A Bumpy Road to Power

Chapter 29: You Mustn't Forget Me

If women are made of water.

Then a mature woman is made of floodwaters.

Passionate and unrestrained.

A few simple teasing motions of the fingers.

And Delilah Goodman was already finding it hard to bear, even her gaze had grown misty.

She turned around and sat on Dirk Carter's lap.

Her burning lips pressed against him.

"The door hasn't... hasn't been locked yet."

Dirk Carter said with some concern.

Delilah didn't care about all this, she quickly removed the last barrier from under her skirt, then clumsily pulled open Dirk Carter's belt...

Outside the office, people were coming and going.

No one knew that inside the office, they had already begun rolling around on the sofa.

For over half an hour.

They finally ended their vigorous encounter.

Both drenched in sweat.

Snuggling against Dirk Carter's broad chest, Delilah said reluctantly, "When you go to the Work Safety Administration, we'll have fewer chances to meet."

Dirk Carter's fingers were playing on her chest.

He asked with a grin, "What? Are you afraid that you won't find someone to release your loneliness with?"

"Oh, stop it, I'm serious. I don't care; every weekend, you have to come to my house to see me. And if things aren't going smoothly at work, call me, and you can come to our Health Bureau as the Deputy Director."

Dirk Carter laughed and said, "It's not like you own the organization department. Just because you want someone to be a Deputy Director doesn't mean they can be. Going to the Work Safety Administration is indeed fraught with danger, but I think I can handle it!"

"Then don't forget about me."

The usually icy Director Goodman was like a kitten in Dirk Carter's arms.

Dirk Carter chuckled and said, "Forget you? I would never."

"Then let's go again?"

"Again?!"

Before he had a chance to refuse.

Delilah once more mounted him.

And began another whirlwind affair...

Two days later.

Dirk Carter hurried to the Health Bureau for the work handover.

Originally, Fordham Wright was supposed to take the lead in organizing a farewell party for him, but Dirk Carter declined.

The full name of the Work Safety Administration is the Safety Production Supervision Administration, which, as the name suggests, manages safety production.

It oversees everything from small street shops to large enterprises and projects with safety risks.

It is said to have great power, but it is also a highly risky unit.

In the event of a major safety production accident in the jurisdiction, the Work Safety Administration is always the first to bear the brunt.

This is why it is often said that the leaders of the Work Safety Administration sit not on chairs, but on powder kegs.

The Stillwater County Work Safety Administration has three leaders, one chief and two deputies.

The Director, Party Secretary, and Safety Committee Office Director, Dougray Hayes, is 53 years old and is said to be a nice guy.

The Deputy Director, Party Committee Member, and Deputy Director of the Safety Committee Office, Adair Meyer, is 28 years old, the same age as Dirk Carter, and is a genuine second-generation official. His father, Juwan Meyer, is the current Vice Chairman of the Ardmore City Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.

His mother, Sophia Vincent, is the Deputy Secretary of the County Committee in neighboring Eastgate County.

The whole family is involved in the Ardmore City political scene.

Dirk Carter had heard about Adair Meyer quite early on.

About a year or so ago.

Adair Meyer was transferred from the City Work Safety Administration to become the Deputy Director of the Stillwater County Work Safety Administration.

For the appointment of a minor deputy department chief, even the County Secretary, Donal Lewis, attended his inauguration, which shows how influential Adair Meyer was at that time.

There have always been rumors that he was meant to be the next Director of the Work Safety Administration.

Although the truth is unknown, this possibility does not seem small so far.

After the work handover at the Health Bureau, it was already evening.

Then Dirk Carter hurried to the County Committee Organization Department to handle other procedures.

The Stillwater County Committee and County Government compound is located on Government Front Road in the old town district of Stillwater County.

Both buildings are halfway up the hill.

The building on the left is the County Committee building, and the one on the right is the County Government building.

When Dylan Tate was still around, Dirk Carter often came here, so he was quite familiar with the compound's environment.

The Organization Department's office area is on the fourth floor of the County Committee building.

Just as he pushed open the door.

A young woman holding a folder came walking over in high heels.

"Excuse me, are you Deputy Director Carter?"

"I am, may I ask..."

The woman smiled gently and said, "Minister Grant asked me to receive you."

Minister Grant?

Alfie Grant?

Dirk Carter felt a slight sense of alarm.

The Minister Grant the woman spoke of is precisely the County Committee Member, Standing Committee Member, and the Organization Department Minister, Alfie Grant.

The notification Dirk Carter received was to go to the Deputy Minister's office to handle the appointment procedures, since the appointment of a Deputy Director of the Work Safety Administration would not normally attract the attention of the Minister of the Organization Department.

Moreover, Dirk Carter and Alfie Grant had no prior connections.

Logically speaking, as Dylan Tate's adopted son, he had interacted with some of the county leaders.

He indeed knew quite a few.

But not Alfie Grant.

Because Alfie Grant had only been in his position for a relatively short time, seemingly only three or four months.

Led by the woman.

Dirk Carter arrived at the door of the Minister's office.

The woman knocked on the door.

And said, "Director Carter, you may go in. Minister Grant is waiting for you."

Dirk Carter felt somewhat bewildered.

As he opened the door.

The originally seated Alfie Grant surprisingly stood up to greet him.

"Ah, young Carter, I've been waiting and waiting for you to finally arrive."

As he said this, Alfie Grant's face was filled with smiles.

Dirk Carter was somewhat flattered and said, "Hello, Minister Grant."

"Come, come, sit, quickly sit."

Holding Dirk Carter's hand, Alfie Grant let him sit down beside him.

He appeared very friendly.

Then he presented Dirk Carter with a cup of tea.

Pretending to be sad, he said, "Young Carter, since County Head Tate's incident, I've actually wanted to go see him, but I've been too busy and couldn't find the time. Today, hearing that you're coming, I felt I had to talk to you a bit..."

Dylan Tate's funeral had already taken place not long ago.

Aside from some retired leaders, none of the current leaders had shown up, not even some of the county government heads who intentionally avoided attending.

Alfie Grant had no particular relationship with Dylan Tate.

It was normal for him not to show up.

Yet he deliberately said such things, clearly to extend goodwill.

"Minister Grant, no matter what, I thank you on behalf of Uncle Tate."

Dirk Carter said.

Alfie Grant patted Dirk Carter on the shoulder and said, "You see, it's already closing time. Why don't you join me for a simple meal?"

"Minister Grant, how can I... I should be the one treating you."

"Alright, enough with the formalities, let's go."

Having said that.

Alfie Grant lifted Dirk Carter to his feet.

"Minister Grant, my procedures still need to be handled."

"No need for you to handle it anymore. I've already arranged for someone to take care of it."

Just like that, Dirk Carter, who hadn't even warmed his seat, was taken by Alfie Grant to his car.

Along the way, Alfie Grant seemed very enthusiastic, inquiring about Dirk Carter's family background and offering a lot of encouragement.

He seemed to be offering some advice for the future.

As the sky darkened.

The two got out of the car at the entrance of a very modest-looking rustic restaurant.

For ordinary people.

They would probably think of Alfie Grant as approachable and kind. Some might even, given the circumstances, delude themselves into believing that Alfie Grant had taken a liking to them, thus securing a benefactor for their career.

But Dirk Carter had been by Dylan Tate's side for ten years.

The intricacies of the political arena were already second nature to him.

He knew that today's meal was surely not simple...
