A Bumpy Road to Power

Chapter 35: Show of Force

Dirk Carter's mode of transportation was a scooter that had seen better days.

He bought it at a second-hand market when he started working at the health bureau.

Wyvern Mountain saved Sierra Vincent.

That scooter disappeared without a trace.

And now, this one in front of him, worth nearly fifty thousand, was undoubtedly sent by Sierra Vincent.

What does this mean? All debts settled?

If it were sent by someone else, Dirk might not dare to accept it, but coming from Sierra Vincent, the situation was different.

Around eight-thirty in the morning, Dirk rode his beloved little scooter to the courtyard of the Work Safety Administration.

The Stillwater County Work Safety Administration was located at the end of Government Road, about 3 kilometers from the county committee and government offices.

It was a small building with only four floors.

In front of the building was a modest-sized courtyard.

Arriving at the main entrance, Dirk found that it was almost nine o'clock, yet the Work Safety Administration was still closed, leaving only a small side door for passage.

He originally wanted to ask the gatekeeper what was going on.

Then he found that an elderly man in the gatehouse was snoring away on a reclining chair.

Could it be that he was late?

Impossible, wasn't the working hour set at nine?

With this puzzlement.

Dirk walked into the courtyard.

He realized he hadn't come late; rather, no one else had arrived yet.

The main doors of the building were also shut tightly.

Peering through the window, he saw a quiet corridor with no one in sight.

With this confusion,

Dirk wandered around to the back door of the building.

He discovered that the back door was not locked.

Since no one was here yet, he decided to check out his office first.

Unfamiliar with the surroundings, Dirk took cautious steps, peering into each office one by one.

He didn't find anything on the first two floors.

So it must be on the third floor.

Just as Dirk reached the third-floor corridor, he heard some rustling noises from the end of the corridor.

Someone?

Feeling a bit cheerful, he was just about to walk over and take a look.

Right at that moment, a small door beside him suddenly opened.

A hand reached out and grabbed his arm.

Damn it, is someone trying to scare me to death?

Dirk was just about to exclaim when a pretty face appeared, raising a finger to his lips signifying "shh".

It was a woman.

A young woman.

Wearing a baseball cap pulled low to cover most of her face.

Even so,

Dirk could still see her delicate and charming face.

Her long eyelashes fluttered with her eyes, hinting at anxiety, yet unable to mask the clear and lively glint within.

Before Dirk could react, the girl pulled him into the room.

Then, the door was gently closed.

"Shh!"

The woman gestured for silence again.

Then she pressed her ear against the door as if eavesdropping on the sounds outside.

Only now did Dirk notice that the woman was dressed in a full set of outdoor gear, with sneakers on her feet, a high coat collar concealing her neck.

A small backpack was slung over her back, contents unknown.

It was a storage room.

Filled with all sorts of items.

The woman alone had enough room, but once Dirk entered, it felt cramped.

"Which media outlet are you from?"

Once certain nobody was outside the door, the woman turned to ask Dirk.

Big eyes, long lashes.

And a doll-like face with prominent features made Dirk a bit dazed.

"Uh... Well..."

Dirk hadn't figured out how to respond.

The woman, seeming to have a sudden realization, said, "Oh, you need to keep it confidential, right? No worries, we're colleagues, let me introduce myself, Ardmore Evening News intern reporter Cyan Brooks."

"Dirk Carter."

Dirk mimicked her introduction.

"Are you here for undercover journalism too?"

Cyan Brooks asked with an innocent expression.

"Uh... Well..."

Dirk hesitated for a moment.

Cyan giggled and said, "It's okay if you don't want to say, but let me specify that I was here first; the first-hand data belongs to me."

"Oh." Dirk nodded.

Cyan saw Dirk agree.

She was very pleased.

Again, she pressed her ear against the door to listen carefully before saying, "Those two just went in; once they leave, we'll sneak in, you keep watch while I take photos, how about it?"

"Uh... Well..."

"Uh-uh-uh, is that all you can say? I'll just assume you're agreeing."

Cyan made the decision herself.

Dirk was perplexed.

After some thought, he asked, "Why is no one working at the Work Safety Administration today?"

Cyan smugly replied, "Looks like you're clueless, huh? Heh, unlike you, I did detailed homework."

"Then tell me, why is no one working at the Work Safety Administration today? It's neither weekend nor a holiday."

"I can tell you, but as always, the first-hand data belongs to me, alright?"

"Alright!"

Dirk agreed enthusiastically.

Cyan's face brightened with happiness.

She said, "Today indeed is not a weekend, Deputy Director Adair Meyer gave everyone the day off."

"A day off? Why?"

Dirk asked in surprise.

No one had informed him of today's sudden holiday before he arrived.

Cyan pursed her lips and said, "Why else? To show the new deputy director a little gesture."

New deputy director?

That was himself, wasn't it?

Dirk and Adair Meyer had never interacted, let alone had any grievances, why would he show hostility?

Seeing Dirk puzzled.

Cyan chuckled and asked cheekily, "Don't you know the inside story here?"

"No idea!"

Dirk feigned cluelessness by shaking his head.

Cyan animatedly said, "Inside information is that, when the position of deputy director of the Work Safety Administration became vacant, Adair Meyer initially intended for Gilroy Thompson, the head of the General Safety Supervision Department, to take up the deputy director's position, therefore spending a lot of time networking up and down, but unexpectedly the county parachuted a deputy director down, which made Adair Meyer very unhappy..."

"So, today he gave everyone the day off because I... our Work Safety Administration's new deputy director takes office today, the purpose is to make him have a rough start, right?" Dirk asked.

Cyan gave Dirk a playful punch on the chest and said, "You sneaky boy, quite smart, huh?"

Dirk was speechless.

He originally planned to get along well with Adair Meyer, and now he hadn't officially reported yet, but Adair already had issues with him.

Suddenly remembered what Fordham Wright had said to him before.

The organization department initially preferred internally selecting the deputy director, looks like his parachuting down indeed blocked some people's way, how could they be happy?

"Then what are you here at the Work Safety Administration for?"

Dirk asked.

Cyan continued to listen at the door, waving her hand and said, "Same as you."

"I want to know if we're targeting the same matter." Dirk feigned mystery.

Believing she had stumbled onto an unexpected yield, Cyan lit up with excitement.

She said, "Then let me go first, I'm here for Brigham Langdon."
