Chapter 121: 121: Only 37 to Go

"We only have 37 to go," Drake told his friends. "According to the system, we have taken out thirteen so far. If my calculations are correct, we only have 37 left."

With the warehouse emptied, they studied their surrounding with their glowing magical vision. They were trying to save the throne room for last. It was the most dangerous. Drake didn't want to send his familiars inside alone because there were too many gargoyles, and it was too far into the castle. He wouldn't put it past the gargoyles to extend the trap to the entire castle.

They were back in the main part of town, looking in the shops and public buildings. There were no signs of gargoyles.

Storm Town's residents continued to rush around as if in panic. Drake attempted to speak to a couple of them to get more information, but none of them would answer; they would just rush off, ignoring them.

Mike was getting increasingly frustrated. This was his town after all. They wouldn't even speak to him either. His body was crackling lightly with his lightning in his frustration. He couldn't stop it. It seemed to be connected to his emotions. He knew he needed to work on it, but now wasn't the time.

Chad remained quiet with his bow held up as they walked down the cobbled roads. He suddenly sucked in a breath. "I have an idea for the throne room." He turned to Drake. "Can you teleport the people inside to the city square? That would force the gargoyles inside to come back out of the castle."

Drake thought about it for a second. "I don't know. I can try."

Turning off the cobbled road they were on, they headed for the town square. It was directly in front of the castle doors.

Drake stood staring at the wide double doors. His friends flanked him on either side. He suddenly smiled. Tapping his staff on the ground, he placed a barrier over the entire castle, leaving only the double doors, making them the only way out.

His eyes suddenly burst with a bright green light as he focused on all the humans inside the castle. Drake focused his intention with the purpose of bringing the humans who were in the castle outside. Once his intention was clear, he slammed his staff into the cobbled ground.

A bright burst of light erupted in the town square. When it faded, the previously held captive people who had been in the castle found themselves in the town square.

Drake smiled as he and his friends stared at the wide double doors of the castle. With their magical vision, it was clear there were only gargoyles inside who were now making their way toward the entrance. It was exactly what Drake wanted.

"I need everyone to clear the area," Drake called. "We are about to battle, and I doubt you want to get hurt because of it."

As he spoke, Drake's gaze did not waver from the door.

Around them, the people in the square backed away and rushed out of the area. Some hid behind buildings, and others disappeared toward their homes. Several wanted to see what was going to happen, so they hid behind the large bushes and trees that scattered the park-like area at one side of the town square.

"I need one of you to keep an eye on our surroundings. Not all of them are in the castle. I don't want to be ambushed from behind," Drake instructed.

Renn and Ruby immediately turned toward their surroundings. Mike, seeing this, kept his gaze on the wide double doors of the castle.

Chad lifted his bow, ready to aim. The gargoyles were nearly at the door.

Drake stored his bow as he let his whip uncoil from his wrist. He filled it with glowing green energy as they waited for the gargoyles.

Drake suddenly put his whip back and held out his staff. "Stay behind me," he warned his friends. "I'm going to try what I did during the tunnel quest. "

Nodding, Mike and Chad stepped back.

The wide doors opened, and gargoyles poured out like water; their battle cries echoed through the town square. Drake calmly slammed his staff on the ground. A burst of green energy flooded the area in front of them, colliding with the gargoyles still exiting the castle.

Bursts of light particles exploded around them as the blast took out all but a few of the gargoyles.

{You have killed a gargoyle…}

{You have killed a gargoyle…}

{You have killed a gargoyle…}

The messages kept coming.

{You have killed a gargoyle 42/50}

Drake quickly stored his staff and released his whip. "We're at 42," he called, filling his whip with energy.

Chad immediately shot his arrows, one after the other, while Mike shot out a lightning blade.

{A member of your cohort has killed a gargoyle 43/50}

{A member of your cohort has killed a gargoyle 44/50}

{A member of your cohort has killed a gargoyle 45/50}

Drake slashed his whip. The energy whip lashed forward, slicing the remaining three in half.

{You have killed a gargoyle…}

{You have killed a gargoyle…}

{You have killed a gargoyle 48/50}

Light particles burst out as the gargoyles died from the energy whip.

Drake scanned the area, looking for the last two. "There should only be two remaining. One of them should be a shaman." He didn't see the other two.

Mike looked around the area, trying to find the last ones. "Did they get away?" he asked.

Hearing Mike's words, Drake took out his staff and slammed it into the ground. A dome of soft green light encompassed the entire town. He had formed a barrier around the Storm Town, trying to prevent the last two from escaping. After removing the barrier from the castle, they wandered the city streets trying to find the remaining two gargoyles.

Drake used his system to analyze the area to find the two gargoyles. He suddenly smiled. "Follow the red thread. The threads are our last two targets."
