Chapter 459: Chapter 459: To Crush and Obliterate
Cara Preston glanced at her fair, delicate hands. Her fingers were long and slender. While living with the Preston Family, she hadn’t learned much, but she had certainly picked up Rona Langdon’s laziness, so she almost never did any housework.
’In her mind, she was a pampered young lady, far too good for such rough work.’
She was now wondering if she should hire a maid just to wait on her.
She turned to glance in the direction of the Preston Family estate, snorted, and muttered a curse. "Damn old hag, how dare you hit me! Someone like you? I wouldn’t even want you as my maid; you’d be terrible at it."
After cursing, she ground her teeth and said, enunciating every word, "Vera Xavier, we’ll just wait and see. I have money now, so I have a much better head start than you. So what if you get into Veridia University? You can’t even afford the tuition!"
She had some street smarts, at least. Despite her love of luxury, she knew not to flaunt her wealth and understood she couldn’t be too conspicuous right now. First, she needed to rent a place to live.
She had already looked into some rentals, so she headed directly for a place she’d seen before.
The sky was already growing dim, and the path to the apartment she wanted to rent led through the same dark alley where Jack Judd had once ambushed Vera Xavier.
Cara Preston felt a pang of anxiety as she reached the entrance to the dark alley, but she told herself it wasn’t completely dark yet, so there was no need to be afraid.
So, she started walking slowly into the alley. Just as she reached the halfway point, two groups of thugs suddenly emerged, blocking both ends.
Cara Preston’s heart leaped in alarm. She was fairly quick-witted and immediately screamed, "Hel—"
Before she could get the "p" out, a hand clamped over her mouth. Terrified, she began to struggle with all her might, but she was a pampered girl with no physical strength. How could she possibly break free from a grown man’s grasp?
Someone grabbed for her purse. The money inside was her ticket to a good life after leaving the Preston Family; how could she possibly let them take it?
She fought with all her might to get her purse back. Perhaps she struggled too hard, because the thugs lost their patience. One of them chopped the side of her neck, and her vision went black as her body went limp and she passed out.
One of the thugs groped her chest and grinned. "Boss, this chick’s a looker! Why don’t we take her back and have some fun?"
The masked Jack Judd shot him a glare. "Keep your hands to yourself. I promised my sister-in-law we’d be gangsters with class. This woman might look pretty, but her heart is black. She’s too dirty. Don’t lower our standards."
The thug chuckled. "You’re right, Boss."
This wasn’t a place to linger. After grabbing all of Cara Preston’s money, the group scattered in all directions.
To trick Cara Preston, Vera Xavier had wrapped the stacks of Training Vouchers with real bills. In total, there was eight thousand in actual cash among the fakes. Given Cara’s vile nature, Vera had no intention of letting her keep even that.
Giving someone a glimmer of hope only to snatch it away was the most effective way to break their spirit.
When Cara Preston woke up and discovered all her money was gone, she felt her hopes shatter. Her future seemed pitch-black. She collapsed right there in the dark alley and began to sob.
Once she finished crying, she thought about reporting it to the police. But after a moment’s consideration, she realized it would be useless. She couldn’t possibly tell the police she had lost four hundred thousand.
’So, even though she’d been robbed, she just had to accept it!’
