A Bumpy Road to Power

Chapter 194: Clues

Eliza Henderson's home is a one-bedroom single apartment.

Although it's not large, it's decorated very warmly.

Despite Eliza's androgynous appearance, her house is filled with all kinds of fluffy toys.

Of course, compared to Eleanor Lewis's vast collection of dolls, it's still a world of difference.

"Please sit for a while, I'll go change clothes."

After entering.

Eliza asked Dirk Carter to wait for a while on the sofa.

Then she handed him a drink and went into the bedroom.

About five minutes later, Eliza came out, having changed into a casual tracksuit.

Her messy hair was also tidied up a bit.

This surprised Dirk Carter.

Home already, isn't it time to change into pajamas?

Of course, this was a question he had in mind, but it seemed impolite to ask.

"Officer Henderson, I'm really sorry, if I hadn't asked you to dinner today, this wouldn't have happened."

Dirk Carter said.

Eliza Henderson smiled slightly and said, "This has nothing to do with you. I'm a police officer; when I see something like this, I'm definitely going to intervene. Let's not talk about it for now, are you hungry?"

"I'm not hungry."

Dirk Carter replied.

Eliza nodded and said, "I'm not hungry either, so let's get down to business first. You're called Dirk Carter, right?"

"Yes, I'm Dirk Carter."

"And your job is..."

"I'm the newly appointed Director of the Education Bureau."

As he said this, Eliza was drinking water.

Upon hearing Dirk Carter's introduction, Eliza choked on her water and couldn't stop coughing.

Dirk Carter hastily offered her a tissue and asked, "Are you okay?"

After Eliza stopped coughing, she glanced at Dirk Carter in disbelief and asked, "How old are you to be Director of the Education Bureau already?"

"27."

"A 27-year-old Director of the Education Bureau, it seems your family background is quite substantial."

As she said this, for some reason, there was a hint of disappointment in Eliza's eyes.

She paused and said, "Director Carter, go ahead, why are you looking for me?"

Dirk Carter pondered for a moment and asked, "Officer Henderson, do you know about the incident of a woman's mysterious fall at the House Grand Hotel?"

"Yes, that's a case we are handling."

That was good news.

Dirk Carter immediately became excited and asked, "Are there any suspicions surrounding this mysterious fall case?"

"Suspicions?"

Eliza was momentarily stunned.

Dirk Carter nodded and said, "Let me first tell you what I know about the background, then you can make an assessment."

Having said this.

Dirk Carter then recounted in detail what he had heard from Christina Ramey.

As he spoke,

Eliza's brow furrowed.

By the time Dirk Carter finished speaking.

Eliza let out a long sigh and said, "Director Carter, I think you'd better not get involved with this case."

"Why?"

"There's no reason, really. Although we're in charge of the case and I was at the scene, the criminal investigation unit got involved shortly after we arrived. Apparently, there were higher-ups who made inquiries, and now the case is already closed."

Eliza said.

From the tone of Eliza's voice.

Dirk Carter deduced that Eliza actually knew something but just didn't dare to speak.

He pondered for a moment and said, "Officer Henderson, I know you're concerned for me, but I have to get to the bottom of this matter. If it really was someone in my education system abusing their power leading to this, as Director, I can't shirk responsibility. Uncovering the truth is also the only way to ensure justice for ordinary people, isn't it?"

Dirk Carter's eyes were sincere.

Passionate.

Eliza noticed.

She slowly said, "The waters of Kenton County's education system run deep. I've been here longer than you, and I know more than you do. If you're set on antagonizing these people, as a new director, you're going to suffer."

"I'm not afraid."

Dirk Carter said firmly.

"What if you're relieved from your directorial position?"

"I'm not afraid of that either."

Still with a resolute tone and determined eyes.

Eliza let out a long sigh.

Said, "Fine, I'll give you a hint, to solve this case, first you need to deal with a certain person."

"Declan Newhart."

"Who's Declan Newhart?"

Dirk Carter asked.

Eliza said, "In Kenton County, there's a well-known spa called The Tonight Spa & Resort. Its owner is Declan Newhart."

Dirk Carter scratched his head and asked, "What does this spa have to do with the mysterious fall case?"

Eliza said, "This Declan Newhart is considered the only crime boss in Kenton County. Although he's quite famous, no department dares to touch him. As far as I know, he started by specializing in solving tricky problems for people. When leaders encounter problems, they generally seek Newhart to settle things. This time, the suspect who confessed in the Myra Walsh fall case used to work at The Tonight Club."

"Are you saying that Declan Newhart paid someone to take the blame?"

Dirk Carter asked.

Eliza said, "I dare not make such claims, but as long as you get Declan Newhart on board, there will be clues for this case. Otherwise, you have no other options. Even if I help you, by myself I can't initiate an investigation into this case since the orders from above have already been given, and no one dares to cooperate with us."

"I understand, I'll head to The Tonight Club now."

Dirk Carter nodded.

Just as he stood up,

Eliza grabbed him and exclaimed, "Are you crazy?"

"Didn't you say we need to find Declan Newhart to solve the problem?"

"Yes, I said finding Declan Newhart would be useful, but why would he want to see you? Why would he want to help you? Who is Declan Newhart? The only crime lord in Kenton County, he doesn't even give the police face. Do you think, based on your status as Director of the Education Bureau, he'd give you any face?"

Dirk Carter asked, "What time does The Tonight Club close?"

"It's open all night, why?"

"Oh, that's good, thank you for telling me all this."

With that, he pushed the door and left.

Eliza was momentarily stunned.

She thought mentioning Declan Newhart's name would deter Dirk Carter, leveraging his name to curb Dirk's impulsiveness. Unexpectedly, he didn't take it to heart at all.

After a while,

Feeling uneasy.

Eliza called Maeve Winters.

As soon as the other side picked up, Eliza asked somewhat exasperatedly, "Maeve, is your friend named Dirk Carter a fool?"

"What happened?"

Maeve asked.

Eliza detailed the entire incident.

On the other end, Maeve burst out laughing.

"Why are you laughing?"

Eliza asked.

Maeve stifled her laughter and said, "He's not just not a fool, he's actually quite smart, and never goes into a fight unprepared. If he's targeting this Declan Newhart, then it's Newhart who's in trouble."

"Are you kidding? He's just arrived; does he have that much capability?"

Eliza asked.

Maeve laughed and said, "I don't know how capable he is, but I suggest you spend less time with him."

"Why?"

"Because the more time you spend with him, you'll find yourself irresistibly falling in love with him."

"How is that possible? Is it that unbelievable?"

Eliza asked incredulously.

Maeve secretly laughed and said, "Alright then, just wait and see whether he's just stirring up trouble or if Declan Newhart gets knocked down. I bet you, come daylight, Declan won't be as cocky."

"A bet is a bet, who's afraid? What's the wager?"

Maeve thought for a moment.

Said, "Since it's about Dirk Carter, let's bet on him. If you win, I'll spend a night with Dirk. If I win, you have to kiss Dirk for five minutes, and he has to initiate it. How about that?"

"Raising the stakes this high? Maybe you've already slept with Dirk?"

"Never mind that, just answer whether you dare or not..."

"If you dare, why shouldn't I dare? It's settled."

Eliza said defiantly.
