the information from the computer jogged his memory. He had heard it before, a long time ago.
Pulling out his commlink, Fleet Commander Lerian called Council Leader Vorik. "Sir, I found the archives regarding white-eyed Ramesians. There are three files. Two are recent, and the third is the one I found as a youth."
Council Leader Vorik's voice came back. "I'm coming to the mother ship. Stay with archives; I will be there as soon as I can. I'm heading to my shuttle now," Vorik said over the comm link before it went silent.
Fleet Commander Lerian put his comm link away and continued to read the files as he waited for Council Leader Vorik to arrive.

Council Leader Vorik rushed through the dome city, heading for his shuttle. Fleet Commander Lerian had found the archives he had known about since he was a child. He wanted to read them, too. He knew that Ver was going to try to save the five in stasis. She didn't say she was, but the way she acted told him she would try and she would try soon. When under the influence of the truth serum, from what Fleet Commander Lerian had stated; If she tried, it would kill her. He wanted to prevent that.
Rushing up the ramp of the shuttle, Vorik looked briefly at his new Pilot and Co-pilot. "Take me to the mother ship," he ordered. He didn't know yet if he could trust the two men, so he didn't tell them why he was going.
"Yes, sir," the two responded in unison before sitting in their seats.
Vorik buckled himself in and waited. The engines roared as they started their flight sequence. The shuttle door closed moments before the shuttled lifted into the air and out the opening in the dome. They soared through open space, heading to the mother ship. Vorik looked out the window, his thoughts on the information he was about to see. Like all the others, he wanted a way to save the girls but also stop Miles's mate from dying if she tried to save them herself.

Mikiel sat in one of the dark booths in the tavern with Verion. They had ordered strong beverages and a pizza. He enjoyed the pizza and was happy that he was moved to this particular side of the dome. They didn't have it at the other tavern on the other side of the dome, where he used to live.
In one corner of a booth, Verion watched a mated pair. The male was human; the female had white eyes.
"Do you know why the female has white eyes?" Verion whispered to Mikiel. He didn't want her to hear and be offended by his question.
Mikiel looked over at the couple. "The male is Miles. Guard Commander Drevick told me about him. His mate is Ver. Apparently, it means she can heal, but she never knew. She just found out."
Verion nodded, still looking at the girl. "I think it might be dangerous for her if she tries to heal someone and doesn't know how," he whispered. "Are there files to help her?"
"I doubt it. She's the only one I know of who has white eyes. I've never even heard of it," he whispered. "I'm told she's going to try to save five humans, but I don't know the details."
Verion sucked in a breath. "Wouldn't that kill her if she tries to heal without knowing what to do?"
"Guard Commander Drevick told me that in five days, she would try to save them if no cure is found. I think today is the end of day two. She's going to try at the end of day five," Mikiel whispered.
Verion looked confused. He didn't know of any humans that were so ill; the medics were looking for a cure. "I didn't know there were humans in danger like that. What happened to them? Why are they ill?" he asked Mikiel. This was all new information to him. He was curious.
Mikiel turned to Verion. "The human truth serum was tampered with. A toxin that binds to flesh when it is being extracted with the siphon was added to the serum. They can't siphon it, or it will kill them faster. Guard Commander Drevick told me that they were in stasis, waiting for a way to save them. They are trying to find a way to remove the toxin without it killing them. It is also the same toxin that killed Keirn. When they tried to remove it, the toxin bound to his tissue, killing him quickly."
Verion looked back at the mated pair. "I hope they find a cure before she tries. It sounds too dangerous for her to try to save them without knowing how to heal. Perhaps we should find something in the files to help her learn how to use her healing power."
Mikiel took a drink of his beverage. "Guard Commander Drevick told me that Fleet Commander Lerian is looking in the archives for something on the subject. They are looking for information to help keep her safe if the five days pass, and they still haven't found a way to take the toxin out of the humans. Drevick said that while the medics are trying to find a way to save the humans, Council Leader Vorik and Fleet Commander Lerian are looking for a way to save Ver."
"Ver? That's her name?" Verion asked. He had never heard of her before.
Mikiel nodded, then turned to look at the couple again. "She and her mate just found each other a couple of days ago. Everyone wants to help them. Miles was imprisoned for over a year. When the truth serum was used on him, it freed him. He found his mate the first night he was free when Dan Wilson brought him here. She served their strong beverage and pizza. They found each other then. He just didn't know it until later that night. They both deserved a long, happy life. She's been tormented for her eyes, and he was innocent in prison for far too long."
Verion took a bite out of his pizza and watched the coup. Thoughts swirled around in his mind. He knew what it felt like to be tormented for being different. He decided that he wanted to find a way to help them, too. He just needed to find out what to do and where to go to do it. After that, it would be easy.
Smiling to himself. He finished his pizza and strong beverage as he watched the couple. He had to find out what he could do to help. And he had to find out soon.
