Chapter 393: Chapter 393: Letter of Introduction
Claire Warner remained silent, but with a wave of her hand, she retrieved water containers of all sizes from her storage space.
She looked at the list of people Genevieve had compiled.
To her surprise, over a thousand people were on the list to buy water.
It was clear that Genevieve and her people held considerable prestige within the base.
Dean Coleman and the others with him looked on, their faces lighting up with surprise.
Claire Warner even took out several huge water tanks, each taller than a person and filled to the brim.
"This is great! My family is saved!"
The young girl with the Space Superpower from before shouted happily.
The water Nina Jacobs brought out was all water Lexy had secretly created over the last few days.
Some of it she had also collected into her storage space from The Aquifer when no one was looking.
And, of course, there was also the bottled water she had collected in the past.
"This water should be enough to last you for a while,"
"If you still have Crystal Cores, you can also trade them for supplies and medicine."
Claire Warner also produced several item lists, which showed the supplies she had for sale.
This was something Genevieve and the others had never expected.
"You actually have medicine? You even have antibiotics?!"
For ordinary people like them with average constitutions, medicine was a lifesaver.
Malcolm Holden grew agitated after seeing the names of several medicines.
Fortunately, they still had plenty of Crystal Cores for now.
"A lot of people in the base have died recently. Their leftover Crystal Cores are all sent to us."
Genevieve explained, her expression filled with sorrow.
Not all of these Crystal Cores were their own.
Many belonged to those who had passed away.
There was no regulation of Crystal Cores in the base. Sometimes, even if a regular Crystal Core was dropped on the ground, no one would bother to pick it up.
After all, the things had a price but no market; they had become so devalued that an entire basket of them couldn’t even buy a single bottle of water.
"No wonder no one goes out to kill zombies anymore,"
Nina Jacobs said.
In the outskirts of City D, you could see Superpower Users killing zombies everywhere, but such a sight was rare in Keldorn.
Most were just Survivors forced out of the base.
"Yeah. Who has the energy to kill zombies?"
While the two of them were talking, Malcolm Holden and the others had already written down the medicine and supplies they wanted to buy.
When they saw Claire Warner take out box after box of brand-new medicine, the crowd was moved to tears of joy.
Combined with the clean food and supplies, even Genevieve felt as if they were dreaming.
Watching her System Experience Points shoot up, Nina Jacobs also felt she’d made the right choice coming today.
Ever since entering Keldorn, her System Experience Points had stagnated.
"Can we trade again next time?"
Dean Coleman couldn’t help but ask.
Claire Warner nodded. "Of course. You can find me at Tomorrow Base, or you can look for Nina Jacobs."
"That’s good to hear."
Dean Coleman was relieved.
They had originally planned to go to Tomorrow Base, but they couldn’t bring themselves to abandon the survivors in Lornwood Base with whom they had shared so many hardships.
Genevieve also felt that now might not be the right time.
"It’s alright. Tomorrow Base will welcome you anytime,"
Claire Warner said.
The transaction lasted for more than three hours.
Before they left, Nina Jacobs asked, "By the way, do you know someone named Tobin?"
"You know Tobin?"
Dean Coleman’s expression was initially one of pleasant surprise, but then a strange look crossed his face as a thought occurred to him.
"It was Nina who wanted me to inquire," Claire Warner replied.
’Tobin should have returned to the base right after picking up the people. He’s very familiar with the route, after all. But by the time I left today, there was still no sign of him.’
Cordelia and the others were also worried about him.
"Tobin... I think someone very important to him passed away."
"He got into a fight in a fit of rage and was thrown into... thrown into a Correction Chamber..."
Dean Coleman said.
"Is it serious?"
It was the first time Nina Jacobs had ever heard the term "Correction Chamber."
She was worried about Tobin’s safety.
"Very serious. People thrown in there, even if they aren’t executed, will starve or die of thirst,"
Genevieve answered.
The Correction Chamber was basically a prison, except there were no guards inside. People thrown in were like being tossed into an abandoned warehouse.
Whether they were living or dead, their bodies could be discarded without a second thought.
"I understand. I’ll relay this to Nina Jacobs when I get back."
With that, Claire Warner left.
What Genevieve and the others said gave her a new understanding of the situation in Lornwood Base.
Her purpose for entering Lornwood Base, aside from investigating the supply situation, was to take the opportunity to promote Tomorrow Base.
’But Lornwood Base sounds despotic and chaotic right now. Perhaps I need to be more cautious...’
When Cordelia and the others heard what had happened to Tobin, they grew extremely anxious as well.
"I’ll go with you. I’m familiar with Lornwood Base. It’s too dangerous for you and Wayne Warner to go in just like that; you’ll definitely attract attention,"
Cordelia said.
"We’ll go too. One more person is one more helping hand."
Silas Crowley and Reginald Sutton were even more worried about the two women going alone.
Although Nina Jacobs was powerful, survival in there depended on more than just strength.
"Alright. We’ll set out tomorrow, then."
As soon as Nina Jacobs finished speaking, Cordelia immediately went to prepare.
By this time, Valerius Lucas, Hartley, and the others were all awake.
After learning that Nina Jacobs was going to Lornwood Base for a few days, Valerius Lucas and Hartley knocked on her office door.
Nina Jacobs’s office was more like a teahouse, located in a moderately sized open room just to the right of the main hall.
According to Thaddeus Wren, it used to be a registration office.
Nina Jacobs had placed a few linen sofas and a coffee table inside, along with several cat trees. Wayne Warner and Lexy would also rest here sometimes.
"Letters of introduction?"
Nina Jacobs looked surprised as she held the letters Valerius Lucas had given her.
The letters were addressed to different people.
"They’re all... acquaintances of ours from before. If you need to get things done, you can ask them for help,"
Valerius Lucas said.
They had held positions in Lornwood Base before, after all, so they still had some connections.
"Thank you. This is very helpful."
Nina Jacobs felt this was an unexpected windfall.
"Avoid the Correction Chamber if you can. The people inside are not to be trifled with."
Hartley and his group had left Lornwood Base two or three months ago, but they still remembered what it was like in there.
"Are they very strong?" Nina Jacobs asked.
Valerius Lucas and Hartley glanced at each other, then shook their heads.
"It has nothing to do with strength. Most of the people in there have lost their humanity."
"When you lock a group of people together to fend for themselves, the situation inside becomes far worse than it is outside."
’Unfortunately, they were powerless to do anything about it back then, just as they were now.’
’Besides, even if those people were released, they were so accustomed to plunder and slaughter that they would no longer be fit to live inside a base.’
"I understand."
Hearing this made Nina Jacobs realize that Tobin’s situation was even more troublesome.
"If you absolutely have to go in, you can look for this person."
Valerius Lucas said, pointing to one of the letters of introduction.
The name on it was Jared Crawford. At least, he had been one of the people in charge there two months ago.
Nina Jacobs thanked them both and then asked about the recovery of Valerius Lucas’s people.
After a full night and most of the day, Valerius Lucas and his forty-odd men were already able to walk normally.
Although they still got breathless after a few steps, they could all feel that they were getting better.
"We heard that you also rescued Felix Finch and his son, and now all of us."
"If anyone should be thanking anyone, it’s us who should be thanking you."
Valerius Lucas wasn’t one for flowery words. Felix Finch had also told them that Nina Jacobs didn’t lack for anything; she just wanted to build up Tomorrow Base.
They intended to express their gratitude through their actions from now on.
