The CEO's Wife Is a Medical Master

Chapter 480: Her Family (6)

Chapter 480: Chapter 480: Her Family (6)

The middle-aged woman sneered, "It sounds like you Xaviers have some pride after all."

She snorted. "But you’re just a bunch of paupers. What’s the point of talking about pride?"

Mrs. Xavier trembled with rage. "How can you be such a bully!"

"How am I bullying you?" the middle-aged woman said smugly. "If you ask me, penniless folk like you are better off dead, so you don’t waste food! What are you staring at me for? If you’ve got the guts, then pay back the money!"

She then turned to Chloe and said with a look of disdain, "And you, little girl, don’t be so reluctant. Given your family’s circumstances, the fact that my nephew is willing to marry you is a blessing your ancestors could only dream of. Marrying you means he’ll be dragged down by your whole family of worthless losers!"

Furious, Drew rushed forward, ready to strike her. She just tilted her chin up defiantly. "You want to hit me? Go on, I dare you! I’ll have you know, I’m expensive. If you so much as lay a finger on me, it’ll cost you ten yuan!"

Mr. Xavier held Drew back. "Don’t be rash."

The middle-aged woman gloated, "A bunch of useless cowards. You don’t even dare to lay a hand on me. If you’re not going to do anything, then I’m leaving! In a couple of days, I’ll have Archer the Butcher bring Chloe to his house."

She turned to leave, but a clear, cold voice stopped her. "Wait a moment."

The middle-aged woman froze. She heard Vera say, "Ma’am, you’re not young anymore. You should really watch your mouth. With the way you speak, you’d better hope karma doesn’t visit your children."

The middle-aged woman eyed Vera skeptically. "What, you want to pay back the debt for the Xavier family?"

"That’s right." Vera pulled a wad of cash from her bag and waved it. The woman’s eyes immediately lit up, and she reached out to grab the money.

But Vera snatched her hand back, smiling sweetly. "Sign this receipt first, then you can take the money."

She held out a receipt she had written while the others were arguing. The woman glanced at her. "We’re all neighbors here. Getting the money is good enough. What’s the point of a receipt?"

"Normal neighbors wouldn’t need a receipt," Vera said, still smiling sweetly. "But considering what a foul and shameless mouth you have, ma’am, it’s safer for us to have one."

The woman immediately flew into a rage. "What gives you the right to insult me?"

"The money in my hand gives me the right," Vera said calmly. "By your own logic, whoever has money can do as they please, and whoever doesn’t is a loser. Well, right now, I have more money than you. So what’s wrong with me insulting you a bit?"

The woman flew into another rage and lunged to strike Vera. Vera spoke slowly, her voice unwavering. "I was the top scorer in the province for the college entrance exams. Everyone says I’m a literary prodigy sent from the heavens. If you dare to hit me, you’d better pray you don’t get struck by lightning."

She had an imposing aura, far different from the meek villagers the woman was used to dealing with. The woman finally realized she had met her match and couldn’t bully Vera the way she had the rest of the Xavier family.

The woman shot Vera a venomous glare. Vera, however, maintained her faint smile. "Ma’am, you came here for money, and the money is right here. If you refuse to sign the receipt, I’m not going to pay you. And don’t you go around claiming the Xavier family won’t pay you back."

The middle-aged woman knew the real reason Archer the Butcher had been willing to lend the Xaviers money in the first place: he had designs on their daughter.
