War, Blood, Greed and Nuclear Blast

Chapter 45: Crimson Hail

It was a cold night, and the prisoners exhaled frosty breaths as they glanced at each other.

No one said anything, as silence had reigned in the prison for some time. Everyone was ready to leave the courtyard as soon as the order came.

Kreyn stood on top of the roof with Groza and Daren. For almost half an hour, they had been looking north, waiting for their enemies.

"Are you sure they're coming?" Groza turned to him. "They don't necessarily have to be close. We would see their torches from a long distance."

"Nah..." Kreyn bit his lip. "They'll definitely come. Unfortunately, our enemies are smart. They won't show themselves until they're close. Therefore, we must watch carefully. Every second is important to us."

At the same time, Azura approached Laura, who couldn't figure out her feelings. What was happening around her was not what she wanted, either for herself or for her family.

"You understand what's going to happen now, right?" Azura stared at her with her cold eyes.

Laura nodded.

"You're trying to survive, I get it, but still... I can't believe it's come to this."

Azura put her hand on her shoulder. "You can stay here. Your family will save you, and you'll return to your old life, or you can come with us and win. The winner gets everything, including freedom."

In fact, Laura would be their hostage regardless of her decision. For Kreyn's plan, it was better if she did everything voluntarily, so that was the only reason Azura was talking to her.

She didn't care about the privileged nobles who complained about how hard their lives were. It made her sick.

At the same moment, a faint flame reflected in Kreyn's alert eyes. It was a small spark, followed by a torch, then another, and another.

Without hesitation, Kreyn turned and jumped off the roof.

Clap!

He clapped his hands as the sound echoed through the prison, loud enough for every prisoner to hear, but not loud enough for the Wurhen Family to suspect anything. They were too far away.

Quickly and quietly, everyone exited through the gate, heading straight for the western bridge.

No one spoke or lit torches. They couldn't let the Wurhen Family notice them.

As they approached the river, Kreyn turned as lights in the distance reached the field.

"Holy shit..." one of the prisoners muttered.

His friend shuddered as he looked at the countless figures, the hundreds of guards following their leaders who would soon unleash their full power on the prison and its prisoners. Well, at least that's what they thought.

"Ghm." Grender coughed. "I won't hide it. Leaving the prison was a smart decision, but why let them capture it so easily? Maybe we should have left a trap?"

In response, Kreyn smirked as he leaned toward the ground.

"Who said there's no trap?"

"Agh?"

Tap. Tap. Tap.

Kreyn tapped the ground several times.

"Now, it's time."

Tremble. Tremble. Tremble.

The ground shook as if in a powerful earthquake, the tremors spreading further, straight towards the prison.

At the same moment, six shadows burst out of the ground, right in front of the Wurhen Family squad.

The prisoners' eyes widened, their gazes fixed on a single point as they couldn't believe what they were seeing.

The guards who were too close immediately found themselves in the jaws of the worms. Hundreds of teeth turned them into a bloody mess, instilling fear in the rest.

"Hah... Hahha! The Arakta Worms, they're on our side!" someone exclaimed.

"Hell yeah! With these monsters, we'll win easily!"

Optimism was a great thing for boosting morale, but fortunately or unfortunately, Kreyn was a realist.

Whoooooooosh.

Wind blades and beams of light flew out from the vanguard line, mercilessly striking the Arakta Worms.

Even such great creatures were not invulnerable. Blood gushed from their deep wounds, and it was only a matter of time before the Origins destroyed them.

Dozens of guards will die, but the Origins will survive and advance.

However…

"Vaarh didn't like the idea, but I managed to persuade him. Now, you'll see why my lips are fucking burned!"

Crack.

The seventh Arakta Worm appeared behind the squad, but its goal was not to attack, but to do something else.

It bent at a strange angle, straining all its muscles to make a leap forward, to fly right over the troops.

No one understood what this worm was doing, no one except Kreyn, until the monster opened its jaws.

A red light appeared, and several orbs peeked out of a large bag.

"Wait... You are!" Groza exclaimed as hundreds of crimson grenades rained down on the Wurhen Family troops.

A blue barrier reminiscent of Liam's abilities covered some of the guards, but it was hardly enough...

Blast! Blast! Blast!

One explosion after another, the crimson grenades detonated, covering the field in wild flames. There were so many grenades that for a moment it seemed as if a rapidly changing crimson constellation was dancing above the troops.

The seventh Arakta Worms disappeared near the Cinder Swamps as the surviving worms hurried to leave as well. Still, three of the seven remained on the battlefield. They had suffered too serious injuries to move on.

With a satisfied smirk, Kreyn watched as the flames engulfed the field, and that was just one of the surprises he had in store for the Wurhen Family.

"Damn, you're a fucking lunatic!" Judith exclaimed in disbelief. "You used a worm to lay out bombs? But why?"

Kreyn glanced at her.

"Hah, what do you mean? I mean, I had an idea to attach grenades to arrows and shoot them from above, but guess what? We don't have any bows or fucking archers!"

Daren shook his head. "And you're using a giant worm as a bomb delivery system? I think that's a few steps more messed up than archers."

"Well." Kreyn spread his arms wide. "You have to do what you have to do. Besides, that's not all!"

Kreyn planned to reach Varthon when the town was at its weakest. It was easy to do via the eastern river, but... the bridge had been destroyed the day before on his orders.

Tremble! Tremble! Tremble!

The water trembled as it spilled over the edges when three backs of the Arakta Worms appeared in the middle of the river. They pressed against each other and curved into a solid bridge.

It was a little creepy, but the main thing was that it worked.

"Alright! I hope you like this bridge!" Kreyn exclaimed before taking his first step.
