A Bumpy Road to Power

Chapter 18: The Evil Clutches

The bathroom door had just closed.

There was a creaking sound.

The ward door was pushed open once more.

A young nurse's voice called out, "It's time for the patient to take their medicine."

Then, the young nurse noticed the empty bed, mumbled something, and closed the door again as she left.

The three people in the restroom.

Finally breathed a sigh of relief.

Maeve Winters released Delilah Goodman's mouth.

Such a scene caused Delilah Goodman to blush as well.

"Um... you guys... you continue, I'll just..."

Feeling flustered, Delilah Goodman hurriedly opened the bathroom door and rushed out in a panic.

"See, you missed a great opportunity just now by not taking the initiative?"

Maeve Winters playfully hit Dirk Carter and said.

"What opportunity?"

"Of course, the chance to kill two birds with one stone."

Maeve Winters laughed.

Dirk Carter dared not engage in this banter, who knew what this little imp Maeve had in mind?

"Then shall we..."

"Of course, continue! Anyway, we've already been seen, what's there to be afraid of?"

After saying that.

Maeve Winters directly pushed open the bathroom door and pointed to the hospital bed, saying, "Didn't you say we should find a bed next time? Look, there's one right here."

"Then let's go for it!"

Dirk Carter gave Maeve Winters a princess carry, tossed her onto the bed, and pounced like a wild beast...

Delilah Goodman, who had run out of the ward.

Didn't stop until she reached the window at the end of the corridor.

The scene of Dirk and Maeve entangled together kept replaying in her mind.

Logically, witnessing such a scene should be quite awkward.

But for some reason, Delilah suddenly realized that a tiny seed of desire had sprouted deep within her heart.

"Oh dear, what am I thinking?"

She shook her head vigorously, trying to clear her mind.

But such primal desires are not easily dismissed.

While Dirk Carter and Maeve Winters were in the throes of passion.

In the restroom of the presidential suite of The Argent Grand Hotel.

Lauren Radford was gazing at her bruised body in the mirror.

Her fair skin was covered with scratch marks from fingernails, and in some parts, there were visible bruises, clearly the result of fingers digging in.

The sound of Shane Vincent's ear-piercing snores filled the room.

Thinking back on the earlier events.

Tears of humiliation streamed down Lauren's face.

Lauren Radford, 32 years old and unmarried.

Though not an extraordinarily beautiful woman, she was above average.

Especially her proud assets, which were always the subject of envy.

One would think such a woman wouldn't lack admirers and wouldn't have trouble finding a decent man.

But as the years passed, she found herself alone.

It wasn't that Lauren didn't want to marry.

She simply couldn't marry.

At the age of 26.

She was an ordinary bailiff at the county prosecutor's office.

It was also the year.

Deputy County Mayor Shane Vincent visited the prosecutor's office for an inspection, and he took a liking to her at first sight.

Since then, under Shane Vincent's coercion and temptation, she first ended up in his bed and couldn't stop thereafter.

On the surface, she was a cadre.

In reality, she was merely Shane Vincent's kept outlet for release.

She wasn't allowed to date or marry and had to be at his beck and call. At times, she even had to deal with some dirty business for him, such as the affair involving Hilliard Hall, an act Dirk Carter thought Lauren did of her own volition, but she was forced by Shane Vincent.

Of course, she received appropriate returns.

In six years.

She rose from an ordinary bailiff to the Deputy Director of the Anti-Corruption Bureau of the County Prosecutor's Office.

All of it was exchanged at the cost of her dignity and youth.

Today, Shane Vincent, merely because of Dirk Carter's unresolved matter, took out his frustration upon her, unleashing all his grievances on her.

"I can't continue like this."

Lightly traced the wounds with her fingers.

Lauren Radford spoke to herself.

But what could she do?

With her abilities, she couldn't escape Shane Vincent's clutches.

At that moment, she thought of someone—Dirk Carter.

That quirky fellow surely had a way to help her.

...

On Monday at noon.

Dirk Carter had just finished his discharge procedures at the hospital.

When he received a call from Fordham Wright.

Fordham Wright excitedly told Dirk Carter over the phone that the Health Bureau's party committee had decided, due to planting and framing, to dismiss Victor Ford from his public post.

Furthermore, the Disciplinary and Supervisory Committee had already started investigating the matter.

Victor Ford had been taken away.

This time, it seemed unlikely he would get out.

You reap what you sow.

Victor Ford, naively thinking that having Shane Vincent's backing would lead to a bright future.

Unbeknownst to him, someone of his level was nothing more than a pawn discarded once used by the big shots.

Ending up like this, he had no one else to blame.

Victor Ford was completely out.

Which not only resolved an internal threat for Dirk Carter but also served as a warning to Shane Vincent.

He knew Shane Vincent wouldn't easily let things go.

However, this outcome would at least buy him some more time.

Taking a taxi back to the rental apartment.

Upon opening the door.

He noticed something unusual.

What was previously a cluttered room was now clean and tidy.

From the kitchen came the enticing aroma of food, making one's mouth water.

Through the glass door, he could vaguely make out a woman's silhouette busy inside.

"Catherine?"

Dirk Carter softly called.

A beautiful face peeked out of the kitchen; it was Catherine Sawyer.

"Boss, you're back. The food will be ready soon, just wait a moment."

Dirk Carter smacked his forehead.

He nearly forgot.

By having Catherine Sawyer cooperate in that act, it meant she could no longer work at Elysian Springs Spa.

With nowhere else to go.

Dirk Carter gave her the address and key to the apartment, allowing her to stay temporarily.

He spent the whole night tangled up with Maeve and completely forgot about this.

Changing into slippers as he entered.

Catherine Sawyer served up three dishes and a soup, all looking delicious.

After a busy night, he was indeed famished.

Without further ado, two bowls of rice quickly went down.

"Is it good?"

Catherine Sawyer asked.

"It's been ages since I had such delicious food."

Dirk Carter let out a satisfied burp.

Catherine Sawyer smiled slightly, pointing to the tea on the coffee table by the sofa, and said, "I prepared some tea for you. Take a break while I go change."

With that.

She turned and entered the spare bedroom.

Sipping tea contentedly, Dirk Carter sighed inwardly at how nice it felt to be taken care of.

At this moment.

The spare bedroom door opened.

Catherine Sawyer walked out gracefully.

Just after taking a sip of tea, Dirk Carter caught sight of Catherine's attire and promptly spurted out the tea.

"How do I look?"

Outfitted anew, Catherine Sawyer twirled before Dirk Carter.

Dirk Carter's eyes were wide open.

Swallowing hard, he said, "Gorgeous, absolutely gorgeous..."
