A Bumpy Road to Power

Chapter 144: Returned to Square One

Dirk Carter's eyes widened suddenly.

He asked, "Are you saying Secretary Lewis made the call himself?"

Eli Dixon nodded and said, "Yes, he made the call himself."

Oh, dear me.

Dirk heard with his own ears that someone named Elder Nolan had someone in a black suit make a call. Could such a call actually reach the city leaders directly?

If that's truly the case, then this elder must be some big BOSS.

"Chief Ding, we found the person."

A policeman ran over and shouted.

Eli Dixon patted Dirk Carter on the shoulder and said, "Secretary Carter, I have to go get busy, we'll chat later when we have time."

"Sure, you go ahead."

Dirk Carter said.

Only to see two or three policemen in a group, carrying out the four drunks from before.

These people were almost in a state of unconsciousness, each with injuries all over, looking as if they were on the brink of death.

"Chief Ding, I'll go get the surveillance from the shop to see the incident process."

Another policeman said.

Eli Dixon directly tapped on his cap and angrily said, "What surveillance? What surveillance? Go delete the surveillance immediately; none of you are allowed to look at it, understand?"

"Understood."

That policeman replied somewhat aggrievedly.

Beating people and not even allowing the surveillance to be viewed — this Elder Nolan's identity made Dirk Carter even more curious.

The next morning.

As soon as Dirk Carter entered his office, he heard an explosive piece of news.

The head of the general office of the County Committee, Magnus Linden, was dismissed.

Without any reason.

He was dismissed directly.

And no one even knew who issued the order.

Such a situation was indeed the first time Dirk Carter had encountered.

As for Elaine Nolan, she was just like before, smiling and greeting people when she saw them, still overwhelmed with work. No one knew if Magnus Linden's dismissal was related to her.

During this period.

The County Committee compound appeared calm and peaceful.

But internally, everyone knew that after Dylan Tate's death, the compound had changed names.

After Donal Lewis briefly took control of the situation, he was beaten back to his original form by Sherman Summers.

At this point, he had already been sidelined.

In such a situation, Dirk Carter had no breakthrough measures. Although he had a notebook full of useful information, he also knew that he might already be under surveillance; once used again, he might truly be exposed.

This morning.

He personally witnessed Sherman Summers' secretary, Garnett Golding, calling Donal Lewis to have him come to the mayor's office.

It's important to know that although the County Committee Secretary and the Mayor are on the same level, the County Committee Secretary is technically the boss.

Even if there is something to discuss, it's the Mayor who takes the initiative to go to the County Committee Secretary's office.

How could there be a reason to call the County Committee Secretary to come over?

Donal Lewis didn't go.

As a result, a secretary's office meeting did not include the County Committee Secretary.

Such an incident is something explosive in any government unit.

Sherman Summers didn't regard Donal Lewis at all, and clearly carried an intention of humiliation.

"Leader, it's my fault; I didn't help you."

Dirk Carter spoke with some guilt while looking at the furious Donal Lewis on the sofa.

Donal Lewis waved his hand and said, "You've done enough. If it weren't for you, I might not have been able to keep this County Committee Secretary position, I might have been under double regulation already."

"Leader, don't be disheartened; there must be a way out. I'll go back and think about it carefully."

Dirk Carter consoled.

Donal Lewis sighed deeply.

He said, "It's no use; Sherman Summers has completed arrangements within the County Committee Standing Committee. Now, up and down, almost everyone has been replaced by his people. We want to break out of this situation — it's harder than ascending to heaven."

"Then I'll go find Caleb Ford, President Ford; he still has connections in the city. I believe he might be able to help us."

Dirk Carter said.

Donal Lewis shook his head and said, "First, he's just a businessman; let's not involve him in our political affairs. Second, his identity is special. If I truly use his help, Sherman Summers will just seize the opportunity to accuse me, and it will be impossible for me to turn over. Let's just maintain the current pace as long as he doesn't press step by step, while we wait and seize opportunities."

Well, it's all they could do.

But how could Sherman Summers not press step by step?

Lately, he was setting the groundwork; once it was finished, he would surely turn his focus on attacking.

This morning's Secretary office was just a test.

In his view, Donal Lewis was already only the nominal boss.

Donal Lewis rubbed his face vigorously.

He looked at his watch, stood up, and said, "Alright, it's closing time, Dirk, are you free this evening?"

"Yes, what's up?"

Dirk Carter asked.

"Driver Little Liu is on leave; will you drive me home and stay for dinner?"

"Dinner's not necessary, I'll just drop you home."

Dirk Carter went to the drivers' class to get the keys.

He drove out the County Committee Secretary's special car.

Donal Lewis's home was at Tongxing New Village, one of the oldest neighborhoods in Stillwater County.

After dropping Donal Lewis off, Donal insisted on bringing Dirk Carter upstairs. Unable to refuse, he followed.

He opened the door.

A two-bedroom apartment, about 70 square meters, greeted him, with relatively old-fashioned decorations and outdated furniture.

"The house is quite shabby. Just make do."

Donal Lewis tossed a pair of slippers to Dirk Carter.

Having just put on his shoes.

A bedroom door opened.

Eleanor Lewis, wearing a cotton nightgown, walked out and was momentarily stunned upon seeing Dirk Carter.

"Xiao Yi, I brought Dirk home for dinner, so you keep him company for a while, I'll be cooking."

Donal Lewis tied his apron, took some vegetables from the fridge, and went into the kitchen.

Dirk Carter quickly said, "Leader, let me lend you a hand."

Donal Lewis waved his hand and said, "Our kitchen is small, don't mess things up. You young people go have fun; dinner will be ready in just over an hour."

Indeed.

The kitchen in Donal Lewis's home was quite small.

Once he was inside, there was basically no room.

"Where's your mother?"

Dirk Carter whispered to Eleanor Lewis.

Eleanor Lewis pointed at the wall with her finger, and only then did Dirk Carter see a memorial photo hanging there, the photo showing a woman looking young and beautiful.

"Sorry, I didn't know about this."

Dirk Carter regretted asking that.

Eleanor Lewis smiled and said, "It's alright, my mom passed away when she gave birth to me; it's been many years, and I never saw her, so I've had no feeling about it for a long time."

Well.

In this light, Eleanor Lewis was a pitiable person too.

The two of them sat on a narrow sofa.

Thinking of the madness in the disco not long ago.

Dirk Carter felt a bit awkward.

Not knowing what to say for a while.

"I haven't seen you at the County Committee compound recently?"

After a long time, Dirk Carter finally found a topic.

Eleanor Lewis chuckled, "Hehe, I have my own things to do, can't accompany you to a disco every day."

The voice was neither too loud nor too soft.

Dirk Carter was startled.

Fortunately, the kitchen exhaust fan was on.

Otherwise, Donal Lewis would have certainly heard.

Seeing Dirk Carter's cautious look, Eleanor Lewis covered her mouth with a smile, grabbed his hand, and shouted toward the kitchen, "Dad, I'm taking Dirk to my room for some chess!"

"Okay, you go ahead, I'll call you when dinner's ready."

Donal Lewis replied, not even turning his head.

Dirk Carter had no choice.

He was dragged into her room by Eleanor Lewis.

With a click.

As soon as they crossed the threshold.

Eleanor Lewis shut the door.

Her room was warmly decorated, though not large, it was very cozy.

The only thing Dirk Carter found unusual was her bed, not too large, was filled with dolls of all kinds covering more than half of the space, numbering at least a hundred.

Suddenly.

Eleanor Lewis wrapped her arms around Dirk Carter's neck and said, "Kiss me!"

Now?

Are you crazy?

Donal Lewis is right outside.

Dirk Carter was about to refuse.

Eleanor Lewis pouted and said, "If you don't kiss me, I'll tell my dad that you bullied me and see if he will spare you."

Who threatens people like this?

Dirk Carter had no choice.

He could only bring his lips to hers.

When their lips touched, this time, Eleanor Lewis appeared to navigate smoothly, immediately slipping her little tongue inside, exploring his mouth…
