Vera Xavier didn’t want to talk to him. Aaron Cheney also gave him a disdainful look. "A rogue is still a rogue, standards or not!"

Nathaniel Nathan led Vera Xavier into what looked like the best restaurant in the small town. After they entered, Vera checked the time. "It’s only ten-thirty. Isn’t it a bit early to eat?"

They had eaten breakfast at eight in the morning. She’d had a large bowl of the local specialty noodles, along with an egg and a big piece of beef. She wasn’t the least bit hungry right now.

But she was the one who’d said it, so she had to own up to it, no matter how much she regretted it.

The restaurant’s food was quite distinctive. They even had authentic jizong mushrooms.

They were incredibly hard to come by; in fact, he had called the day before and pulled some strings to have the restaurant owner set these aside especially for them.

As they were finishing up, the owner came over especially to greet them. He announced that since they were the first customers of the day, their entire meal was on the house.

Vera hadn’t expected to get such a perk for eating early. She joked, "If that’s the case, next time we’re here, we’ll show up at seven in the morning and just eat straight through till noon."

The owner laughed and said, "You would be most welcome."

After the meal, Vera Xavier strolled out with Jack Judd and Aaron Cheney. Nathaniel Nathan took five 100-yuan bills from his bag and placed them on the counter. The owner rushed to refuse. "Sir, you saved my son’s life. I’ve always wanted to repay you properly but never had the chance. It’s so rare for you to come here; it’s only right that I treat you to a meal as your host."

Nathaniel Nathan said coolly, "I never accept handouts. Saving your son was nothing, I was just in the right place at the right time. You don’t need to dwell on it."

With that, he turned and walked out.
