Devil Equinox

Chapter 24: OLD ANGER NEW RESOLUTION

Demicus knew he was outnumbered and unleashed his power. Chain after chain came out from all directions in the building. I dodged the chains, moving my body in a jerking motion and at the time I used my sword to cut the chains. Dante on the other hand, well, he was finessing his way through the chaos. What a show-off.

The wave of chains was over and Dante sought the opportunity to get close the maniacally laughing demon, Demicus. He thought that he had already won by keeping us away and abusing his power. "You can't win Ravedos. Hahaha," he said.

Dante and I slowly trudged toward him as another wave of his chains came to pass. I reached him while he tried to wait to release another round and I punched him in the face, making him stagger to the side and I ultimately forced him to engage in hand-to-hand combat again.

We exchanged blows ferociously, then Dante stepped in to join in the fun with his sword. Demicus handled himself, I hate to admit, though I was trying to see what he would do. He swiftly switched his focus between Dante and me, after we attack him one after the other, than I switched tactics mid-fight. As soon as he would block my attack I would jab at him at the same time as Dante.

It was working and soon Dante caught on to my idea and we continued to overwhelm. Demicus had enough, he moved his hands away from his chest and moved his head upward. I knew what he was about to do and I grabbed Dante and jumped away from the demon. As soon as that had chains exploded from the ground, shrouding him in a deadly string of chains.

"What the fuck was that?" Dante asked.

"Stay back! This is what he wanted!" I said alarmed.

"Wai- What?!" Dante exclaimed.

"Dante, leave this to me! GO!" I commanded him.

Dante was confused but headed my instruction. He took his leave, and remained behind with the Demicus. He gradually fell into demonic instincts and losing his intellect, becoming more savage and further from the demon I remember.

--FLASH BACK—

"You know Ravedos you could have not intimidated those angels first of all and probably could've saved the other," young Demicus said.

"Are you saying that I should have done it while also fending for myself?" I asked him.

"Since you put it that way, you're right. You could've tried anyway."

"Hmm…"

"Is that all you have to say? Look, I didn't mean anything by that you know that. They were messengers after all, making sure both were alive while escorting them would've helped before killing them."

"If that were easy Demicus. Though I would have fancied their demise, they had to leave alive. It is my father's wish for any and all messengers sent down here by the Supreme Deity. We have no jurisdiction over that matter."

"You know you are bummer, right? Ruining a fun talk that we are having."

"I would not necessarily call it 'fun'."

He chuckled lightly and smiled. He stood up from the floor and patted me on my back. I turned my head then looked ahead again. "Remember that we have to attend the meeting since you're the leader of the Sinister Twelve again, right?" he said playfully. I sighed heavily and got up. 'I hate this place' I said under my breath.

"What was that?" he asked.

"Nothing," I said unconsciously while managing my tense facial expression.

"Hmm, I thought you said something." He stated doubtfully.

We left our meeting place to go to attend the meeting that the Demon Lord wanted us to attend.

Demicus' scream filled the entire building after I stabbed him through the abdomen. He grimaced his face and tried to take the pain. "You want to kill me? Go ahead, I will be back to try and kill you again." He said menacingly.

I stared him down in anger. Then out of nowhere I felt bad, holding back the tears, fighting myself killing my friend with my own hands. He noticed and try to manipulate the situation, "Ravedos, why are you doing this to me?" he asked I looked up at his face and twisted my sword in his abdomen. It made a squelching sound and he screamed even louder and longer.

"I want to enjoy this Demicus. Next, I will slowly crush your hearts one by one and listen to the melodic sound of your screams," I whispered in his remorseless.

He started breathing heavier and tried to escape me.

"Please Ravedos, have mercy on me," he pleaded.

I pulled my sword out of his abdomen and pushed on to the floor, where he laid on his back. I raised my sword by my face and drove through his chest, barely missing his heart. I left the sword in his chest got on my knee and put my hand in his chest on either side of the blade and opened his chest. He tried to fight back, I grabbed his arms making sure that the crack was audible enough to echo through the empty halls. He screamed even more but this was just the beginning.

I continued opening his chest pulling away his ribs far from another. In his chest were six hearts beating in a peculiar rhythm that was almost hypnotic. "Please, don't do this!" he persistently pleaded for his life. My mouth was quivering as I was fighting the urge of showing a smile. I was criminally enjoying this torturing session.

I grabbed one of his hearts, I then slowly squeezed it until I crushed it and it couldn't function no longer. I tilted my head slightly to the right, ripped out the heart and tossed it aside as if it were rubbish. I proceeded until there was one left.

Demicus pleaded weakly and I looked at his face once more. I went through a rollercoaster of emotions on the actions that I committed. I teared up by his side, regretful of what I was doing to him. "I am… so sorry," I struggled to say. My words were stuck in my throat refusing to be spoken out.

"Its fine Ravedos," he said weakly.

"No, it isn't Demicus. I lost control and I did this to you," I told him with an aching heart.

"I don't want… to come back… here. With… all the memories… and hatred. Before… I go promise me you will reset… my life. Make me forget everything… even you. This cycle… must end… before it begins."

I couldn't say anything at all. It was hard to swallow and to speak. I sat beside him and his body was slowly perishing. I acted on his last wish, and started saying incantation that slowed down his perishing body allowing me to do it myself. I spoke all the necessary words and afterward his body vanished to be reborn anew.

No memory of me, this city and invasion. Starting afresh with no hatred, no malice, and no knowledge of what is going on outside hell. He won't remember our friendship. I lost him twice now and this time it was by my hands. I should have stayed dead. But alas I am caused to rise from the dead.

"Captain, you there?" Marie asked over the earpiece.

"Yeah, I am. Where are you guys?"

"We got cornered by some demons, but we made out. Now we are in the subway. We have a few injured, Donny with minor injuries and Veronica. However Tarius is in critical condition and I can't do anything about it."

"You are in the subway? Alright, I am on my way. This demon was tougher than the others. Out."

"Copy that, Captain."

I stood up from the floor and winced at the pain. It was a pain that wasn't in one particular place. It spread around my body. I had to will through the pain until I was at the subway.

It was just the beginning of the pain I am going through.
