A Bumpy Road to Power

Chapter 285: Seeing a Living Ghost

"I'm done with what I wanted to say, County Mayor Dixon, do you have anything to add?"

Helen Fletcher asked Bjorn Dixon.

This meeting was organized on short notice.

Bjorn Dixon hadn't prepared any speech, he was stunned for just a second.

Helen Fletcher then said, "It seems County Mayor Dixon has nothing more to say. Alright, meeting adjourned."

Saying this, Helen Fletcher walked out of the meeting room.

The entire meeting lasted less than ten minutes.

Some people had just arrived in the corridor and were told they couldn't go in, so they obediently stood outside. When they saw Helen Fletcher coming out, they all greeted her.

Helen Fletcher initially didn't acknowledge them.

Halfway down the corridor, she suddenly stopped in her tracks.

With a cold look at the tardy ones, she said, "In the future, if anyone is late for my meetings, then don't bother attending them at all."

After saying this, she quickly left again.

Was this really Helen Fletcher?

Dirk Carter remembered how she seemed so pitiful, like a kitten, when she was at the hospital and his house, but now, the natural authority and pressure she exuded was even stronger than all the men present, which was truly astonishing.

Just after stepping out of the meeting room.

Caden Dixon quickly came to his side and quietly asked, "Do you know the new Secretary Helen?"

"Uh... well..."

Dirk Carter hadn't yet figured out what to say.

Caden Dixon muttered with a frown, "You can't possibly know her, maybe I'm overthinking it..."

Just about to leave.

He was grabbed by Dirk Carter.

He asked, "Uncle Caden, who exactly is this Secretary Helen? Why does it seem like everyone is afraid of her?"

"You don't know?"

Dirk Carter shook his head and said, "I don't know."

Caden Dixon looked around and said, "Secretary Helen came down from the State Commission for Discipline Inspection. After that, she stayed at the Municipal Commission for a while, but didn't hold a specific position."

"What's so scary about coming from the State Commission for Discipline Inspection?"

Dirk Carter muttered.

Caden Dixon said, "There's nothing to fear about coming from the State Commission for Discipline Inspection, but have you heard of the case of the philandering secretary in Kenston City?"

Dirk Carter nodded and said, "The one who kept over 140 mistresses?"

Caden Dixon hummed in agreement and said, "The former Municipal Secretary of Kenston City, who was related to the provincial leadership, was brought down by her."

"Secretary Helen is that impressive?"

"That's not even her most impressive feat. Do you know who her father-in-law is?"

"Who?"

Dirk Carter asked.

Caden Dixon pointed to the ceiling with his finger and said, "The Secretary-General of the Provincial Committee next door to us."

"And her husband?"

Dirk Carter asked.

Caden Dixon tapped him on the head and said, "I know what you're thinking. I won't deny that Secretary Helen is indeed beautiful, but you can't get involved with a woman like that, or you'll regret it for the rest of your life."

"When did I say I was going to get involved with her?"

Dirk Carter said, feeling wronged.

Caden Dixon gave him a disdainful look and said, "You're just like your father."

"Huh? My dad is also popular with women?"

"See, see, you just gave yourself away,"

Caden Dixon joked.

Honestly.

Dirk Carter couldn't fully accept that Helen Fletcher was the new County Committee Secretary the entire day.

After work, he went home and lay on the floor out of the blue.

He recalled the moment when Helen Fletcher stood in front of him with her legs apart that day.

When he helped wipe the two words on the butterfly, her most private part was only thirty or forty centimeters away, and the visual impact was still fresh in his memory.

It seems people really have two sides.

No matter how tough a woman appears on the outside, she has a vulnerable side too.

Knock knock knock.

The knocking suddenly started.

Dirk Carter scrambled up from the floor.

He ran to the door.

As soon as he opened the door.

Arlo Yarbrough was standing there with several lunchboxes, grinning stupidly at Dirk Carter.

"Haven't eaten yet, right? Look, I brought you some food."

Arlo Yarbrough waved the lunchboxes in his hand as he said.

Dirk Carter took a closer look, and sure enough, they were lunchboxes, quite a few of them actually.

He quickly let him in.

Arlo Yarbrough placed the packed boxes on the table, spreading them out, and surprisingly there were seven or eight of them.

After opening the lids, Dirk Carter found that each was a fancy dish, each looking rather pricey.

"Did you win the lottery?"

Dirk Carter asked.

Arlo Yarbrough chuckled and said, "Listen to you. Without winning the lottery, I can't treat my buddy to a meal?"

"Hmm? So generous?"

Dirk Carter casually picked up a mantis shrimp and started peeling it with interest. While peeling, he asked, "What? Didn't Beibei come?"

"What do you mean didn't Beibei come? Go where?"

Arlo Yarbrough asked.

Dirk Carter gave him a disdainful look and said, "Don't think I don't know, these dishes were packed from your restaurant. Knowing your personality, you wouldn't order such expensive stuff, it must have been to treat Beibei."

"Hehe, no, it was just to treat you,"

Dirk Carter saw he was not admitting it.

So he simply threw the mantis shrimp back and said, "Then I won't eat it."

"Alright, alright, I admit, they were packed from my restaurant..."

He told Dirk Carter that today Beibei was supposed to treat him to a meal. He arrived at the restaurant early, ordered the dishes in advance to treat Beibei, but when it was time to eat, Beibei told him her husband's dinner was canceled, and she had to rush back to cook for him. With so many dishes, Arlo Yarbrough couldn't finish them, so he thought he'd just bring them over.

"I knew it, you wouldn't be so generous,"

Dirk Carter said disdainfully.

Arlo Yarbrough said, "But I have you in mind, you see, such good food, why didn't I give it to someone else?"

"That's true, I'll give you that,"

Dirk Carter picked up the chopsticks.

Arlo Yarbrough smirked mischievously, got close to Dirk Carter, and asked, "We're brothers, aren't we?"

"Yeah, so what?"

"Look, this meal costs 800 yuan, since we're brothers, let's split it. Just give me 500."

Dirk Carter's hand stopped instantly.

He asked, "What the heck... 800 yuan, why would I pay 500 for an AA split?"

"Hehe, isn't there also a delivery service? I packed and brought these from so far, you've got to give me some reward for my hard work, right?"

Arlo Yarbrough said shamelessly.

Dirk Carter gritted his teeth and was about to stab Arlo Yarbrough with the chopsticks when suddenly a cough sounded at the door.

Both Dirk Carter and Arlo Yarbrough stopped in their tracks and looked towards the door. They didn't know when, but Helen Fletcher had appeared at the door.

"Looking for you?"

Arlo Yarbrough asked.

Dirk Carter nodded, acknowledging.

Arlo Yarbrough chuckled lewdly and said, "You lucky guy, a different beauty every day, huh."

"Don't talk nonsense!"

Dirk Carter scolded.

Arlo Yarbrough pointed his finger and joked, "Haha, you're even getting shy. Tsk tsk tsk, what's there to pretend about, the beauty is at your door, yet you're still putting on airs, really don't know..."

The last few words hadn't even come out yet.

Dirk Carter gave him a shove, saying, "The new County Committee Secretary Helen."

The smile on Arlo Yarbrough's face suddenly froze.

"Se… Secretary Helen,"

Arlo Yarbrough called out.

Helen Fletcher smiled slightly and walked in.

Arlo Yarbrough nodded and bent over, asking, "Secretary Helen, haven't eaten yet?"

"No,"

Helen Fletcher said.

Arlo Yarbrough quickly pointed to the table full of dishes and said, "Secretary Helen, I'm a friend of Dirk Carter, and Dirk knows you haven't eaten yet, so he asked me to bring these dishes over, you've come just in time."

After saying this.

He looked at Dirk Carter, held out his hand, and said, "Comrade Dirk, your meals have arrived, it'll be 1,000 yuan in total."

"You..."

Dirk Carter was furious.

Seeing his angry look, Arlo Yarbrough intentionally asked loudly, "Comrade Dirk, you wouldn't want to treat Secretary Helen to a meal and make her pay, would you?"
