A Bumpy Road to Power

Chapter 168: Curiosity Killed the Cat

The reason why Dirk Carter didn't want to leave Stillwater County is because of Dylan Tate.

In officialdom, nobody doesn't wish to climb the ranks.

Dirk Carter is no exception.

Even though Sherman Summers has fallen, the truth about Dylan Tate's suicide is emerging.

But Donal Lewis knows that there are still doubts in his heart.

He remains determined to clear up this matter.

The following sentence, Dirk Carter wouldn't say if he agreed, but ultimately, he was forced to speak it out loud.

Dirk Carter was taken aback.

He took a deep breath and said, "I'll go to Kenton County."

Donal Lewis nodded and said, "Alright, I'll handle this matter during this period."

"Leader, may I recommend a secretary to you?"

Dirk Carter asked.

Donal Lewis was a bit surprised and asked, "Oh? Do you have a suitable candidate?"

"My previous secretary in Sunglow Town, named Zach Griffin, is young, but he's quite reliable in his work. With your guidance, he should grow swiftly."

"Alright, since you recommend him, I trust you completely. Just hand over your current tasks to him. I'll try to finalize your transfer as soon as possible."

"Okay, then it's up to you, Leader," Dirk Carter said.

All that needed to be said was said.

Donal Lewis stretched lazily.

Then he said, "Let's go, Eleanor, we're going home."

During the discussion of the transfer, Eleanor Lewis hardly spoke a word.

But when she stood up to leave, Dirk Carter noticed the reluctance in her eyes.

He patted Eleanor on the arm and said, "Don't worry, I'll come back to visit the leader and you when I have time. I promise, and I'll even play chess with you then."

This made Eleanor Lewis smile.

She said, "That's what you said. When the time comes, we'll play for a whole day and night, you can't back out."

"Alright, I'll play with you for a whole day and night," Dirk Carter replied.

Donal Lewis's work efficiency was quite fast.

In just five days,

The transfer order from the Kenton County Committee had reached Stillwater County.

The news of Dirk Carter's transfer spread throughout the County Committee compound in an instant.

Throughout the morning,

Dirk Carter received several phone calls.

Calls came from Zoey Moss, Sierra Vincent, and even Lauren Radford.

They were all inquiring about his transfer.

It's just a change of working place, not a life or death separation, so Dirk Carter felt no need for unnecessary emotional farewells.

The day after receiving the transfer order,

Dirk Carter formally bid farewell to Donal Lewis and set out alone for his duties in Kenton County.

The distance between the two places is less than two hundred kilometers.

Originally, Dirk Carter planned to take the bus.

But just as he reached the entrance of the residential area,

he saw a black Mercedes.

It was Caleb Ford's car.

Caleb Ford was leaning against the car, quietly smoking a cigarette, glaring at Dirk Carter with displeasure.

"You're leaving, why didn't you tell me earlier?"

Caleb Ford asked somewhat unhappily.

Dirk Carter smiled and said, "I'm not going to the battlefield to never return, what's there to say?"

Caleb Ford nodded and said, "Alright, you're right, you're not going never to return. But taking the bus is tiring, I'll have Ewan and Rose drive you, there's someone to chat with on the way, how nice."

Dirk Carter took a closer look.

Indeed, it was Ewan Forrest in the driver's seat and Rose Forrest in the passenger seat, both waving at him.

"Alright, since there's no way to decline, I'll accept."

Dirk Carter jokingly said.

Just as he opened the back door,

Caleb Ford grabbed him by the shoulder and sternly asked, "Don't you have any questions for me?"

"I do."

Dirk Carter nodded and said.

Caleb Ford was taken aback and asked, "Then why don't you ask?"

"If I ask you, and you tell me the truth, it would be uncomfortable for you. But if you don't tell me the truth, it would be uncomfortable for me. Since someone's bound to get hurt, why should I ask?"

"Aren't you curious?"

"Of course, I'm curious, very curious. But sometimes, curiosity killed the cat."

Dirk Carter smiled slightly.

Then got into the car.

He patted Ewan Forrest on the shoulder and said, "Let's set off."

Watching the car slowly leave,

Caleb Ford stood there, not knowing why a wave of sadness welled up in his heart.

"You kid, making it so sentimental, you've moved even me."

Caleb Ford murmured to himself, not turning around to leave until the car disappeared around the corner.

In the car, Dirk Carter felt the same.

Back in Sunglow Town, he had noticed that Caleb Ford had sent the two sisters to get close to him to find that notebook.

Someone must have been orchestrating this.

But from beginning to end, Dirk Carter never exposed the situation.

He was indeed curious about the person behind Caleb Ford, but later gradually discovered that the two sisters no longer did anything "out of line," which indicated that Caleb Ford had already given up on his "search."

In that case,

there's no need to delve deeper into it. Seeing through but not speaking out, they continued to be friends.

Just as he said earlier.

If this truth is bound to hurt someone, he'd rather not have it.

After all, he always has his means of getting closer to the truth.

The first time the three of them were in the car, it was to send Dirk Carter to his appointment in Sunglow Town, busy chatting all the way.

But this time, as they took Dirk Carter to Kenton County,

the three of them hardly spoke.

It seemed as though each of them harbored secrets.

Rose Forrest was afraid her sister would find out that she and Dirk Carter had crossed the "line."

Ewan Forrest was also afraid her affair with Dirk Carter would be discovered by her sister, Rose Forrest.

Kenton County, with a population of around fifty thousand, is located in the northeastern part of Serenity State. It was once the political, economic, and cultural center of the East Serenity Region. Because it's located along the coast, the whole area presents a peninsula-like shape.

Moreover, Kenton County ranks first in Serenity State in terms of coastline length, making it a typical seaside small town.

Dirk Carter was not unfamiliar with Kenton County.

When he was in college, a friend in his dorm was from Kenton County.

Additionally, his first girlfriend in college was also from Kenton County; it was for this reason that he accompanied his ex-girlfriend to visit Kenton County for a few days, leaving a good impression of this city.

Near noon,

Dirk Carter arrived at the Kenton County Committee compound.

The compound was built against a hill; although the buildings were a bit old, the scenery was pleasant.

The compound had four large banyan trees that provided ample shade, making it look like a park.

Upon learning of Dirk Carter's appointment,

Zach Griffin from the Kenton County organizational department personally came out to greet him.

He accompanied Dirk Carter to complete the organizational formalities.

Technically, the organizational department could have arranged a car for Dirk Carter's appointment today, but procedurally, the head of a functional department must have a conversation with the county head before taking office.

Coincidentally, today Kenton County's head, Simon Lewis, was at a meeting in the city.

Zach Griffin suggested that Dirk Carter finds a place to stay and wait until the conversation with the county head is completed tomorrow morning, after which he would personally escort him to his new post.

"Comrade Dirk Carter, let me call the county guest house to reserve a room for you."

Zach Griffin said politely.

Dirk Carter quickly responded, "Leader, I appreciate your kindness, but I've heard that our county's snacks are famous. I want to take the afternoon to walk around and check them out. I won't bother the guest house."

Zach Griffin hesitated for a moment.

And said, "Alright, since Comrade Dirk Carter has this interest, I won't stop you. Tomorrow morning, just head to the county government to report to the county head Simon Lewis and then come to the office to find me."

"Thank you so much, Minister Zach."

"No need to be so polite; I've been friends with Secretary Lewis for many years; helping a bit with this is only right."

Zach Griffin said.

Leaving the County Committee compound.

Dirk Carter's stomach was already growling in protest.

After getting in the car, Dirk Carter said to Ewan Forrest, "Let's go, drive forward, and I'll take you guys for some good food."
