A Bumpy Road to Power

Chapter 261: Tanhua Lane

Dirk Carter was once again taken aback.

He repeated the license plate number into the phone.

Then hung up the call.

"How did you know the license plate number?"

Dirk Carter asked.

Arlo Yarbrough always wore a cheerful expression and said, "Because I saw it."

"No, I mean, you came in right after that girl left, and while you did catch up to her, how did you know she got into the car you mentioned?"

Dirk Carter inquired.

Arlo Yarbrough chuckled and replied, "When I came in, the driver was wearing a baseball cap and a mask, acting all secretive. Besides, only that car was using a fake license plate—I could tell at a glance."

A glance and he could tell?

Is he really that skilled?

At this moment, Dirk Carter suddenly felt the need to reassess the man in front of him, this seemingly innocent 'Mr. Chuckle.'

Always with a smile, peeping, fond of married women—altogether creating the image of a sleazy man.

But he's also remarkably skilled, with a nose like a bloodhound and an impressive insight.

"Are you sure you want to pursue Beibei?"

Dirk Carter asked seriously.

Arlo Yarbrough nodded repeatedly and said, "I'm sure I want to pursue her."

"Then tell me, what are her characteristics?"

Dirk Carter asked.

Arlo Yarbrough thought for a moment and replied, "If you're talking about characteristics, she has a mole below her left chest, not big, could be removed by laser. Also, she has a small birthmark on her inner thigh, and, additionally, her bottom is a bit rough, probably from prolonged sitting..."

Before he could finish.

Dirk Carter grabbed a book from the coffee table and threw it at him.

Furious, he said, "I'm asking you what kind of person she is, and all you think about is peeping. Don't you have any ambition?"

"Hehe."

Arlo Yarbrough scratched his head and laughed foolishly, saying, "I've just seen too much, it's become a habit."

While Dirk Carter was arguing with Arlo Yarbrough.

On Ninghui Road, the main thoroughfare of Kenton County, an Audi A6 slowly approached the entrance of Tanhua Alley.

Tanhua Alley is Kenton County's best-preserved ancient street, named because multiple scholars who ranked third on the imperial examination hailed from there during the Ming and Qing dynasties.

Tanhua Alley is about 100 meters long.

Though not very long, it boasts several dozen ancient architectural complexes.

Serenity State had long ago designated Tanhua Alley as a historical and cultural relic for protection. Ardmore City and Kenton County also invested heavily in the restoration of Tanhua Alley.

They planned to officially open it to the public after the New Year.

However, among the many old residences, there's one that is not intended to be opened to the public, located right in the center—the General's Residence.

Kenton County used to be the political and cultural center of Serenity's eastern region, and the General's Residence was once the mansion of Basil Walsh, the General of the Garrison.

Because Basil Walsh is from Veridia,

the interior of the mansion was designed according to the specifications of Veridia's gardens, complete with pavilions, bridges, and streams.

At the entrance to Tanhua Alley, although a sign prohibits vehicles from entering,

the guards at the gate still opened the barriers to let the Audi car through.

The wheels rolled over the ancient stone slabs, making a clattering sound.

Soon enough,

the vehicle stopped at the entrance of the General's Residence.

A young man stepped out of the passenger seat, looked around to ensure no one was nearby, and then opened the rear door. A man in his fifties got out of the car with his head down.

On the other side, a woman wearing sunglasses did the same, walking hurriedly with the man into the General's Residence.

Before long,

the main gate shut with a bang.

"Welcome to Kenton County, Mayor Levin."

At the gate,

two men in administrative jackets appeared.

The one walking in front was tall and slender with a slight hunchback, none other than Bjorn Dixon, the newly-appointed Deputy Secretary of the County Committee and Acting County Mayor of Kenton County. Following behind him was Caden Dixon, the Executive Deputy Mayor.

"Hello, Comrade Morgan, and Comrade Dixon."

The person who just came in was Kelton Levin, the Deputy Secretary of the Ardmore City Committee and Mayor.

They each shook hands.

Caden Dixon looked at the woman behind Kelton Levin.

Kelton Levin smiled and said, "She's Ardmore City TV's shining star, Elsie Eames."

"Oh, so it's the famous Miss Eames, a pleasure to meet you."

Caden Dixon immediately went up to shake hands with Elsie Eames.

Elsie Eames just smiled slightly and didn't say anything.

"Please, leaders, this way."

Bjorn Dixon made a welcoming gesture.

Kelton Levin strolled forward with his hands clasped behind his back.

"I've never been in Basil Walsh's mansion before; I didn't expect it to be so grand, no less stunning than the famous gardens of Veridia."

Kelton Levin repeatedly praised.

Bjorn Dixon quickly said, "Leaders, this is all thanks to Comrade Dixon. Ever since the renovation of Tanhua Alley started, Comrade Dixon worked tirelessly to create such a reserve for us. So when the leaders visit, there's no worry about a place to stay."

A city mayor coming to Kenton County couldn't possibly lack a place to stay?

Yet this comment made Caden Dixon feel elated.

Kelton Levin suddenly stopped walking, turned around, and asked, "Comrade Dixon, is this reserve for you then? Otherwise, why am I only finding out about it now?"

With that one sentence, Caden Dixon's smile vanished from his face.

His heart suddenly raced to his throat.

Just as he was contemplating how to "argue," Kelton Levin laughed heartily, patted Caden Dixon on the shoulder, and said, "Just kidding, Comrade Dixon, you wouldn't be mad, would you?"

"Not at all, not at all. As long as the leaders are happy, I won't be mad at all."

Caden Dixon nodded and bowed low in response.

They passed through a corridor full of ancient charm.

Bjorn Dixon opened a door.

It was a freshly refurbished room, filled with various ancient decorations.

In the middle, a square table covered with a red cloth gave an air of mystery.

"What's this?"

Kelton Levin asked, intrigued.

Caden Dixon promptly stepped forward with respect and said, "Leaders, be my guest and unveil it."

"Hahaha, a surprise? Sure, I'll take a look."

Saying that, he pulled at the red cloth.

A mahjong table emerged.

Unlike the mahjong tables on the market.

This table was also in a vintage style, and the set of mahjong tiles on it seemed to be made of special material—it felt substantial in hand.

"This set of mahjong can't be cheap."

Kelton Levin rubbed the tiles with his hand and said.

Caden Dixon promptly said, "Knowing the leader enjoys some entertainment in leisure, it's specially crafted for the leader. When you leave, I'll have Secretary Yu pack it up."

"Oh, you certainly know how to cater to preferences, very good."

"Thank you, leader, for your praise."

Caden Dixon replied delightedly.

Kelton Levin sat down at the mahjong table, playing with the tiles, and suddenly looked at Caden Dixon with a somber expression, asking, "Comrade Dixon, you've hidden quite well. I thought Yorke Payne was the number one corrupt official in Kenton County, but it seems it's you."

At that moment.

Caden Dixon's back broke out in a sweat.

His hands also began to tremble uncontrollably.

Bjorn Dixon, seeing this.

Quickly said, "Comrade Dixon, the leader wants to play, accompany the leader for a bit."

Caden Dixon suddenly realized.

Promptly said, "Leader, it's still early for dinner, how about I accompany you for a game?"

"Just the two of us?"

Kelton Levin asked.

Caden Dixon shook his head repeatedly and said, "I also specially prepared two mahjong experts for the leader; how about some friendly competition?"

Kelton Levin maintained his expression and looked at Bjorn Dixon, asking, "Shall we have a match?"

"It's the first day of the New Year, the leader has been busy all year and needs some relaxation. I'll take Miss Eames for a walk outside, and I'll come back to invite you all for dinner."

Bjorn Dixon promptly said with understanding.

As they both walked out.

Two men in suits entered.

Just as they brushed past Elsie Eames.
