A Bumpy Road to Power

Chapter 56: A Tough Man's Gentle Heart

Dirk Carter's gaze, however, was on the two women standing to one side.

He said, "I can tell you, but first, I want them to introduce themselves to me."

Caleb Ford heard this.

He paused for a moment.

Returned to his seat and said, "You two, introduce yourselves."

The two people from earlier still acted indifferently towards Dirk Carter, with a cold demeanor.

But now, hearing Caleb Ford's command,

They had no choice.

"You go first!"

Dirk Carter gestured with his hand to the first woman.

Although the woman looked disdainful,

She had no choice but to step forward and say, "My name is Ewan Forrest."

"My name is Rose Forrest."

The woman behind her continued.

"Ewan Forrest, Rose Forrest, together they form Rose, the famous Rose Twins around President Ford, truly living up to their reputation."

Dirk Carter remarked.

"Enough nonsense, just say how you found out?"

Caleb Ford said impatiently.

Dirk Carter chuckled and said, "President Ford, how I found out doesn't seem important. What's important is that I can cure her, right?"

Caleb Ford wanted to get angry.

But after thinking about it, he agreed Dirk Carter's words made sense.

He asked, "Can you really cure her?"

"Absolutely."

"Alright, then I'll let you try. If you can't cure her, leave a finger behind before you go. No! Two fingers, one from each hand."

Caleb Ford said fiercely.

Dirk Carter asked, "And if I do cure her?"

"If you really can cure her, I'll grant you three wishes, whatever you want, I'll give it to you."

"Alright, lead the way then."

Dirk Carter said, standing up.

"Brother Ford, don't trust him, he doesn't look like a good person at all."

Seeing Caleb Ford agree,

Ewan Forrest quickly said.

Rose Forrest chimed in, "Yeah, he's a real scumbag."

"Ladies, and how am I not a good person? How am I a scumbag?"

"You..."

This question stumped Ewan Forrest, unsure of how to articulate it, she couldn't very well say it was because he touched her bottom just now.

Caleb Ford didn't mind and walked straight to the wall in the office. With a gentle push, a hidden door, seemingly without any gaps, was revealed.

"Come on in, Rose, you two guard the door."

With Caleb Ford's command, the two could only stomp their feet in frustration as they left.

Dirk Carter walked through the hidden door, where he entered a bedroom.

An elegantly decorated bedroom.

Amidst it was a bed.

A woman lay upon the bed.

Though appearing to be in her forties, the woman had an ordinary look, devoid of any color on her lips or face, appearing quite frail.

The woman before him was Cindy Yates.

Few people knew she existed.

Dirk Carter's knowledge came from Dylan Tate's notebook.

Caleb Ford, now in his early forties,

had made a name for himself in Stillwater in his thirties.

Lacking neither power nor wealth, yet no woman had ever appeared by his side.

The rumor was that Caleb Ford wasn't interested in women.

Dirk Carter, upon hearing such rumors in the past, also believed them.

Until he uncovered the truth in Dylan Tate's notebook.

Caleb Ford did have a woman.

That woman was Cindy Yates before him.

Cindy Yates was Caleb Ford's first love.

They were from the same village,

a pairing often deemed childhood sweethearts, growing fond of one another without suspicion.

They had been close since a young age and even pledged eternal love to each other.

Upon reaching adulthood,

Caleb Ford sought Cindy Yates's parents to ask for her hand in marriage.

But he was driven out by them.

The reason being Caleb Ford's family's poverty; they couldn't allow their daughter to marry an unambitious bricklayer.

As another romance seemed destined for doom, leaving Caleb Ford disheartened, while standing at a crossroad ready to head for work elsewhere, Cindy Yates appeared.

She had her bags packed, determined to elope with him.

And just like that, they arrived in the city together.

For a time, they lived from hand to mouth.

If not for Cindy Yates's subsequent misfortune, Caleb Ford might have remained a diligent bricklayer, untouched by fate's twisting gears.

Despite their hard labor at a construction site,

they found joy in their love amidst adversity.

One a bricklayer, the other unskilled labor; they sought delight amidst hardships.

Yet, who would've thought fate had another unexpected turn in store?

On a day like any other, just arriving at the site,

a brick fell from the sky.

Aimed at Caleb Ford, Cindy Yates, walking behind, swiftly pushed him aside, taking the hit herself on the head.

She was knocked out cold on the spot.

Though she survived and regained consciousness, the doctors informed them that the severe injury affected her brain's central nervous system. From then on, Cindy Yates could only remain bedridden.

Cindy Yates became paralyzed.

She lost sensation below her neck and couldn't speak anymore.

After this major incident occurred,

the construction site not only refused responsibility but expelled both of them.

Facing such pressure,

Caleb Ford decided to grit his teeth and forge ahead.

Thus, Apex Group came to be.

Despite earning vast wealth and seeking out many doctors, Cindy Yates's condition remained unchanged.

Caleb Ford, a man of loyalty and honor, remained untouched by temptation, even though his wife lay bedridden and countless women surrounded him in later years.

Dirk Carter gently took Cindy Yates's hand from the covers, carefully checking her pulse.

This man, feared by all,

showed immense tenderness in Cindy Yates's presence.

He asked Dirk Carter, "Is there hope?"

Dirk Carter straightened up,

exhaled deeply, and said, "For others, no, but for me, yes!"

"Really?"

As if hearing an earth-shattering piece of good news, Caleb Ford became excited.

Dirk Carter nodded, saying, "Let's begin treatment right away. Help her sit up."

Hearing this, Caleb Ford,

climbed onto the bed without hesitation,

carefully propping Cindy Yates up.

Since her body couldn't stand on its own, Caleb Ford supported her back and neck, speaking gently as he did so.

Dirk Carter opened the needle pouch he carried with him.

He took out the silver needles and began to insert them one by one into Cindy Yates's head.

Within half an hour or so, Cindy Yates's head was covered with silver needles.

Then,

Dirk Carter moved behind her,

and with force, slapped her back.

Cindy Yates's body tilted forward, she heaved, and a mouthful of black blood spewed out.

"What happened to her?"

Caleb Ford asked worriedly.

Dirk Carter replied, "It's nothing, the congested blood was pressuring the nerves. Spitting it out is a good sign."

After speaking,

he skillfully removed the silver needles from Cindy Yates's head.

Lay Cindy Yates back down.

Caleb Ford saw that she remained motionless.

He turned suddenly, looking at Dirk Carter, and asked, "Are you messing with me? She's still the same."

"I told you he's a fraud. Brother Ford, turn him over to us. We'll make sure he wishes he could die."

At this moment, Ewan Forrest and Rose Forrest stormed in, each grabbing Dirk Carter's shoulders from either side.
