Chapter 805 - 795: Dad Shen’s Last Stand

Chapter 805: Chapter 795: Dad Shen’s Last Stand

"Well, you know, my dad’s actually really nice, he’s not usually like this. Maybe he got excited when he saw you, hahaha!"

At first Shen Yi was still trying to comfort him, but by the end she couldn’t help laughing herself.

Right then Shen Yi’s mom was cooking in the kitchen. Su Qing went to help but got pushed back out. Of course he was just doing it for form’s sake; it makes you look polite, and any family that actually knows what’s what would never let a first-time guest do chores in their home.

Meanwhile, Shen Yi’s dad was forcibly shoved back into the bedroom by the mother and daughter to change clothes. I mean, it’s blazing hot in midsummer, and he’s wearing a whole suit with three layers inside and out—looked downright uncomfortable.

"Heh, yeah... I could tell. I feel like Uncle’s really something else!" Su Qing said, half laughing, then took a sip of water.

He’d sweat plenty from being scared; his mouth and tongue felt completely parched.

Shen Yi’s place was a two-story mini-villa, simple and tasteful. There was a garage and parking spot in the yard. The first floor had the living room, kitchen, dining room, and guest room; the second floor had four bedrooms, two bathrooms, and another living area—very spacious, plus a wraparound balcony.

"Come on, I wasn’t lying to you. I really don’t know what’s up with my dad today. But don’t worry, my mom and I already talked to him. Relax, he’s not going to do anything to you!" Shen Yi said.

She felt a bit embarrassed; after all, when she went to Su Qing’s house, the scene had been completely different.

While they were talking, Shen Yi’s dad came down from the second floor, and the next second Su Qing was stunned. Shen Tiancheng was now wearing loose pants, his shirt unbuttoned at the chest, with a ridiculously thick gold chain around his neck. He looked like some big shot on his way to eat fish, and he even had a toothpick in his mouth.

"Mm, this is much more comfortable. Kid, sit, sit, sit—come chat with me for a bit!"

As Shen Tiancheng spoke, he walked down with a "I fear no one" swagger, twisting his neck from time to time, face blank, exuding quite a bit of pressure.

Talking as he came over, he clapped Su Qing on the shoulder, then sat down on the sofa by himself, legs crossed, arms spread out along the back of the sofa, grinning at him.

Scared wasn’t really the right word, because thanks to the narrative Su Qing already knew why Shen Yi’s dad had that expression, knew why he was putting on this act, and even understood perfectly what was going through the man’s mind.

Basically, he wanted to suppress him a bit with sheer presence, at the very least to make sure he wouldn’t dare bully his daughter.

"What were you two talking about just now, having so much fun? Share it so I can have a laugh too?"

Hearing that, Su Qing instinctively glanced at Shen Yi.

Under his gaze, Shen Yi just felt emotionally exhausted, and oddly, a bit ashamed. She slapped her forehead, then yelled toward the kitchen:

"Mom!! Come out and look at Dad! He’s fooling around again!"

As soon as Shen Yi finished, Su Qing’s future mother-in-law walked out of the kitchen with a kitchen knife in hand:

"What’s going on?"

"Hey, I told you to change clothes and you dress like some street punk? You’re a grown man—do you have any sense of propriety left? Are you trying to piss me off to death?"

Seeing the knife in his wife’s hand, Shen Yi’s dad chickened out again and hurriedly ran back upstairs.

"Listen, Su, don’t mind him. Your uncle’s basically a big kid; he’s not usually like this!"

This time even Shen Yi’s mom was a bit embarrassed. This was really too humiliating.

"N-no, not at all. Uncle’s outfit is... very... very fashionable!" Su Qing said with an awkward chuckle.

When Shen Tiancheng came back down again, his clothes were finally normal. The height-increasing insoles in his shoes, however, were still there—no helping it, that was a last bit of stubborn dignity for a father. I must be taller than you.

"Here, try this tea of mine. Dongting Biluochun, a friend gave it to me!" Shen Tiancheng said with a cheerful smile. His expression finally softened quite a bit.

No helping it—his attempt at putting on a stern face had flopped, and once it failed it just vanished. Since the high-handed tactic didn’t work, he switched to a softer approach.

After all, this was his prospective son-in-law, not an enemy. Plus, Su Qing’s performance had been decent; at the very least, when things got awkward he’d offered him a way to step down.

Su Qing, of course, graciously played along.

"Thank you, Uncle!" He took the tea with a smile and took a small sip, without saying anything like "good tea" or whatever. He didn’t know tea anyway; being polite was enough.

"Yi told me you two met last year when she had that car accident?" Shen Tiancheng asked with a smile.

Now that he’d decided not to put on a stern act, the mood naturally relaxed.

Su Qing nodded. "Yeah, I happened to be there last year. We didn’t know each other at the time though. I never thought that a week later, I’d be out eating with friends and grabbing a cab by the roadside, and I’d happen to get into Yi’s car. That’s how we met properly."

"Heh, now that’s fate. I know what my girl is like—she’s picky and has a temper. In the future, when things come up, you should give way to her more. But if she ever really goes too far, you call Uncle and your Auntie. We’ll definitely talk some sense into her."

"I don’t think so; her personality and temper are great. We’ve never even had a fight. And most of the time, she’s the one taking care of me. Anything I can’t decide on, I have to ask her."

"She’s older than you, so that’s how it should be. Oh right, are you making money investing in movies now?"

"It’s okay. Wandering Earth made some profit, and then I invested in three other projects. One of them is hitting theaters tomorrow."

"Right, right, I saw stuff about you online. That incident a while back was pretty big. Your Auntie and I were worried it might affect you." Shen Tiancheng said with a smile.

Hearing that, Su Qing felt a bit embarrassed. A few days ago he’d been hit with a massive wave of online abuse. Luckily, for some reason he’d been incredibly sleepy during those days. By the time he came back to himself, Shen Yi had already used her money powers to crush the public opinion, even turning it around.

At the end of the day his mistake wasn’t that serious, and his motives could stand up to scrutiny. As for those people who’d mobbed him online, all they had were guesses and no evidence at all.

Under Shen Yi’s financial firepower, they naturally scattered like smoke, never amounting to much.

"So you and Auntie already know. Honestly, I didn’t think that much about it—I just went over to take a look. Didn’t expect that kind of thing to happen!"

Very quickly, the atmosphere between the two of them in the living room became much more relaxed.

And in the kitchen, the mother and daughter cooking watched the two men chatting and laughing in the living room and couldn’t help smiling, especially Shen Yi’s mom—she was over the moon.

She only had one daughter. If the girl got married, they’d basically gain a son. Besides, in today’s society, the whole "raise sons to rely on in old age" idea was long dead, and her daughter’s conditions were excellent. Their savings were more than enough for retirement.

Right now she was just hoping her girl would get married soon and have a child she could dote on. Then she’d have something to keep her busy again.

Of course, it was also because her daughter was getting older; she really couldn’t afford not to worry. Thankfully, Su Qing had shown up at just the right time, with just the right conditions.

"Look at your dad. Before you two came back, he had a face longer than a donkey’s, and now he’s grinning like that. Still wanted to put on airs—what kind of airs? If you ask me, he’s just bored.

Gotta say though, this kid Su is really great. Good-looking too. Sure, he’s a bit young, but he’s got capability. Way better than those guys your dad’s friends wanted to introduce to you."

Hearing that, Shen Yi couldn’t help lifting her chin proudly as she said:

"Well yeah, you should see who picked him out. Let me tell you, your daughter used quite a few tricks to scam him into coming back with me."

"Scammed him well, nicely done. There are way fewer excellent boys than excellent girls nowadays. When you meet one, you’ve got to make the first move. So tell Mom honestly—have you thought about when you want to get married?" Shen Yi’s mom glanced at Su Qing in the living room, gave her daughter a thumbs up, and asked quietly.

Shen Yi’s expression turned a little bashful. "Mom, isn’t that a bit soon?"

"Soon how? Didn’t you go meet his parents at the start of this month? I’m not trying to rush you; it’s just that you really are at that age. And besides, you’ve already met the parents—what’s the point in dragging it out? Even if you don’t manage to have the wedding this year, you should at least find a way to get the marriage settled. Once it’s settled, you can decide the date whenever you want. Deal?"

Shen Yi: "You’re really that scared I won’t get married?"

"I’m scared you’ll rot at home and start growing maggots."

Shen Yi: ...
