Chapter 357: Chapter 357: Veridia Town
Nina Jacobs named the cat Lexy.
For the rest of the journey, Lexy got along well with the two of them.
Whenever they encountered zombies blocking the road, Lexy would stand watch on the roof of the car, its expression alert as it surveyed the surroundings.
Seeing Nina Jacobs and Wayne Warner kill all the zombies, it would relax and jump back inside the car.
"Where did you come from, anyway? What about your previous owner?"
Nina Jacobs asked, looking at the now-quiet Lexy.
No wonder it had managed to survive in this apocalypse; it was incredibly alert to zombies.
But Lexy, like Wayne Warner, only ever gave her a one-word reply.
Nina Jacobs smiled. She had long grown accustomed to this unspoken, comfortable silence on the road.
As evening approached, the number of zombies on the road gradually began to increase again.
Nina Jacobs checked the map. There should be a small town ahead.
These zombies must have come from that town. 𝘧𝓇𝑒𝑒𝑤ℯ𝑏𝓃𝘰𝑣ℯ𝘭.𝘤ℴ𝘮

The system’s Free-For-All mission had refreshed again.
Nina Jacobs couldn’t help but be surprised. ’There are still supplies in a food factory at a time like this?’
That was a rare find.
However, she quickly noticed something strange—there were lights up ahead.
’Veridia Town?’
The sky had already darkened, but from a distance, the town looked as if it were brightly lit.
For a moment, Nina Jacobs even thought her eyes were playing tricks on her.
’How could a town like this exist here, at a time like this?’
’Could it be that it had solar power from before the apocalypse?’
’Of course, it could also be a trap.’
Nina Jacobs stopped the car.
In the beam of the headlights, a sign on the side of the road was revealed, with large red letters proclaiming:
TRAP! BEWARE!!
"A trap?"
The road ahead looked perfectly normal.
But a sign like this wouldn’t be here for no reason.
Nina Jacobs activated her Five Senses Enhancement and, sure enough, she heard the low growls of zombies nearby.
’Are Mutated Zombies lying in ambush?’
The sound was coming from beneath the road surface ahead.
Nina Jacobs opened the car window, and several Diamond Sand Spikes shot forward along the ground!
BANG! BANG! BANG!
The Diamond Sand Spikes pierced right through a section of the road, which shattered with a loud crash!
ROAR!
A figure leaped out from the ground, and several Stone Spikes shot toward the SUV.
A Diamond Sand Cover materialized in front of Wayne Warner, blocking the Stone Spike attack. Seeing its prey before it, the Mutated Zombie roared and charged.
Seeing Lexy pressed against the windshield, staring nervously out the window as if ready to jump into the fray at any moment, Nina Jacobs couldn’t help but say:
"Don’t worry, he can handle it."
Three minutes later, Wayne Warner kicked the Earth Element Zombie’s corpse several meters away.
Only then did Nina Jacobs get out of the car, followed by Lexy, its tail held high.
This section of the road was damaged to varying degrees, the worst of which was a crater up ahead, created by an explosion.
The crater was concealed by a thin crust of earth. If not for the warning sign, her SUV would have likely plunged right into it.
Using her Earth Element Superpower to fill the crater and cover it with a layer of stone slabs, Nina Jacobs finally drove toward Veridia Town.
The national highway led directly to Veridia Town’s main road.
The town was like a ghost town, with only a few scattered zombies wandering about.
The streetlights on both sides of the road were on, their pale, ghastly light illuminating the ravaged streets, creating a particularly eerie scene.
Nina Jacobs noticed many zombie corpses by the roadside. The area had clearly been cleared out by someone.
’Are there other people here?’
The road ahead became impassable by car, so the two of them and the cat got out.
On the debris-strewn road, a small puddle had formed in the only passable spot.
Nina Jacobs grabbed Wayne Warner’s arm. Lexy was perched on his shoulder.
"Something’s strange about that spot."
’We’re in a perennially arid region. Why would a puddle suddenly appear for no reason?’
’Either a Water Element Superpower User left it behind during a previous fight, or it’s a trap.’
Isabella Ramsey’s diary mentioned that there were no Water Element Superpower Users left in all of Keldorn, including the surrounding areas.
So Nina Jacobs was leaning toward the latter.
Just then, a flickering beam of light shone down from a building to their upper right.
The light danced wildly on the ground, as if trying to get their attention.
Nina Jacobs turned her head and saw that there was someone in the building.
A woman was waving a flashlight back and forth and gesturing for her to stop moving forward.
’Is she warning us?’
Nina Jacobs had no idea why someone would be here. The person even lowered a long metal ladder.
It was a nine-story building, and the woman was standing at a window on the third floor.
After a moment’s thought, she walked over to the metal ladder.
After Nina Jacobs climbed up, the other person visibly relaxed with a sigh of relief.
"That’s a trap left by a Dual Element Mutated Zombie,
If you had walked over it, you would’ve been electrocuted, and it would have come for you immediately!"
The woman’s name was Cordelia. She was in her twenties, and though her face was smudged with dirt, her eyes were bright.
"Water and Thunder Element?"
Seeing the other woman nod, Nina Jacobs understood.
’The lights are probably also a trap set by this Thunder Element zombie.’
"How on earth did you get here?"
There was a man next to Cordelia.
He carried a long blade on his back and gave off a strange smell.
It was the smell of someone who hadn’t bathed in a long time, but Nina Jacobs didn’t mind. This was the apocalypse, after all.
"The warning sign on the national highway, did you make that too?" Nina Jacobs asked.
"Rhonda set that up... She’d be happy to know it helped you. Did you come from the direction of Veridia?"
For some reason, Nina Jacobs sensed a trace of sadness in Cordelia’s voice as she said this.
"Let’s go up first. We don’t want those things to spot us,"
the man said.
But when the two of them got a clear look at Lexy on Wayne Warner’s shoulder, Cordelia exclaimed in surprise:
"A Chinese mountain cat? That’s a Chinese mountain cat, isn’t it!"
"A Chinese mountain cat?"
Nina Jacobs explained that she had found Lexy on the road.
"It is. Chinese mountain cats are native only to Drakonia. They’re very intelligent,"
the man said, looking at Lexy.
Just then, Lexy let out a big yawn from its perch on Wayne Warner’s shoulder.
"No wonder. It helped me kill a few zombie field mice,"
Nina Jacobs said as she followed behind them.
When the four of them reached the top floor, Nina Jacobs smelled a strange, foul odor.
Inside the room were two more men and another woman. They seemed to be injured, and the smell was coming from their wounds.
"Please don’t mind them. The room across the hall is clean. You can make do there for the night,"
Cordelia said.
"What happened to them...?" Nina Jacobs asked, curious as to why these people were here.
"We’re from Lornwood Base. We came here looking for water. My name is Reginald Sutton,"
the man with the long blade introduced himself.
"Unfortunately, we didn’t find much water, and we ended up with dead and wounded,
We can’t leave this place until they’ve recovered from their injuries,"
Cordelia added.
The entire region of Keldorn was short on water.
And the surrounding areas had also become extremely arid.
Nina Jacobs noticed that the injured people didn’t look well.
Their wounds were festering, which explained the smell she’d noticed upon entering.
"We have no water and no medicine. To cover the scent of blood, they smeared mud on their wounds...
And then... then they got infected..."
Cordelia grew more and more distressed as she spoke, and Reginald Sutton, standing beside her, silently patted her shoulder.
