Chapter 657: Chapter 321: I Was Wrong, Alright?
"That was a close call!" Sun Yang sighed, settling back into the passenger seat.
"But we worked pretty well together, right?"
"Pretty well?" Shen Qiuyue said flatly.
"If my first sword strike hadn’t been so fast, your ranged support would have been half a second too late!"
"Alright, alright, my bad, okay?" Sun Yang raised his hands in surrender.
"That’s enough. Stop arguing." Li Chang’an stepped on the gas, and the vehicle continued toward the next area.
"We’re just getting started. Stay sharp. There could be bigger trouble ahead."
"Captain, when you say ’bigger trouble’... you don’t actually mean the High-tier Insect Race, do you?" Sun Yang scratched his head, looking uneasy.
"To be honest, I’ve never faced them head-on. They kind of give me the creeps."
"If you’re scared, you should have gone home early. Don’t drag us down out here," Shen Qiuyue said bluntly.
"No, no, no! I was just asking! Sister Shen, why are you always on my case?" Sun Yang forced an awkward smile.
"I’m just concerned for everyone’s safety!"
"Concerned for our safety, or just full of crap?" Han Ruoxi poked her head out from the back seat.
"I think your mouth runs faster than your brain. After today’s patrol, I suggest the Captain add some new training regimens for him. Specifically, to build up his courage."
"Hey now, Xiaohan, that’s not very nice!" Sun Yang sighed dramatically.
"We’re supposed to be on the same team, and you’re trying to make things difficult for me?"
"Being on the same team doesn’t stop me from recommending extra training," Han Ruoxi shrugged, pulling out a snack and starting to munch on it.
"What do you think, Captain?"
"Makes sense," Li Chang’an said calmly.
"But whether you get extra training depends on your performance. Sun Yang, don’t disappoint me."
"I’m doomed, I’m doomed! There’s no escaping it now!" Sun Yang smacked his head.
"Captain, you’re being too serious! It was just a slip of the tongue. Can’t you let me off the hook?"
"Let you off the hook?" Li Chang’an glanced at him.
"Do you know who assigned this mission?"
"Who?" Sun Yang froze.
"Instructor Wei." A small smile played on Li Chang’an’s lips.
"He said you’ve all been getting sloppy lately. He gave me this mission to sober you up."
"Instructor Wei!" Sun Yang collapsed back into his seat, hands clutching his head.
"That old geezer really has it out for me! Captain, you have to be the judge here! He made me run ten kilometers last time, and now this..."
"You’re complaining about ten kilometers?" Shen Qiuyue snorted.
"Why don’t you mention how he made me do a hundred one-handed sword swings last time?"
"Well, I had it rough too!" Sun Yang quickly turned his head.
"Didn’t Han Ruoxi have to stand at attention for an hour? We’re all victims here, so why won’t any of you stick up for me!"
"Because you talk too much," Han Ruoxi said, looking up with her mouth full of snacks.
"Weren’t you the one standing on the side laughing at me when I had to stand there for an hour?"
"Ahem, well, I was just trying to lighten the mood..." Sun Yang’s expression was a little awkward.
"Oh, let’s not bring up the past. Captain, look, after this patrol is over, do you think we can talk to Instructor Wei and ask him to stop putting us through all this trouble?"
"Don’t even think about it," Li Chang’an said bluntly.
"He just doesn’t like you. If you don’t shut your mouth, he’s liable to add another ten kilometers."
"Fine, fine, fine! I’ll shut up!" Sun Yang immediately made a gesture like he was zipping his lips.
"From now on, I won’t say another word. I’ll just focus on the patrol!"
The armored vehicle continued through the wasteland. Li Chang’an glanced at the map on his terminal from time to time, confirming their patrol route.
The cabin fell quiet for a few minutes before Han Ruoxi suddenly spoke up.
"Captain, this area is near the northern mining district. Could there be trouble in the mines? There were rumors before that the Rebel Army was active there."
"That’s definitely a possibility," Li Chang’an nodded.
"However, the mining district is heavily patrolled by the garrison. We just need to cover the perimeter as per our mission objectives.
If we find anything unusual, report it immediately!"
"Can we really count on those guys from the garrison?" Shen Qiuyue frowned.
"I heard before that there were several patrol oversights near the mines, which let the Insect Race slip through the cracks."
"That’s why we were sent here to plug the gaps," Bai Lin interjected.
"The garrison has limited manpower, and their equipment might not be up to date. These problems are pretty normal."
"Normal or not, if there’s a problem, we’re the ones who’ll have to clean up their mess," Han Ruoxi sighed.
"I really don’t want to be chased by the Insect Race!"
"The Insect Race chasing you?" Sun Yang suddenly blurted out.
"How thrilling would that be! Han Ruoxi, you can zap them, so they wouldn’t be able to catch you, right?"
"Sun Yang, are you itching for a fight?" Han Ruoxi turned and glared at him.
"How about next time we run into the Insect Race, I let you take the lead?"
"No, no, no! I was just kidding!" Sun Yang quickly waved his hands.
"You taking the lead would be a waste of talent! A job like that needs me, the firepower specialist!"
"Firepower specialist?" Shen Qiuyue sneered.
"Let’s see you get through one fight without dropping the ball first."
"Sister Shen, that hurts!" Sun Yang patted his chest.
"I’ve never dropped the ball! At most, I just have a little Soul Emergence now and then!"
"Enough. Quiet down," Li Chang’an said, raising his voice slightly.
"We’re at the entrance to the mining district. Get ready to disembark."
The team quickly gathered their gear as the vehicle slowly came to a stop.
On the outskirts of the mining district, a few abandoned transport vehicles were scattered about. The faint smell of metal hung in the air.
"Something’s not right here," Bai Lin said, walking over to one of the transport vehicles and crouching down to inspect it.
