A Bumpy Road to Power

Chapter 309: Victory Is Mine

The fire of desire in his heart was about to consume him.

Just as Bjorn Dixon's hand was about to move deeper.

Elsie Eames stopped him.

"County Mayor Dixon, I've come today for a promise. A promise that the leader once gave me. How can I trust you?"

Elsie Eames' words made Bjorn Dixon uneasy.

Indeed, empty words seemed too vague.

He asked, "Elsie, what do you want? I'll buy it for you."

Elsie Eames thought for a moment and said, "I don't lack money, what I lack is love. If County Mayor Dixon really cares for me, then invite me to dinner tomorrow night. It could be a kind of ceremony, and after the dinner, I'll give myself to you without reservation. But today, I'm just not in the mood."

Her words had gone this far.

If Bjorn Dixon still appeared eager, it would seem inappropriate.

As the saying goes, haste makes waste.

Good things come to those who wait.

He gritted his teeth and said, "Okay, Elsie, I'll come for you tomorrow."

"Mm, I'll be waiting."

Although there were countless things he was reluctant to part with in his heart.

He still stood up in order to maintain the image of a gentleman.

Bjorn Dixon bid farewell, reluctant but determined.

Standing at the door, Elsie Eames watched him leave until he got on the elevator. Only then did she turn back, returned to the sofa, and lit a cigarette, leisurely smoking it.

"Gone?"

A man's voice suddenly came from the doorway.

Elsie Eames looked up and saw Dirk Carter.

"Gone,"

Elsie Eames responded, extinguishing the cigarette, and said, "Men, they're all the same."

"Including me?"

Dirk Carter asked.

Elsie Eames smiled and asked, "How are you any different from them? Aren't you tempted by beauty? Or are you not fascinated by power?"

Dirk Carter pondered for a moment.

Nodded and said, "It seems to be the case."

Seeing Dirk Carter's admission, Elsie Eames chuckled, crossing her legs in front of Dirk Carter.

In the gap of switching legs.

The robe couldn't cover the space between her legs, attracting Dirk Carter's gaze like an abyss.

Elsie Eames leaned forward.

Propping her chin with one hand, she stared at Dirk Carter in front of her, and asked, "Does Deputy Carter plan to stay overnight?"

"Oh, no, no, no, Miss Eames, have a good rest. I'll take my leave."

Saying that, he turned and left.

Even when leaving, he didn't forget to close the door.

Elsie Eames smiled slyly.

She stood up.

Walked to the bathroom door.

With slender, long fingers, she gently pulled on the belt in the middle of the robe.

That robe fell limply to the ground.

In the mirror, her delicate neck and sweet face reflected. She let out a cold laugh and murmured, "Men..."

Monday morning at ten o'clock.

In the small garden square diagonally opposite the county government building.

In the center stood two red charity boxes, each marked with "Carter" and "Holloway".

Representing Dirk Carter and Wilbur Holloway, respectively.

Beside the donation boxes were two tables, with each secretary exchanging seats, existing as observers.

Behind them, a row of chairs had been placed. Quite a few county government leaders had already arrived.

After all, it was a donation organized internally by the county government, so nobody from The County Committee came over.

Most people didn't want to involve themselves in such a "farce".

Around 10:05.

Dirk Carter appeared at the donation site.

Once he arrived.

Yves Quill, who had been waiting for him, immediately stood up, hurried over, and whispered, "Leader, two messages, President Ford from Apex Group called. Their account has been frozen, so it's no use coming today. He said he's not coming."

Dirk Carter was taken aback, asked, "Oh? What happened?"

"It's a local decoration company in Kenton County. They reported being defrauded by Apex Group. Early this morning, our economic investigation team rushed to the bank and froze their payment accounts."

Dirk Carter was silent for a moment, disdainfully smirked, and said, "Quite a trick, really has a way."

"Also, The Tonight Club was visited by the tax bureau for inspection early in the morning, which means they can't attend today either,"

Yves Quill said worriedly.

Dirk Carter was stunned again.

Turning his head, he saw Bjorn Dixon and Wilbur Holloway walking towards him.

Dirk Carter said to Yves Quill, "Alright, I know. You go about your business."

Once Yves Quill left.

The two arrived in front of him.

Wilbur Holloway said proudly, "Deputy Magistrate Carter didn't sleep well last night, did you? You look a bit worn out. Oh, did you encounter any difficulties in fundraising?"

"Difficulties, naturally, exist, but they're not insurmountable. It's okay, nothing major,"

Dirk Carter said indifferently.

"Hahaha... Brother Carter is indeed magnanimous, admirable, admirable,"

Wilbur Holloway laughed out loud.

At this moment, Bjorn Dixon said, "Comrade Dirk Carter, I heard that you have a good relationship with the Verdant Group's young lady?"

"Not exactly good, just acquaintances, I suppose,"

Dirk Carter replied.

Bjorn Dixon smiled proudly and said, "Comrade Dirk Carter is modest. With connections like Verdant Group, even a hundred Deputy Holloways are no match. Why haven't we seen Miss Zechariah?"

While saying this, he deliberately glanced around.

Dirk Carter understood his intentions.

Just probing, that's all.

He smiled and said, "No worries, County Mayor Dixon, I didn't notify Verdant Group for this donation."

Hearing such words, both men were overjoyed.

Just about to say something...

Delano suddenly ran over and said to both men, "Guests have arrived."

Wilbur Holloway, with an arrogant face, said, "Deputy Magistrate Carter, I won't accompany you in the chat, I'll go greet my guests."

"Please go ahead, Deputy Holloway,"

Dirk Carter said, and Wilbur Holloway hurried off to the entrance, where a row of luxury cars had stopped, and a group of elegantly dressed businessmen walked over.

Looking around.

There were at least thirty or forty people.

Such a large-scale donation was quite eye-catching in the entire Kenton County.

In the distance, Wilbur Holloway led the people, chatting as they walked over, while Caden Dixon was so anxious he could hardly stand still, sidling up to Dirk Carter, whispering, "Where are your people? Not a single one has arrived?"

"There were supposed to be two, but they were intercepted,"

Dirk Carter said bitterly.

Caden Dixon heard this, his eyes widened, and he said with considerable resentment, "See, I knew things weren't that simple. I told you not to compete, but you didn't listen."

Dirk Carter chuckled and said, "What if there's a turning point?"

A turning point? What turning point could there be?

Caden Dixon let out a long sigh. At this point, they could only rely on fate.

By 10:30.

The donation preparations were complete.

The situation was clear-cut.

On Dirk Carter's side of the donation box, there was no one, while Wilbur Holloway's side was packed with people.

They were all prominent figures in Kenton County.

For them, taking advantage of this donation opportunity to connect with the county government was a no-brainer.

"Deputy Magistrate Carter, your people haven't arrived yet? You see, it's already 10:30, just waiting around is pointless,"

Bjorn Dixon said sarcastically.

Wilbur Holloway immediately chimed in, "Exactly, Deputy Magistrate Carter, you don't have a single person. Are you waiting for the God of Wealth to rain money on you?"

"Hahaha..."

This remark made some people burst into laughter.

It seemed to most people that in today's "contest," Dirk Carter had already lost.

If champagne were present, Wilbur Holloway would probably have been impatient to pop it in celebration.

Dirk Carter, however, maintained a nonchalant attitude.

Waving his hand, he said, "Why not go ahead with the donation ceremony? We can't delay everyone's enthusiasm for charity..."
