Chapter 646: Chapter 315: An Improvement from Before
Meanwhile, another group was in the middle of a combat simulation.
"Han Ruoxi, watch your rear and provide cover!" Li Chang’an directed through his headset.
"I know!" Han Ruoxi spun around, and an arc of electricity struck the target with precision.
"Captain, you can’t expect me to watch three sides by myself, can you? What is everyone else doing?!"
"Ask them yourself!" Li Chang’an replied unhurriedly.
"I’m covering the left flank!" Bai Lin’s voice came through.
"But you moved too fast. I hadn’t even sent the data over yet!"
"So can’t you two coordinate better?" Han Ruoxi complained through gritted teeth, but her hands never stopped moving.
The third group was doing reaction training. Shen Qiuyue stood in the center of a field dotted with sensor lights, which lit up randomly, requiring her to strike the target points in the shortest time possible.
"Too slow!" Li Chang’an’s voice came through again.
"Your swing speed is clearly lacking. Your movements aren’t fluid enough, especially on consecutive strikes!"
"I know," Shen Qiuyue replied flatly. The Dueling Sword in her hand flashed out the next second, precisely striking a sensor light that had just lit up.
After three rounds, everyone was so tired they were drenched in sweat.
Sun Yang collapsed right on the ground, panting heavily.
"Captain, isn’t this intensity a bit much?" he asked, barely managing to lift his head.
"We need a break, don’t we? We’ll be completely wrecked if this keeps up!"
"If you’re wrecked, it just means your stamina is lacking!" Li Chang’an replied bluntly from the side.
"Training is meant to push your limits, not to make you comfortable!"
"Captain, I really don’t know what to do with you!" Han Ruoxi said with a look of exasperation, wiping her face with a towel.
"Do you think we’re machines? Can’t you be a little nicer to us once in a while?"
"I’m already nice enough to you!" Li Chang’an glanced at her.
"Besides, today’s mission isn’t over yet!"
"It’s not over?!" Sun Yang’s eyes went wide.
"Captain, you’re trying to kill us! The three training rounds this morning were already like this. What else do you plan to put us through this afternoon?"
"Tactical drills this afternoon," Li Chang’an said, looking at his watch.
"You have two hours for lunch and rest. Assemble sharp at two p.m.!"
"I get a headache just hearing the words ’tactical drills’!" Han Ruoxi grumbled as she packed up her gear.
’What in the world goes on in the Captain’s head, tormenting us squad members like this every day...’
"Stop complaining," Shen Qiuyue cut in coldly.
"Complaining is useless. Get some rest. We have a hard fight this afternoon."
「At two in the afternoon, the Insect Hunter Squad reassembled at the simulation grounds.」
This drill was a comprehensive combat mission. The grounds had been set up to resemble a ruined city, full of narrow alleys and the wreckage of tall buildings.
"The objective of this mission is to rescue a captured friendly!" Li Chang’an explained the mission briefing simply, standing before the field.
"The enemy has heavy defenses. Your task is to bring the target back to the safe zone. No one is permitted to act alone during the process!"
"’No one is permitted to act alone’ again..." Sun Yang muttered under his breath.
"Captain, can’t you just let us improvise for once?"
"The result of you improvising would be getting yourself killed in enemy territory!" Li Chang’an answered coldly.
"Remember, there’s no room for individual heroism on the battlefield, only teamwork!"
Once the mission began, the squad quickly divided their tasks and began coordinating.
"Bai Lin, scan for enemy positions!" Han Ruoxi commanded through her headset.
"Already on it!" Bai Lin was hunched over his equipment. In a few seconds, an image of the enemy distribution appeared before everyone.
"The target is in the center of the ruins, surrounded by five guards!"
"Shen Qiuyue, you’re on point, clear the obstacles. Han Ruoxi, provide ranged support!" Li Chang’an quickly assigned their roles.
"Sun Yang, you’re with me for the frontal assault!"
"Roger that!" The team snapped into formation.
The mission was anything but easy. The enemy guards were widely dispersed, and their firepower was fierce.
Although Han Ruoxi’s Arc Attacks were precise, the enemy’s cover from the tall buildings still allowed their firepower to pose a significant threat to the squad.
"Sniper on the left! Prioritize and eliminate!" Li Chang’an ordered decisively.
"Understood!" Shen Qiuyue burst forward in a sprint, her sword flashing as she took down the sniper behind cover.
"Nearing the objective. Prepare to fall back!" Han Ruoxi reminded them over the headset.
"All units, fall back! Provide covering fire for the withdrawal!" Li Chang’an yelled, firing as he led the team back to the safe zone.
After the mission, everyone was so exhausted they could barely stand up straight, but each of them wore a faint, satisfied smile.
"Captain, how was our coordination this time?" Han Ruoxi asked between breaths.
"Not bad," Li Chang’an nodded.
"It’s an improvement, but there are still a lot of issues.
Back for a debriefing. We’ll summarize!"
"Another debriefing..." Sun Yang plopped onto the ground, his face a mask of misery.
"Captain, can’t you let us catch our breath?"
"Cut the crap," Li Chang’an shot him a cold glance.
"The sooner we debrief, the faster we solve the problems!"
The squad members got up reluctantly, dragging their exhausted bodies toward the operations room.
「And so, time flew by, and another period passed.」
The Insect Hunter Squad had grown accustomed to life stationed on Lion’s Fang Star.
Daily training and drills.
"Sun Yang!" Li Chang’an stood in the center of the training grounds, twirling a Saw Chain Sword in his hand.
Crouching on the ground fiddling with his Pulse Gun, Sun Yang answered without looking up.
"Yo, Captain, what’s up? What do you want me to do now? Don’t tell me it’s target practice again. I’m telling you, my marksmanship is unbeatable. I don’t need the practice!"
"You’re unbeatable?" Li Chang’an sneered.
"In yesterday’s training match, all three of your shots were off. You didn’t even pierce an insect’s carapace.
And you call yourself unbeatable?"
Sun Yang froze for a moment, then looked around and muttered under his breath.
"Captain, you don’t have to be so blunt! Everyone can hear you! Besides, that was because the target was too small. It didn’t match the size of a normal insect at all. It was a design flaw!"
"Target was too small?" Li Chang’an pointed to Han Ruoxi nearby.
"Even Ruoxi can hit it precisely with her Electric Skill, and you, the one with the gun, are still making excuses?"
"Alright, alright, I’ll shut up!" Sun Yang stood up, looking utterly defeated.
"I’ll go to the firing range, okay? I’ll practice right now, and I won’t stop until you’re satisfied!"
Han Ruoxi stood to the side with her arms crossed, a smug look on her face.
"Sun Yang, if you were even half as accurate as me, our squad would get chewed out half as much!"
"Oh, give me a break, your highness! Are you getting full of yourself? Besides, I use a firearm and you use a Superpower. Is that even a fair comparison?" Sun Yang retorted, but his feet were already carrying him swiftly toward the firing range.
Shen Qiuyue sat on a bench at the edge of the training grounds, polishing her High-Energy Dueling Sword without looking up.
"Listening to you two bicker every day has become background noise.
Maybe I should practice with Sun Yang and see which is better: his marksmanship or my sword’s speed!"
Sun Yang overheard and quickly waved his hands in dismissal.
"Forget it, Eldest Miss Shen. I wouldn’t dare compete with you.
Last time we dueled, you had your sword at my neck before I even took the safety off my Pulse Gun. I’d like to live a few more days, thank you!"
Shen Qiuyue glanced up at him.
"Good that you know. Saves us from wasting time."
Bai Lin sat in a corner, a small computer screen in front of him, his fingers flying across the keyboard.
The headset on his head bobbed slightly; he seemed completely engrossed in his own world.
Li Chang’an walked over and clapped him on the shoulder.
"Bai Lin, don’t just mess around with your hacking techniques. Shouldn’t our squad be doing some tactical analysis? We need a foolproof plan for the next time we encounter an insect swarm!"
Bai Lin took off his headset and looked up at him.
"The tactical analysis was done a long time ago. I sent it to your terminal. Is it my fault you didn’t look at it?"
"I looked at it!" Li Chang’an rubbed his nose.
"But, you know, I think we still need to simulate a few more scenarios. There are too many variables in actual combat."
