Chapter 373: Chapter 373: Taking the Road with the Most Zombies
The roads in the apocalypse were always unpredictable.
The few cars at the front of the convoy stopped because rubble was blocking their path.
Tristan Lynch had no choice but to have people get out and clear the obstacles.
Just then, someone shrieked in terror, "Zombie Rats! There are Zombie Rats on that road!"
’Zombie Rats?’
Everyone was shocked to hear this.
Tristan Lynch didn’t dare get out of the car. He looked toward the road ahead from the rooftop hatch and, sure enough, saw a few Zombie Rats scurrying across the dusty surface.
There was no telling how many more were hidden in the cloud of dust behind them.
Zombie Rats usually appeared in swarms and could easily slip into vehicles through gaps in the chassis. Tristan Lynch immediately ordered the rear vehicles to turn around.
"Detour, detour!
Take the other road!"
Tristan Lynch’s command came over the walkie-talkie.
"Miss Zephyra, we’ve spotted Zombie Rats ahead. We may have to change our original route."
Corisande said, pressing the intercom button on the walkie-talkie.
Nina Jacobs picked up the walkie-talkie and replied, "Alright, let’s take the detour."
If one didn’t look closely, the rolling dust could easily be mistaken for an approaching swarm of Zombie Rats.
Even Cordelia and the others thought so.
In reality, she had only secretly released six Little Zombie Rats from under the vehicle.
"If something happens in a bit, stay in the vehicle."
Nina Jacobs said, watching the vehicles behind them turn around quickly.
The other road was the one with the most zombies.
Felix Finch had sat up. He leaned against the wall of the vehicle, holding the hardtack and water Cordelia had taken from her space.
He took large bites, even though the movement made the wounds on his face and body look even more grotesque.
Right now, he just wanted to recover his strength as quickly as possible.
"I didn’t expect there to be any survivors in a place like this."
Tobin said, looking at a map. The place Felix Finch mentioned was near an oil storage center that had experienced a massive explosion.
He remembered it had suffered a series of chain-reaction explosions during the acid rain period, causing countless casualties nearby.
"That might be why there are fewer zombies."
Nina Jacobs, however, was rather interested in the area around these ruins.
Petroleum was also a raw material for various textiles and plastic products. The map showed several textile and plastic factories near the oil storage center.
Perhaps they could find some useful supplies there.
And these ruins were halfway along their path forward.
The problem now was how to manage their time and lure everyone to that vicinity.
"About how many survivors are left in the ruins?"
Nina Jacobs asked Felix Finch.
Felix Finch looked up and took a sip of water. "Over two hundred."
"That many?!"
Cordelia and the others were surprised.
"There used to be more. A lot starved, died of thirst, or were poisoned.
Most of them will do anything to survive."
Felix Finch frowned slightly. This was what he had been most worried about for the past few days.
"That area has a lot of fertilizer plants and chemical factories. The pollution should be severe, making it unsuitable for survival."
Tobin said.
"There are no suitable places to live. Everyone is just barely scraping by."
Felix Finch’s eyes dimmed.
’There are no suitable places to live.’
The group fell silent.
How could they not know? In Keldorn, there truly wasn’t a single place fit for survival.
"Everyone, hold on tight! The zombies are getting more numerous!"
Reginald Sutton said just then.
Nina Jacobs watched the stretch of road ahead gradually change color, her expression unreadable.
She had already reinforced the heavy-duty RV with Alloy Blocks. Although the system hadn’t provided many, it was enough to fortify the key areas.
"We can’t move forward! We’re surrounded by zombies!"
An urgent voice crackled over the walkie-talkie.
"I can’t believe there are so many zombies on this road!"
Tobin looked out the window. The road passed through a small town, and now zombies from both sides were swarming them.
Silas Crowley sat in his seat. A moment ago, he hadn’t understood why Nina Jacobs had said what she did.
But seeing the zombies outside, he instantly understood.
’Perhaps Nina Jacobs has traveled this road before. She knew there would be more zombies here.’
"Don’t worry, they’re not that fragile."
As soon as Nina Jacobs finished speaking, the sound of weapons blasting erupted outside.
Tristan Lynch’s men were actually using Jet Flame Guns.
Several men stood on the roofs of their vehicles, wielding Jet Guns and spraying wildly at the surrounding zombies.
Gun barrels also emerged from the armored cars, aiming at the zombies and opening fire.
"Their equipment really is comprehensive."
Reginald Sutton was a little worried about the RV’s safety. Many of the surrounding zombies had already started attacking the vehicle with their Superpowers.
But Tristan Lynch’s men showed no intention of providing support.
Nina Jacobs activated "Five Senses Enhancement" and could clearly hear what was happening inside the other vehicles.
"Those people still aren’t making a move. They don’t expect us to die for them, do they?" a man said.
"I thought Magnus York was hard to deal with, but this new one is even worse."
Nina Jacobs could tell it was the one called Lachlan complaining.
"Tristan, you can’t send us brothers to our deaths."
The vehicle was filled with a cacophony of voices. After giving a few commands over the walkie-talkie, Tristan Lynch’s tone changed as he said:
"Keldorn is a vast and remote place. Anything can happen here.
It wouldn’t be strange at all if a newcomer like her died here, would it?"
Earlier, Corisande had asked, "If she dies, doesn’t that mean our mission is a failure?"
"Failure? No such thing.
If they manage to survive, great.
If they die, you don’t say anything, I don’t say anything... who’s to know they were ever here?"
Tristan Lynch replied with a laugh.
Even if their superiors asked about it later, they could just say they never saw them.
"That’s true. Then we don’t have to put up with them anymore.
I don’t think they have any idea how hard it is to survive in Keldorn."
Before, Lachlan had been all smiles and flattery, but now he clearly had no regard for Zephyra and her group.
"Don’t say that. We still have to keep up appearances."
After speaking, Tristan Lynch immediately gestured for the others to be quiet. He then switched on the walkie-talkie’s intercom and asked in an anxious tone:
"Miss Zephyra, are you alright?
There are just too many zombies here! We... we can’t even get out to help!"
There was no answer from the other end of the walkie-talkie.
Just as they were all starting to wonder if something had happened to the vehicle behind them, Zephyra’s cool voice replied, "We’re fine."
Nina Jacobs disconnected the intercom line.
’Tristan Lynch and his men probably don’t know that this isn’t even the area with the most zombies.’
Sure enough, a few minutes later, the men who were still chatting in their vehicle noticed something was wrong.
The people they had spent a fortune hiring—over ten of them had died in a matter of minutes?!
These were Superpower Users they had painstakingly selected over the past two months.
And they had been protected by armed men.
"Mutated Zombies! They’re all Mutated Zombies!"
"Those zombies are too strong! They dodged the rocket launchers!"
"We’re surrounded from behind too! We can’t retreat now!"
"..."
Cries for help erupted from every vehicle.
The heavy-duty RV was also being battered, producing loud THUDS.
Even Felix Finch, who was leaning in the corner, frowned.
He was a Spiritual Element Superpower User; even without looking, he knew what was happening outside.
"The zombies are appearing too quickly. There are still over a thousand of them around."
Felix Finch warned.
"It’s fine."
But Nina Jacobs replied, not in the least bit anxious.
