After I Fully Prepared for the Apocalypse, the Ungrateful Cried with Regret

Chapter 395: Lornwood Base

Chapter 395: Chapter 395: Lornwood Base

"That’s true. We’ll take you to Silas Crowley’s place first."

Returning to Lornwood Base, Cordelia felt that her entire state of mind had changed.

The heavy feeling from before was gone.

They were heading to Silas Crowley’s place because the conditions there were better. Although he was sharing it with others, it was a standalone dorm building.

"Actually, I originally rented the entire building myself."

"Then a few friends I made on the base needed a place to crash, so I let them move in. I don’t know if they’ve found their own places yet..."

Silas Crowley explained as he led the group to a rust-spotted door.

When he took out his key and opened it, a sour, foul stench immediately assaulted them.

Silas Crowley frowned, looking at the messy living room.

The place had been old and worn, but he had at least kept it clean. Now, the living room had clearly turned into a foul-smelling garbage dump.

"Well, well, Silas Crowley is back?"

Just then, a nearby wooden door was pushed open, and a man wearing only boxer shorts walked out.

Immediately after, the doors to other rooms also opened.

The people who emerged, men and women, looked utterly listless. It was obvious they had just woken up.

Nina Jacobs and Cordelia had already backed out of the doorway.

"Get some clothes on," Silas Crowley said, his face grim.

"Hmph. We thought you’d died out there."

One of the men casually scooped a filthy T-shirt off the floor and put it on.

A few women, wearing only their underwear, did the same, grabbing some tattered cloth to drape over themselves as if it were outerwear.

"Feeling tough now? Too bad. This place is ours," one of the men said coldly.

"That’s bullshit! Silas Crowley paid a full year’s rent on this place. Since when did it become yours?" Reginald Sutton retorted angrily.

"It’s ours because I say it is."

"The last time the base came to register residents, this place was officially changed to my name, Edmund Lawson, as the head of household. Who told you to stay away for so long?"

"We thought a big star like you had been shacking up with some rich old lady."

When Edmund Lawson finished, the room erupted in mocking laughter.

"I only let you move in because I saw you were struggling."

"Since this place is mine, I’m taking it back."

Silas Crowley pulled out a dagger, which was already crackling with electricity.

At that moment, a wooden door was kicked open by a tall man.

"Let’s see who’s blind enough to cause trouble on my turf."

The man formed a Fireball in his hand, a menacing look on his face.

Edmund Lawson said smugly, "See that? That’s my big brother. A man who walked out of the Correction Pods alive."

"You dare challenge him? You’ll have to get past my brother’s Fire Fist first."

’A man who walked out of the Correction Pods?’

Hearing this, Nina Jacobs walked back inside. She patted Silas Crowley on the shoulder and said, "Let’s go."

"Go?"

Although Silas Crowley and Reginald Sutton were surprised, they put away their weapons.

"Hahaha, looks like the pretty lady knows what’s good for her. If you two ladies want to stay here, you’re always welcome," Edmund Lawson shouted smugly.

But the group had already walked away.

Silas Crowley looked ashamed. "I’m so sorry. I thought..."

He now deeply regretted being soft-hearted and taking in a few backstabbing roommates.

"Forget it. Even if you took the place back, it’s probably unlivable now."

"Let’s just go to my place," Cordelia said.

Reginald Sutton lived on a different floor in the same building as her. Although they were in a collective dormitory, at least the neighbors had been relatively harmonious before.

"Why don’t we go rent another place?" Reginald Sutton suggested, thinking it might be more convenient for everyone.

But Nina Jacobs refused.

"If we rent a new place, we’ll probably have to register our information."

That guy, Edmund Lawson, just said the base had recently registered occupant information for every dorm.

This struck Nina Jacobs as odd.

’Why would the base be registering information at a time like this?’

"They’ve never really registered people before. Maybe they’re just updating records?"

Cordelia didn’t think too much about it. "My place is a bit small, but at least it’ll be cleaner. And there should be a lot of empty rooms..."

Back when she was still living there, people around her died every few days.

There were plenty of empty rooms.

"Right. We won’t be staying for more than a few days anyway."

Nina Jacobs observed her surroundings as they walked.

Despite their attempts at disguise, the group still stood out on the road.

Especially the sturdy and well-built Wayne Warner.

The roads inside Lornwood Base were lined with destitute people, some lying on the ground, others staring blankly at passersby.

Some were fighting viciously over a piece of moldy, dry bread, while others acted as if they didn’t see a thing, as if it were a daily occurrence.

A cold glint of light flashed, and Wayne Warner immediately became alert.

It was a man being stabbed and brought to the ground by another with a sharp weapon.

Blood pooled on the ground.

Yet no one showed any sign of shock.

Not even Cordelia, Silas, or Reginald.

"Someone will come to clean up the body later, but as for the rest... the base won’t get involved," Cordelia explained.

"So you’re saying fighting, and even... killing, is allowed here?" Nina Jacobs realized.

To be precise, it wasn’t that it was allowed, but that no one bothered to manage such things.

"You could say that. It’s not completely safe inside the base, either."

"That’s why people with any sort of ability usually choose to team up with others."

"It’s hard for those who are alone."

Reginald Sutton seemed to be recalling some bad memories, his tone filled with disgust.

So he had never liked this place...

Fortunately, although Cordelia’s place was a collective dormitory, there happened to be many empty rooms in the same row.

"Cordelia, you’re back."

A somewhat hoarse voice called out.

Nina Jacobs saw a gaunt woman walk out of one of the rooms.

"Jenna?"

"It’s so good to see you again."

A happy expression appeared on Cordelia’s face.

She introduced her to the group. "This is Jenna. She used to take care of me a lot."

"Jenna, these are my friends."

Jenna took Cordelia’s hand and said with a smile,

"Any room here with an open door is free to live in."

"Although..."

Jenna’s voice seemed to choke up, but she continued, "I’ve cleaned every one of them."

"They’re a bit simple, but you can just pick whichever ones you like."

Nina Jacobs nodded, found a few adjoining rooms, and said,

"These will do. This way, we can look out for each other."

The rooms were all single-person rooms. Just as Jenna had said, they were simple, but clean.

Nina first picked a room with a slightly larger bed and had Wayne Warner open the black backpack he was carrying.

MEOW.

Lexy immediately wriggled out and nudged against Nina Jacobs’s side affectionately.

"You’ve been cooped up."

Nina Jacobs poured some water for Lexy.

She had been worried that Lexy would suffocate in the backpack, but the cat seemed to be in good spirits now.

At that moment, Cordelia and Jenna were still talking about something in the hallway. Nina Jacobs heard Cordelia’s low, incredulous gasp.

"...How could this happen..."

Cordelia had a sorrowful expression on her face.

"What’s wrong?" Nina Jacobs walked over and asked.

"It’s about Tobin. Someone very important to him went missing."

"Before he left, he gave all his supplies to a friend and entrusted her to him, but..."

"That’s why he got so angry and beat that friend half to death."

Cordelia had learned the full story of why Tobin was thrown into the Correction Pods from Jenna.

Jenna sighed as well. "Anyone who doesn’t come back is dead!"

"Isabella Ramsey didn’t even have a Superpower to protect herself. She must be..."

"Sigh. And that poor daughter of hers..."
