Chapter 469: Chapter 469: A Little Guilty (Part 1)
But even if Winter Sullivan saw through her, what could she do? Susan Caldwell was her daughter, after all, and she couldn’t just ignore her.
The words Susan Caldwell had mumbled as if in a daze left a bad taste in Winter Sullivan’s mouth. She envied mothers and daughters who were so close they could talk about anything.
This daughter of hers had been full of schemes since childhood and would never tell her what was truly on her mind. Every time Susan tried to get close, it was always for some ulterior motive.
Over time, she grew weary of this dynamic, and their mother-daughter relationship had always been strained.
She realized she missed her son. However, Sheldon Caldwell seemed to be away on a mission, so she couldn’t find him to talk, even if she wanted to.
Winter Sullivan and Julian Caldwell both had military backgrounds, but their specializations were different, which led their careers in completely different directions.
Winter Sullivan was a weapons expert, so she had always been stationed at the military’s research institute. She believed that being a soldier was the noblest profession in the world, which was why Sheldon Caldwell had attended a military academy and joined the army at a young age.
Julian Caldwell, on the other hand, had an incredible sensitivity to numbers. He had been interested in economics since he was a boy and displayed astounding talent in the field. Combined with the Caldwell family’s influence, he had a smooth journey to his current position as Minister of Commerce.
He felt that military life was too arduous. He doted on Susan Caldwell and didn’t want her to endure such hardships, so he focused on cultivating her aptitude for economics instead.
However, while Susan Caldwell was an excellent student, she hadn’t inherited his gift in this area. Susan wasn’t particularly sensitive to numbers; all her training had only made her slightly better at it than the average person.
’Winter Sullivan truly felt that Susan should have gone to a military academy after her college entrance exams this year, rather than following Julian’s plan for her to attend Veridia University. But it was too late now. The acceptance letter from Veridia University had already arrived at the Caldwell family’s home.’
She didn’t take Susan to the hospital. Instead, she went straight to the research institute to continue her work on weapons. ’To others, weapons may seem cold and lifeless, but to me, they’re far better than dealing with all the tiresome problems at home.’
After Nathaniel Nathan finished up his work, he was suddenly struck by the urge to see Vera Xavier. He immediately grabbed his backpack, threw in a set of pajamas, and was about to head out when Master Nathan’s voice called out, "Planning on climbing over the wall again?"
Nathaniel knew he could never hide his trips to see Vera from his grandfather. He gave a soft "mm-hmm" in acknowledgment, but Master Nathan stopped him. "Vera is still a student. You’re running over to see her every day. What if she gets pregnant with my little great-grandson? It’s no big deal for you, but it would be trouble for her."
Nathaniel coughed lightly. ’Grandpa is way too open-minded. The pressure is immense.’
He said calmly, "You’re overthinking it. We just talk under the covers. We’re not as... wild as you imagine."
Master Nathan grew anxious at this. "Talking under the covers? And you don’t do anything else? You useless brat! You have a stunning, jade-like beauty lying next to you and you’re completely indifferent! Is there something wrong with you... down there?"
Nathaniel Nathan: "..."
If anyone else had said that, he would have thrown them out of the room by now.
’He’d get in trouble for sleeping with Vera, but if he didn’t, his own grandfather would question his abilities in *that* department. This was just ridiculous!’
His expression darkened instantly. "What nonsense! I was just messing with you, and you actually believed me!"
