A Bumpy Road to Power

Chapter 16: You'll Regret This

He swung a fist, landing it hard on Dirk Carter's head.

The punch was so strong that if Dirk hadn't been fastened to the interrogation chair, he might have been knocked flying.

"You think I won't hit you? What a joke! Dirk Carter, you think you're still a section chief? Let me tell you, after today, you're nothing!"

He thought Dirk would yield after seeing his toughness.

Unexpectedly, Dirk just spat in response.

With a cold voice, he asked, "So, police hitting people feels so weak, like you haven't eaten?"

Still being stubborn?

Eldric Dutton's anger boiled over.

He turned around, fetched an electric baton, and once he turned it on, sparks flew everywhere.

"There's still time to apologize now,"

Eldric Dutton said.

Faced with Dirk's disdain,

he finally made his move.

The first jab of the electric baton hit Dirk's arm.

A strong electric current surged through his body, and for a moment, Dirk nearly fainted.

Even so,

he kept swearing.

Eldric Dutton couldn't be bothered with anything else.

He placed the electric baton on Dirk's body twice more.

After those two shocks, Dirk couldn't even muster the strength to speak, and his arm bore a dark, frightening burn wound.

"Do you submit?"

Eldric Dutton asked through gritted teeth.

Dirk swayed slightly as he raised his head.

His eyes were already somewhat unfocused.

Then he spat again, this time, a blood-laced spittle landed on Eldric Dutton's uniform.

"You clueless bastard, think I won't beat you to death—"

Just as he swung the baton again,

with a crash,

the door to the interrogation room opened from the outside.

A woman with an anxious expression appeared at the door.

It was Delilah Goodman, the Health Bureau Director.

"Stop!"

Delilah Goodman shouted fiercely.

She rushed right up to Eldric Dutton.

"Who are you? Do you know where this is?"

Eldric Dutton frowned, about to explode, when he noticed that Booker Kane, the police station chief, had also come out behind her.

"Chief Kane, you have to give me an explanation for this, or I'll go to the disciplinary committee to report you for coerced confessions,"

Delilah Goodman said, her eyes filled with righteous anger as she glanced at the barely conscious Dirk.

Booker Kane also got anxious upon hearing this.

He glared at Eldric Dutton.

And asked, "What's going on?"

Eldric Dutton, unhurried, said, "I took people to Elysian Springs Spa for a routine check, found this guy soliciting, and after bringing him back, he still refused to admit it..."

"Soliciting? Impossible!"

Before he finished speaking,

Delilah Goodman sternly refuted.

Eldric Dutton sneered and said, "Our station wouldn't wrong an innocent person."

Delilah Goodman retorted angrily, "Regardless of what he did, he's still with our Health Bureau, you release him immediately, I need to take him to the hospital for an examination."

"Director Goodman, according to the regulations..."

Booker Kane said hesitantly.

Delilah asked, "According to regulations? Do the regulations allow you to beat people? What? Do you think our Health Bureau is easy to push around? Chief Kane, should we take this somewhere else to settle?"

After all, she was the Director of the Health Bureau.

And he was just a street police station chief.

There was still a half-level rank difference between them.

He hesitated, just about to agree, when suddenly, a man's voice at the door said, "Comrade Delilah Goodman, is this appropriate?"

This voice caught everyone's attention.

They turned to look.

Shane Vincent was already standing at the door with his hands behind his back.

Seeing him,

Eldric Dutton's face lit up with joy.

He went up and pretended to report the whole story.

After listening, Shane Vincent nodded and said, "As a public servant, breaking the law knowingly, with clear evidence, still intentionally denying it, is an added crime. The police have their ways of handling a case, and others shouldn't interfere."

As a county leader,

this statement was essentially a ruling.

It was also a warning to Delilah Goodman.

Looking at Dirk, who was almost exhausted, Delilah was about to speak when Shane Vincent quickly said, "Director Goodman, I advise you to think carefully, don't let a subordinate's illegal acts affect yourself. It's not easy to get to your position now."

His tone grew heavier.

There was an implicit threat.

Shane Vincent's presence made this matter irreversible.

With Deputy County Head Vincent backing him,

Eldric Dutton felt even more confident.

He said to Delilah Goodman, "Director Goodman, I'm sorry, this is the police case handling area, unauthorized personnel must leave, you can go now."

Feeling helpless.

Though she desperately wanted to save Dirk,

this time, it seemed beyond her ability to help.

In front of everyone,

Eldric Dutton rolled up his sleeves.

He said, "Dirk Carter, as you can see, no one can save you. If you don't want to suffer, I suggest you confess."

Slowly, Dirk raised his head.

With a sharp gaze, he looked at Eldric Dutton.

He spoke deliberately, "This is coerced confession, you will regret this."

"Oh really? I'm curious to see how a soliciting offender will make me regret it?"

Eldric Dutton laughed out loud.

At this moment,

there was a sudden sound of rapid footsteps in the corridor.

Soon enough,

Maeve Winters, wearing a police uniform, appeared sternly in front of everyone with several officers.

She walked straight into the interrogation room.

With a glance at Dirk, she turned to the people behind her and said, "Unlock him."

The accompanying officers were about to unlock the handcuffs.

Eldric Dutton stopped her and asked, "Which unit are you from?"

"Maeve Winters, leader of the 623 Special Task Force."

"You cannot take people from our station without proper procedure, what about the documents?"

"Documents? Is this what you're asking for?"

Maeve pulled a piece of paper from her pocket and slapped it in front of Eldric Dutton.

When Eldric Dutton opened the paper and saw, his face turned green immediately.

"This is a newly issued report from the County Public Security Inspection Department. The components in the condom you submitted are soy milk, and also, Catherine Sawyer's medical report showed she hadn't had any sexual relations with anyone within the past 48 hours. Deputy Chief Dutton, how do you explain this?"

Maeve asked.

It was like a thunderclap out of a clear blue sky.

Everyone gathered in and outside the interrogation room was completely stunned.

Especially Eldric Dutton, it was clear his forehead had started to bead with sweat, and his hand holding the examination report was slightly trembling.

Despite constantly telling himself it's impossible,

the report in front of him was real.

Also, it couldn't be fake.

In other words, now it was his turn to be done for.

Framing, coerced confession, any of these would be enough to strip him of his uniform.

"Zhao..."

He suddenly remembered Shane Vincent.

This was now his only lifeline.

But when he looked towards the door, Shane Vincent's face had already turned extremely dark.

"Nonsense, this is simply nonsense, how does your station handle cases? You dare arrest people without evidence? Booker Kane, your station must provide an explanation, otherwise, I won't let it go."

Finishing this,

he walked in.

Came in front of Dirk Carter,

and earnestly said, "Comrade Dirk Carter, rest assured, since I came across this incident, I'll see that you get justice. The county government's stance on perpetrators is clear, they must be severely punished."

This statement made Eldric Dutton's hands and feet tremble.

It was all over, utterly over this time.

He was going to be the scapegoat, a sacrificial lamb.

While his heart was lamenting,

Dirk forced a smile and said, "Deputy County Head Vincent, Chief Dutton as a police officer was just enforcing the law impartially. He must have been misled by someone. The person who made the false report to Chief Dutton is the truly detestable one, isn't it?"
