Chapter 441: Chapter 441: Gaokao Top Scorer
Back then, Vera Xavier’s knowledge of medicinal herbs was purely theoretical, so she had been ripped off by that shop owner. He sold her a pile of herbs that hadn’t moved off the shelves in years, and the two groups even had a fierce argument over it.
Only after they got to know each other did Vera Xavier discover that the owner of that herb shop had a quirk. He disliked it when amateurs came to buy his herbs, feeling it was a desecration of the medicine, so he often played tricks on newcomers to the field.
In reality, he was borderline obsessive about the quality of his medicinal herbs, which was why his shop actually had the best selection in the entire market.
The next morning, the group bought tickets and returned to Crestfall.
The journey was long and the round trip was exhausting, taking almost a month in total. By this time, the college entrance exam scores had long been released, and if all went well, the acceptance letters should have already been mailed out.
After returning to Crestfall, the four of them went their separate ways. Because the incident between Jack Judd and Cara Preston had caused a huge scandal, he couldn’t be seen with Vera Xavier at the moment, lest it arouse suspicion.
Aaron Cheney was the youngest, after all, and it was his first time being away from home for so long. The moment he was back in Crestfall, he couldn’t wait to get home.
Although Nathaniel Nathan was reluctant to part with Vera Xavier, they had not officially held a wedding ceremony, so it wouldn’t be appropriate for them to openly live together. He walked Vera Xavier to the entrance of her residential compound and then went home.
As Vera Xavier walked into the compound, she noticed that all the neighbors she passed, whether she knew them or not, were smiling and greeting her. "Vera, you’re back? Such a good kid."
Vera Xavier politely smiled back at each of them, but she couldn’t help but wonder, ’They never seemed this enthusiastic before. What’s going on?’
She continued greeting people as she walked, and just as she was nearing her home, the sharp-eyed Grandma Dixon spotted her. The older woman immediately came out of her yard, her face beaming with joy, and said, "Vera, you’re truly amazing! Grandma Dixon is so proud of you!"
Vera Xavier smiled, took out two boxes of flower cakes she had brought back from Yulara, and handed them to Grandma Dixon. "Thank you, Grandma Dixon. I brought back a little local specialty. It’s not much, but I hope you’ll like it."
"Oh, you’re such a thoughtful child, bringing a gift back for me from your trip! This shows you were thinking of your Grandma Dixon. I’m overjoyed, how could I possibly complain!" Grandma Dixon said happily.
Grandma Dixon didn’t care whether the gift was expensive or not; what mattered to her was the thought Vera Xavier put into it. Ever since Vera Xavier had moved from the countryside to the city and become her neighbor, she had been very fond of the girl.
The girl was smart and perceptive, and she wasn’t a pushover who let people walk all over her. She was also deeply loyal. It was just a pity she’d had such a hard life, with an unreliable mother and now Zachary Preston bedridden and unable to move.
Vera Xavier gave Grandma Dixon a sweet smile, and Grandma Dixon continued, "You were the top scorer in our province’s college entrance exam this time. Did you know?"
Before Vera Xavier could answer, her grandmother peeked her head out of the house and said with a laugh, "You’re terrible, my dear friend! This is wonderful news for our family, and I was going to be the first one to tell Vera. But you beat me to it!"
Her words sounded like a complaint, but they were clearly meant in jest, and of course Grandma Dixon could tell. She laughed and replied, "With such great news, I wanted to share in the joy too! Vera, when you have time, you should tutor those two little rascals of mine. It would save me from them running around and driving me crazy."
