A Bumpy Road to Power

Chapter 224: Can You Drop a Zero?

Kenton County is a coastal city.

It boasts abundant seafood resources.

This is why when tourists come to Kenton County, they must try the authentic local seafood.

The Golden Tongue is a favorite spot for tourists, not only for its variety but also for its nice decor, which has made Harding Vance a lot of money over the years.

Dirk Carter ordered quite a few dishes.

When the various seafood dishes were served, little Gabe Carter was initially a bit shy and didn't dare to pick up his chopsticks.

Perhaps he was hungry, or maybe he had never seen so much delicious food at once. With Dirk Carter's encouragement, he finally picked up his chopsticks and started eating heartily.

They ate for about an hour.

Everyone was full.

Dirk Carter burped and said to the server, "The bill, please. How much is this meal?"

The moment they heard "bill,"

the server quickly brought over the check.

After carefully calculating, the server said, "Sir, the total for this meal is 1,804 yuan."

Spending over 1,800 on a meal startled Gabe's parents.

Dirk Carter waved his hand, reassuring them, then asked the server, "How about rounding off the change?"

"Sure."

Upon the server's agreement,

Dirk Carter opened his wallet.

He pulled out 180 yuan, then found a 5 yuan note and placed it on the table, saying, "185 yuan, keep the one yuan as a tip for your boss."

The server was stunned.

Asked, "Sir, what do you mean by this?"

"It's 184 yuan; I'm giving you 185, plus one yuan as a tip for your boss,"

Dirk Carter said.

The server's face changed immediately and asked, "Sir, you're not joking, are you?"

"Of course not, why would I joke? You said you could round off the change. Isn't 1,804 yuan, when you knock off the zero, 184?"

The server nodded, gritted their teeth, and said, "Fine, I'll get our boss."

In about a minute or two,

a portly man walked in.

The man appeared to be in his late thirties to almost forty, wearing a loose turtleneck sweater and swinging his arms while walking; truth be told, he looked quite like a boss.

As soon as the man entered,

Gabe was so frightened that he burst into tears.

Clearly, the man was Harding Vance without a doubt.

On the way over, the server had already explained the situation, and Harding Vance, thinking it was some kid causing trouble, instantly understood what was going on when he saw Gabe with bandages on his head and the plainly dressed parents.

"I was wondering who it was, turns out it's you. So, couldn't stir up trouble at school, came to my place for some extortion?"

Harding Vance crossed his arms, looking smug and arrogant.

"What do you mean by extortion? We came to eat,"

Dirk Carter suddenly spoke up.

Harding Vance cast his gaze on Dirk Carter, furrowed his brows, and asked, "Who are you?"

"I'm the child's uncle; my name is Dirk Carter,"

Dirk Carter replied.

Harding Vance burst into laughter upon hearing this.

He gave Dirk Carter a disdainful look and asked, "So, you're here to stand up for the kid?"

"You could say that, yes,"

Dirk Carter said casually.

Harding Vance chuckled triumphantly and said, "What status or rank do you have? Coming to stand up in my place, are you out of your mind or just overly self-confident?"

Dirk Carter, unperturbed, gave a slight smile and said, "Are you implying, Mr. Vance, that you don't intend to deal with this matter?"

"Deal with what? Complete the payment and get out!"

He seemed unwilling to waste any more time.

Dirk Carter's eyes turned sinister as he inquired, "Let me ask again, Mr. Vance, how do you plan to handle this matter?"

"Damn it, refusing a toast only to drink a forfeit, are we? Something that doesn't know its place, call the security from downstairs here!"

Harding Vance barked at the server.

The server immediately pulled out a walkie-talkie.

A sound of dense footsteps was heard,

and four security guards arrived at the entrance of the room.

Harding Vance sneered and said, "If you're smart, pay the bill and leave. If not, I'm afraid your uncle's head might end up wrapped like yours."

This statement

left Dirk Carter silent for a moment.

He nodded, stood up,

and said, "Alright, I gave you a chance, but you didn't cherish it. Since that's the case, I won't be polite. I don't want compensation, but you'll have to pay some price. Your restaurant has good decor; perhaps I'll vent my anger on it."

"Hahaha… You? I'd lend you the guts to do so ten times over, but still, you wouldn't dare…"

Just as he finished speaking,

there was a crash from downstairs,

like something had broken.

Next came the exclamations of customers and the shouts of servers.

In a blink of an eye, the entire downstairs hall was in chaos.

Harding Vance glanced over the railing, suddenly panicking.

Over twenty people with clubs rushed in, starting to smash the facilities, even the tanks for the seafood weren't spared.

Suddenly, the expansive hall was in a mess.

"Call the police, hurry…"

Sweat beaded on Harding Vance's forehead as he yelled at the servers.

Just then,

a woman in a red dress strolled in slowly from the main entrance, looked up at Harding Vance on the second floor, and asked, "Mr. Vance, are you planning to call the police on me?"

Harding Vance's eyes went wide.

It was clear his legs were trembling.

He hurriedly ran down the stairs, came up to the woman in the red dress, and said with a quivering voice, "Sis… Sis Rosie, uh… has your brother done anything to displease you? Please show mercy, spare your brother."

As mentioned before,

Declan Newhart is the biggest crime boss in Kenton County.

Rosie is Declan Newhart's woman; who in Kenton County doesn't know this?

Declan Newhart got caught.

Rosie took over The Tonight Club and also all of Declan Newhart's underlings, becoming a legitimate big shot—something the general public might not know, but how could a businessman like Harding Vance not know?

"No,"

Rosie said expressionlessly.

Harding Vance was stunned, "No? Then…"

Just as he was about to ask, he felt a tap on his shoulder, and turning around sharply, he saw Dirk Carter, along with the bullied family of three following behind.

"Could it be, Rosie only listens to me?"

Dirk Carter asked with a smile.

Standing between the two,

Harding Vance glanced around, instantly grasping some understanding.

So this whole time, Rosie came to back up Dirk Carter.

In his perplexity, a car came to a halt at the entrance, and as the door opened, Ivan Pitts, the head of the discipline department at No. 7 Primary School, got out. Seeing The Golden Tongue Seafood House in disarray, he too was puzzled.

Walking to the entrance,

he asked, "Mr. Vance, what's going on here?"

"Director Pitts, perfect timing, come and see; your student's parents are causing trouble at my place. Please help me deal with this."

Seeing Ivan Pitts felt like seeing a savior to Harding Vance, who dragged Pitts in.

Ivan Pitts was utterly confused, "My student's parents, who?"

He looked up and saw Dirk Carter smiling and waving at him from ahead, causing his knees to buckle, "Dirk… Dirk…"

"Yes, that's him, his name is Dirk Carter!"

Harding Vance chimed in.

Dirk Carter said, "Director Pitts, long time no see."

Ivan Pitts wasn't an idiot.

Upon noticing the bandaged Gabe behind Dirk Carter, he instantly understood and stepped forward, approaching Dirk Carter, "Dirk… Let me explain."

Dirk Carter waved his hand and said, "No need to explain, I already know. Director Pitts handled it well, but no need to handle it anymore. Starting today, you're relieved of your duties as the director of the discipline department at No. 7 Primary School. As for other issues, I'll dispatch a committee to investigate you."
