Chapter 366: Chapter 366: Inquiring
’That simple?’
The group was a little surprised.
"Our dormitories here are separated by gender. The women mostly live in that tower over there. Someone will take the three of you there in a bit."
"As for you men, you can come rest with us."
Virgil Ulrich continued.
But he quickly noticed that one of the tall men was sticking close to the woman holding the cat.
Never leaving her side.
"Ahem, we do have couples, of course. Let’s see... Marcellus, you take them."
When Marcellus heard his name called, he quickly nodded in agreement.
"..."
Nina Jacobs knew the man had misunderstood.
But it was more convenient to have Wayne Warner with her, so she didn’t mind.
Cordelia and Rhonda Rowan went with them as well.
"This place seems pretty well-managed. Do zombies really not get in?"
Nina Jacobs asked curiously as they walked.
’Men and women living separately... Maybe this place isn’t what we thought it was.’
Marcellus sighed. "Of course there are zombies. They come every night. Last month, a huge wave came through, and we lost a lot of Superpower Users. But there’s nothing we can do. It’s better than dying of thirst back at the base."
"Are there any other dangers besides zombies?"
Nina Jacobs asked.
She wanted to probe for information about the group they had fought with two days ago.
"There are zombie animals, too, but as long as they aren’t Zombie Rats, we can handle them. Oh, right, there’s also a group over at Griston, not far from here. They’re probably stronger than us and are always trying to steal our stuff."
Marcellus answered, a hint of anger in his voice.
Nina Jacobs and Cordelia exchanged a look. Cordelia asked in a sympathetic tone,
"That sounds awful. Are they trying to steal supplies?"
’Or women? Crystal Cores?’
"It’s much more serious than that. We only have one Water Element Superpower User here. Those people don’t try to steal supplies or anything else—they just want to take our Water Element Superpower User."
Marcellus replied.
"Take your Water Element Superpower User?"
Nina Jacobs hadn’t expected that answer.
’Is The Aegis Conclave also short on water?’
"You bet. The only reason everyone’s gathered here is that we don’t lack water. It’s what keeps us alive."
Marcellus added that a person could overcome almost anything, but a lack of water was insurmountable.
After showing them the way, Marcellus left.
Just before he left, however, he took another long look at Lexy in Nina Jacobs’s arms.
.bg-ssp-10081{margin-left:auto;margin-right:auto;display:flex;justify-content:center;}"Do you think we’ve come to the wrong place?"
Cordelia asked doubtfully, standing inside Nina Jacobs and Wayne Warner’s "couple’s room."
’These people don’t seem to be with Ethan Cole’s group.’
After being brought here, they had complete freedom and hadn’t been harassed by anyone.
"Let’s find someone and ask about the situation first."
Nina Jacobs told Wayne Warner and Lexy to stay put. The rooms inside the tower were partitioned off with wooden planks or cabinets.
The so-called couple’s room was just a slightly larger space cordoned off by a few wooden planks in the farthest corner.
It seemed designed to give them as much privacy as possible.
After giving Wayne Warner a few instructions, Nina Jacobs went with Cordelia to the "women’s dorm" on the floor below.
However, the women’s dorm was almost empty, with most of the rooms vacant.
Even though some bunks had personal belongings, it looked like their occupants were out.
"Maybe yesterday was just a misunderstanding. Those people might not be so bad after all."
Rhonda Rowan finally spoke up.
But her words left Cordelia at a loss for how to respond.
’They were about to bring a blade down on our heads, and they’re not bad people?’
"Rhonda, didn’t I tell you before? They..."
Cordelia was cut off by a surprised voice.
"Cordelia? Is that really you?!"
At first, Annie Stone thought her eyes were playing tricks on her.
She never dreamed that Cordelia would come here.
"Annie?!"
Cordelia was even more stunned.
Seeing Annie Stone standing right in front of her, safe and sound, all Cordelia wanted to do was burst into tears.
"I thought... I thought you..."
Cordelia took Annie Stone’s hands, looking her up and down to see if she’d been mistreated.
"Annie Stone, you’re alive! What about the others? They’re alive too, right?"
Rhonda Rowan rushed forward, a hopeful smile on her face as she sought confirmation.
But the smile on Annie Stone’s face froze.
She walked to a nearby window and looked outside as she answered, "Everyone’s dead. Only Aeliana and I are still alive. If it weren’t for Captain Wren here, Aeliana and I would have..."
As she spoke, she covered her face and began to cry.
Hearing this, Rhonda Rowan stumbled back a few steps, her face filled with disbelief.
"What on earth happened? When we got separated, there were still fifty or sixty of you. How could this happen?"
Cordelia quickly asked.
"We searched all over Keldorn, looking for a water source for days, but we found nothing. Later, we ran into a group on the road who said they could lead us to water, and we believed them..."
"But that night, we ran into a zombie horde. To get away, those people decided to use our group as bait. I don’t know what they said to Corin, but he actually listened to them."
Annie Stone wailed as she spoke.
"...That night, everyone... everyone died there."
"That can’t be right. Corin isn’t that kind of person."
Rhonda Rowan murmured, still seemingly unwilling to believe Annie Stone’s words.
"He is! He just wanted to bring the water source back all by himself and be the big hero! He didn’t care whether we lived or died!"
Annie Stone roared in fury.
"When were you brought here?"
Nina Jacobs asked.
Annie Stone wiped the tears from her face and answered, "About five days ago. But Aeliana and I were locked in the trunk of a car for two whole days. Later, Captain Wren found us, and when he learned what they’d done, he flew into a rage and drove them out."
Annie Stone’s words made the whole sequence of events clear.
Once she had calmed down, Cordelia told her about their encounter with Corin and why they had come here.
"Good! That’s just great! Corin is dead, HAHAHA! Aeliana will be so happy when she finds out."
After the initial shock, Annie Stone felt a sense of catharsis.
"He never could have imagined his own fate when he tricked us all into being bait. You reap what you sow. He deserved it!"
"Yes, he did deserve it,"
Nina Jacobs said calmly.
Rhonda Rowan, however, still looked unable to accept it and ran off by herself.
This time, Cordelia didn’t chase after her.
"So the reason this place is short-handed now is that Captain Wren drove Ethan Cole’s group away?"
Nina Jacobs asked.
Annie Stone shook her head. "Not entirely. A group came the other day, and they had a pretty intense fight."
"How strong was the other side?" Nina Jacobs asked.
"They didn’t have many people, only about ten or so, but Captain Wren suspects they have other strongholds. Oh, right. Captain Wren also suspects they’re from the Valley."
With the topic changed, Annie Stone quickly calmed down.
"The Valley? Isn’t the Valley completely overrun with zombies? There are still living people there?"
Cordelia asked, confused.
"That’s just what I heard from Captain Wren. When a large number of zombies were led into the Valley, there were still quite a few survivors inside. Some of those survivors escaped, and they say they’re planning to get revenge."
Annie Stone replied.
