Chapter 411: Chapter 411: Asking Her for Rescue
Alistair Forrest, who was standing closest to them, had originally despised Susan Caldwell. But after overhearing their conversation, he felt a flicker of pity for her.
Once he was done pitying Susan Caldwell, he started pitying himself. The way those two flaunted their affection was just insane—they had no regard for the time, place, or occasion!
With them acting so lovey-dovey, when would he ever get a chance with Vera Xavier?
’It seems like she hasn’t even given me a proper glance yet.’ He suddenly felt so pathetic.
When Susan Caldwell saw that Nathaniel Nathan still hadn’t made a move, a sense of unease washed over her. ’How could anyone in this world possibly reject *her*?!’
Overcome with shame and rage, she shoved an elderly woman who was standing closest to her, knocking the woman to the ground.
The woman was old, and the fall broke her leg. She let out a series of agonizing screams.
Susan Caldwell’s action ignited the public’s fury once more. This time, there was no need for the young thugs to deliberately incite them; the enraged crowd had already swarmed around Susan Caldwell, shouting all sorts of obscenities in their local dialect.
It was too late for Leo Wright to lead Susan Caldwell away. All he could do was shield her with his body, using his back to absorb the punches and kicks from the furious crowd.
Even as Leo Wright shielded her, Susan Caldwell was still wondering, ’Why isn’t Nathaniel Nathan helping me? If he’d just step in today, I could spare him ten years of struggle!’
She couldn’t figure out why, so she could only pin all the blame on Vera Xavier. ’Vera must have said something she shouldn’t have to Nathaniel, deliberately tarnishing my reputation!’
She silently vowed to herself, ’I will absolutely not let Vera Xavier get away with this!’
A faint sense of regret also crept into her heart. ’If I’d known this would happen, I should have listened to my father and left for Veridia first thing in the morning!’
The moment she thought of it, she started shifting the blame to Skylar Crowe. ’If that idiot Skylar hadn’t injured her leg, I would have been long gone by now. It’s all her fault for holding me back.’
As she thought this, she conveniently forgot that she had stayed behind because she wanted to gamble on more stones. She had wanted to cut a better piece of jade, make more money, and buy back the IOU she had written to Vera Xavier.
Irene Jensen was right beside Susan Caldwell. The crowd hadn’t given her any trouble because during both the last incident—when Susan and Skylar Crowe bullied the vendor—and this current farce, Irene had been trying to play peacemaker and reason with Susan. Still, she was too close to the chaos and was bound to get caught in the crossfire.
As a result, she had a few scrapes as well.
Seeing the situation, she was afraid things would truly escalate. At this point, the only person who could save Susan was Vera Xavier.
So she ran over to Vera Xavier and said, "Susan can be a bit strong-willed, but she’s not a bad person. As for what happened yesterday, she was in the wrong, but it was just girls roughhousing a bit. Please, help Susan. I’m sure if you help her this time, she’ll be incredibly grateful to you once this is all over!"
Vera Xavier laughed when she heard this. "Miss Jensen, you give me too much credit. In a situation like this, how could I possibly help her?"
’Susan Caldwell isn’t a bad person?’ Vera felt like she had just heard the joke of the year.
’I would have thought someone with Irene Jensen’s intelligence could see right through Susan Caldwell’s games, but apparently not.’
But Vera Xavier had no major feud with Irene Jensen, either in her past life or this one, so she just treated the words as the joke they were.
