A Bumpy Road to Power

Chapter 278: Calling to Account

Gwendolyn Lewis opened the door.

Sure enough, it was Gauthier Pace at the door.

Gauthier Pace was 32 this year, a department-level cadre in Harmony County.

As mentioned before, his parents also retired from the system. Although their ranks weren't very high, he was still considered a second-generation official.

Gauthier Pace, as a person, is quite good-looking, standing at a height of 1.77 meters with a reasonably proportioned physique. If anything was to be said about a flaw, it would be the beer belly, but it's something he developed in recent years.

He walked in.

And started searching around Gwendolyn Lewis's room.

He checked under the bed and in the closet.

Then hurried into the bathroom for a careful look.

Finally returned to the living room, pulled open the curtains, and searched again.

"What are you looking for?"

Gwendolyn Lewis asked, somewhat displeased.

Gauthier Pace frowned, glanced at Gwendolyn Lewis in her pajamas, and asked, "Why did you lock the door?"

"I was showering, is it not normal to lock the door?"

"Then why are you only now coming to open the door?"

"Didn't I just say I was showering? Heard the knocking, got dressed, and came."

Gwendolyn Lewis explained.

Gauthier Pace still felt something was off.

Appraising his wife, he said, "Take off your clothes."

"Why?"

"Why? Why do I ask you to take off your clothes? Can I do you?"

Gauthier Pace snapped angrily.

Gwendolyn Lewis didn't want to bother with him, mumbled "sick," and turned to head back to her bedroom.

Unexpectedly, Gauthier Pace suddenly burst into action, grabbing Gwendolyn Lewis's arm, saying, "Stand here. Let me ask you, you haven't visited me in Harmony County for over a month now. You used to go every week, and recently, when I call you, you're indifferent. Is there someone else outside?"

"Are you sick?"

Gwendolyn Lewis yelled angrily.

Gauthier Pace nodded and said, "I'm sick? Is it me who's sick or you? Take off your clothes for inspection!"

Gwendolyn Lewis certainly didn't dare to undress.

The more tightly she held on, the more suspicious Gauthier Pace became.

Drawing closer, he abruptly took action.

Gwendolyn Lewis still tried to cover up.

But how could she be a match for a man?

In the midst of their entanglement, the long robe nightgown on her body was forcibly ripped off by Gauthier Pace.

"What's going on with your body?"

Gauthier Pace asked.

Though a bit panicked inside, Gwendolyn Lewis calmly said, "I had enteritis a few days ago, got someone to give me a cupping massage."

"Cupping massage? You had a massage, and it even reached your chest, and there's also marks on your buttocks, did the massage include that?"

Gauthier Pace snorted coldly.

Gwendolyn Lewis retorted, "Who says you can't massage the chest and buttocks?"

Gauthier Pace saw she still wouldn't admit it.

Pointing between her legs, he said, "Fine, massage. Have a look at your private parts, they are still inflamed, is this also from the massage? You slut, clearly just came back from a date with a wild man, right? How is it, felt good with another man?"

"Yes, felt great!"

Since she had been uncovered.

Gwendolyn Lewis decided not to hide anymore.

Pointing to her lower regions, she said, "Just now, a few hours ago, a handsome man visited and made me feel great, how's that, satisfied?"

Bang!

Gauthier Pace slapped her on the face.

This slap was vicious.

Gwendolyn Lewis spun around, leaving a red handprint on her face.

"You shameless whore, you dare speak like that, utterly shameless."

Gwendolyn Lewis held her face, retorting, "I'm shameless? Fine, since it's all out now, I won't pretend anymore."

After saying this.

Gwendolyn Lewis went into the bedroom.

Took out a thick envelope, slammed it on the coffee table, and said, "Open it up and see if I'm shameless."

Gauthier Pace furiously opened the envelope.

Out fell a pile of photos, scattered on the ground.

Randomly picked up a couple, inside were scenes of Gauthier Pace embracing women, some with lips, some with hands, and even a few showing him exiting a hotel arm in arm with women. Searching casually, there were no less than a dozen women.

"You had someone follow me?"

Gauthier Pace asked.

Gwendolyn Lewis sneered, saying, "Since last year, over the span of half a year, I hired someone to take these photos, Director Pace. You've been quite busy this half year. Just from my private detective alone, there are 16 different women in total. It's not because I have someone else outside, but rather I find you too dirty, not wanting to touch you. You dare come here accusing me? Where is your face?"

Having his scandal revealed.

Gauthier Pace was momentarily speechless.

He sat down on the sofa, thought for a moment, and said, "Alright, I won't hold this against you. Just tell me who the man is, and I'll let you go."

"Then you don't need to let me go, the worst case is mutual destruction."

Gwendolyn Lewis said coldly.

Gauthier Pace nodded and said, "Fine, you won't say? No problem, I'll find out myself. If I find out who the man is, I'll kill him."

After throwing down this sentence.

Gauthier Pace walked out the door.

Leaving the room in disarray and Gwendolyn Lewis slumped on the ground.

However, she didn't cry; instead, her gaze became resolute.

The next morning.

Dirk Carter, with Yves Quill's help, had just moved personal belongings into the office, when Bjorn Dixon showed up before he could finish organizing.

"Hello, County Mayor Dixon."

Dirk Carter hurriedly put down his things and respectfully greeted Bjorn Dixon.

Bjorn Dixon smiled warmly and asked, "Dirk Carter, are you satisfied with this office?"

"Satisfied, satisfied, it's nice."

Dirk Carter nodded repeatedly.

Bjorn Dixon chuckled and said, "Glad to hear. This office was intentionally tidied up by Director Delano as per my request, with not much alteration, maintaining its original appearance."

"Thank you, County Mayor Dixon, that's so generous of you."

Dirk Carter said.

Bjorn Dixon waved his hand, saying, "We're colleagues now, no need for formalities. It's not me you should thank, but Yorke Payne."

After saying this, he looked over at Delano and asked, "Director Delano, where did Yorke Payne die back then?"

Delano pointed at the desk beside Dirk Carter and said, "Yorke Payne probably committed suicide right there in that spot."

"Oh? And where was the body found?"

Bjorn Dixon continued asking.

Delano, clearly understanding what Bjorn Dixon meant, said, "When the body was found, it was lying under the desk, surrounded by blood, with some brain matter."

"Tsk tsk, that's truly disgusting."

Bjorn Dixon mockingly exclaimed.

Then, smilingly looked at Dirk Carter and said, "Dirk Carter, I remember Yorke Payne was forced to death by you, right? You say, if you stay in this office, come across work overtime or a duty shift, will Yorke Payne come looking for you? Hahaha…"

His words were already laced with sarcasm.

The others behind him also began to laugh.

After all, Bjorn Dixon is the head of the county government, whereas Dirk Carter, though a deputy county mayor, isn't even part of the Standing Committee. Moreover, the county government staff didn't particularly like Dirk Carter, so such a scenario seemed inevitable.

His goal was simple.

To provoke Dirk Carter.

However, Dirk Carter didn't react, just smiled and said, "County Mayor Dixon, I'm a firm materialist; I never believe in ghosts and spirits. But from what you've said, does County Mayor Dixon have research in this area? Or is County Mayor Dixon a closet metaphysical believer within the system?"

With that said.

The atmosphere suddenly became tense.

Everyone's laughter abruptly ceased.

Bjorn Dixon also had a gloomy expression, appearing on the verge of anger but still forcibly held it back, smiling while saying, "Dirk Carter, it seems you have no sense of humor, taking a joke so seriously, haha… Youthful, quite youthful indeed..."
