A Bumpy Road to Power

Chapter 213: Always Leave Yourself a Way Out

Vincent Eames didn't say a word, he directly activated the electric baton.

He jabbed it towards Dirk Carter's thigh.

The powerful electric current quickly coursed through Dirk Carter's entire body. Being restrained on the hospital bed, he couldn't even struggle, his whole body began to tremble violently.

Even so, Dirk Carter gritted his teeth and didn't utter a sound.

This scene also frightened Rosalind Sullivan.

She only intended to give Dirk Carter a hard time, never thinking that Vincent Eames would take it so seriously.

She was worried when noticing the pain on Dirk Carter's face.

She wanted to step forward to persuade, but was stopped by another police officer: "Dr. Sullivan, please do not interfere, this is our investigation procedure."

Rosalind Sullivan said apologetically: "But he hasn't fully recovered, if you do this..."

Before she could finish her sentence.

Vincent Eames jabbed the baton at him again.

Just like last time, Dirk Carter's body shuddered, even the wrists handcuffed were chafed and bleeding.

"Wow, didn't expect that, Director Carter does have some grit, getting shocked like this and still not making a peep. No worries, our criminal police squad has plenty of tricks."

After saying that.

He returned the electric baton.

And took a bottle of pepper spray.

Rosalind Sullivan was already extremely anxious.

Even though Dirk Carter was despicable, she actually intended to retaliate.

But she never imagined such "torture."

She hurriedly shouted: "Don't go too far, the patient hasn't fully recovered. If you continue, it might be fatal."

Vincent Eames was already annoyed.

He couldn't care less whether it would be fatal or not.

Raising the pepper spray, he was about to spray it on Dirk Carter's face, when suddenly, a loud voice from the doorway shouted, "Stop!"

The voice was loud and imposing.

Vincent Eames turned his head to see Executive Director Cecil Ford walking in with a gloomy face.

"Director Ford, why have you come so late?"

Vincent Eames asked in surprise.

Cecil Ford glanced at him and said coldly, "I wouldn't have come if I hadn't, your criminal squad is likely to cause a fatal incident."

"How could that be, we're conducting an investigation according to the law. This Dirk Carter is a scoundrel, the evidence is conclusive, yet he refuses to confess. A bit of strong-arming is understandable, isn't it?"

Vincent Eames defended.

Cecil Ford asked, "Really? The evidence is conclusive? If it's all conclusive, then just convict him already. Is coercion necessary?"

Coercion is a serious accusation.

Vincent Eames was somewhat flustered when he heard it.

Thinking of how to explain.

Another voice came from the doorway.

"If it's coercion, then Director Ford, isn't your action considered obstruction of justice? Since when does the organization meddle in police investigations?"

Everyone looked up.

The person standing there was indeed Deputy County Executive Caden Dixon.

Behind Caden Dixon was another person, Troy Kane, Secretary of the Political and Legal Affairs Commission and Director of Public Security.

Regarding their appearance.

Cecil Ford was also a bit surprised.

He smiled and said, "I didn't expect that Executive Director Dixon and Secretary Kane are also quite concerned about Dirk Carter, coming to the hospital late at night?"

Caden Dixon certainly understood the sarcasm in those words.

He smirked with disdain, "Compared to Director Ford, we're far off. Clearly, Director Ford arrived earlier."

When seasoned players exchange moves,

there are never any visible weapons.

A few words are enough to convey both what they want and don't want to say.

Cecil Ford said, "I didn't come to visit Dirk Carter, my heart was feeling unwell in the middle of the night, so I came for a check-up, and coincidentally ran into all this. As county leaders, can't I inquire?"

What a reason.

It left Caden Dixon speechless.

After all, if he also claimed that he was unwell and happened to be at the hospital, it might seem too implausible.

Left with no choice, he looked at Troy Kane and said, "Secretary Kane, since the hospital claims Dirk Carter is fine, under such circumstances, shouldn't he be detained?"

Troy Kane immediately understood.

Nodded, saying, "Vincent Eames, take him back to the station, don't linger in the hospital."

"Yes!"

Upon receiving this order, Vincent Eames's eyes lit up with intent.

He approached Dirk Carter, unlocks the handcuffs while saying, "Comrade Dirk Carter, the hospital is a public place, our presence here is affecting the rest of other patients. Now that you're recovered, let's head back to the station. Don't worry, once we're on police premises, I'll make sure you're well taken care of."

The implication was heavy.

It was directed at Dirk Carter and at Cecil Ford.

For Dirk Carter, it was to tell him that the hospital was just an appetizer, once he arrived at the police station, they'd serve a real "feast."

For Cecil Ford, it meant to convey that, though he could flaunt his authority as a county leader, once he takes Dirk Carter to the station, there's nothing he can do.

Caden Dixon was no different.

He gave a provocative look towards Cecil Ford.

Clearly, in this exchange, Caden Dixon had the upper hand.

At this point, Rosalind Sullivan regretted her actions the most.

If she hadn't told Vincent Eames that Dirk Carter was well, perhaps this wouldn't have happened.

If it were just Vincent Eames, she might've "acted out" a bit, but now with so many leaders, as a doctor, she seemed to have no say.

"I'm sorry."

As Dirk Carter was escorted by several police officers past the door, Rosalind Sullivan said softly, like a child admitting to a mistake.

Dirk Carter smiled and said, "I should be the one saying that."

"Let's go."

Vincent Eames shoved him with a scornful tone.

Dirk Carter turned around, looking at him, said, "Director Eames, don't be like this, you might need to release me personally later. If you make it so awkward now, how will you face it then?"

"Release you? You're dreaming, I'll say it again, just wait until we get back to the station and see how I deal with you."

Vincent Eames said disdainfully.

Dirk Carter smiled and said, "In life, one should always leave a path for oneself, or else when there's no way out, it'll surely be regretted."

"If you keep rambling, I'll poke you with the electric baton again, believe me?"

Vincent Eames shouted impatiently.

Dirk Carter was helpless.

He could only shake his head and descend the stairs surrounded by everyone.

Just as they were about to board the police car.

Vincent Eames's phone rang.

He walked to the side and, annoyed, asked, "What?"

No one else could hear what was said on the phone, but his expression suddenly changed.

From incredulous to shocked.

After hanging up, he walked briskly to Troy Kane, whispered a few words in his ear.

Troy Kane was equally shocked.

Then he whispered to Caden Dixon.

Caden Dixon was taken aback, asked, "Are you sure?"

Vincent Eames leaned in from the side, nodded, said, "I'm sure, the forensics department has tested it already, it's indeed the murder weapon used to kill Rand Quance. It has only Rand Quance and Declan Newhart's fingerprints."

"Could it be that Dirk Carter used some means to erase his fingerprints?"

Caden Dixon asked like an outsider.

Vincent Eames shook his head, "If Dirk Carter's fingerprints were erased, then other people's fingerprints wouldn't exist either. Declan Newhart wouldn't take the fall, and if it was an impersonation, the dagger wouldn't have Rand Quance's fingerprints."

His words were an explanation from a professional perspective.

Under this explanation, only one possibility remained.

Dirk Carter wasn't the murderer!

The call came from the Public Security Bureau.

Just over an hour ago, Declan Newhart walked into the county Public Security Bureau building, confessed to killing Rand Quance, and even handed over the murder weapon.

The Public Security Bureau dared not be negligent.

First, they detained Declan Newhart.

Then they urgently tested the murder weapon.

Only after the test results were conclusive did they call Vincent Eames.

This news left the three of them stunned on the spot.

Looking again at Dirk Carter, he was humming a tune, looking utterly carefree.

As if he had already known this would be the result.
