Chapter 757: Chapter 371: A Bit Too Cautious
On the way, Bai Lin continuously scanned their rear with a terminal, making sure no enemies were in pursuit.
"The rear is clear for now!"
Bai Lin reported in a low voice.
"I don’t see any of the Insect Race following us!"
"Don’t let your guard down!"
Li Chang’an didn’t relax his guard.
"These enhanced types don’t operate alone. There might be others nearby!"
"Brother Chang’an, don’t you think you’re being a little too cautious?"
Sun Yang couldn’t help but speak up.
"We already took care of that last one. There shouldn’t be any greater threats, right?"
"Do you remember the one we ran into last night?"
Li Chang’an shot him a cold glance.
"It was even stronger than the one just now. If there’s really an Insect Hive in this area, then even stronger ones could appear at any moment!"
"Enough talk, let’s go!"
Shen Qiuyue urged from the side.
"We made too much noise. If we drag this out, something is bound to happen!"
The squad picked up their pace, quickly distancing themselves from the Insect Hive’s territory.
Just as they were about to reach the transport vehicle, a wave of heavy footsteps suddenly sounded from up ahead.
"Something else is coming!"
Bai Lin’s expression changed, and they quickly checked their terminal.
"There are quite a few—at least three enhanced types from the Insect Race!"
"Damn it!"
Li Chang’an gritted his teeth.
"Everyone, prepare for battle! Bai Lin, contact the base and request backup immediately!"
Bai Lin nodded, quickly operating their terminal to send a request for backup.
"Signal sent! Backup estimated to arrive in fifteen minutes!"
"Fifteen minutes?"
Han Ruoxi’s eyes widened.
"Can we hold out that long?"
"We have to, whether we can or not!"
Li Chang’an roared.
"Everyone, hold your ground! We’ll stop the enemy here and hold out until backup arrives!"
The words had barely left his mouth when three enormous members of the Insect Race charged out of the woods.
They were larger than the previous one, their eyes glowed blood-red, and their carapaces shone with a cold, metallic glint, like steel.
"Focus your attacks on the one on the left! We’ll take them down one by one!"
Li Chang’an gave the order and simultaneously charged forward, his Saw Chain Sword hacking viciously at the leg of the leftmost Insect.
The Insect cried out in pain, roaring as it raised a forelimb and swung at Li Chang’an.
He swiftly dodged aside, simultaneously directing his squad to attack.
Sun Yang’s Pulse Gun fired nonstop, its Energy Bullets precisely striking the target’s chest and joints.
Han Ruoxi stood in the rear, launching continuous arcs of electricity from her hands that struck the Insect’s head and back, attempting to paralyze its movements.
"The one on the right is getting close!"
Shen Qiuyue suddenly shouted. She blocked another Insect’s attack with her sword, the force of the blow knocking her back several steps.
"I’ll take it!"
Li Chang’an quickly adjusted his position and charged toward the Insect on the right, swinging his Saw Chain Sword again and precisely striking its shoulder.
The battle grew more intense, and every second felt like hovering on the line between life and death.
The squad members’ stamina was draining fast, but everyone gritted their teeth, not daring to relax for an instant.
Finally, the transport vehicle carrying the backup team appeared in the distance. Several fully-armed soldiers jumped out and quickly joined the battle.
"Backup’s here! Keep up the pressure!"
Li Chang’an bellowed.
With the assistance of the support team’s firepower, the last few members of the Insect Race were finally killed.
The clearing was covered in green insect blood and severed limbs. The air was thick with a putrid stench.
"Everyone, report casualties!"
Li Chang’an said, panting heavily as he scanned the area.
"No casualties, but we’re all about to collapse from exhaustion!"
Sun Yang wiped the sweat from his forehead.
"That was a really close call!"
"Good thing backup arrived when they did!"
Han Ruoxi sat on the ground, leaning against a rock and gasping for breath.
"Otherwise, we really would’ve bought the farm back there!"
"Don’t relax. We’re not completely safe yet!"
Li Chang’an glanced at the backup Captain.
"We’ve figured out the situation at the Insect Hive. The rest is up to you. We’re pulling out!"
The backup Captain nodded.
"Don’t worry, leave this to us.
Your mission was a success. Go on back!"
Li Chang’an called for his teammates to get up, and he led the Insect Hunter Squad away from the battlefield.
On the way back, everyone was silent, their faces etched with exhaustion.
By the time they returned to base, the sky was already beginning to grow light.
The members of the Insect Hunter Squad dragged their exhausted bodies toward the dorms, no one with the energy to speak.
"Brother Chang’an, that mission was brutal!"
Han Ruoxi said in a low voice, walking at the rear of the group.
"Will there be more missions like this?"
"There will be."
Li Chang’an said flatly.
"And they’ll probably be even more dangerous."
Back in their dorm, the entire Insect Hunter Squad seemed to fall apart, collapsing wherever they could find a spot.
Li Chang’an had just leaned his Saw Chain Sword against the wall when Sun Yang was already flopping onto his bed, draped over the covers like a puddle of mud.
"I’m spent. The only reason we made it back alive from that gig is pure, dumb luck!"
Sun Yang mumbled, lying motionless on the bed.
"Can we please take fewer of these meat-grinder missions? I’d rather be chopping vegetables in logistics!"
"That’s easy for you to say!"
Han Ruoxi took a sip of water, sitting on the floor and leaning against the side of the bed.
"You, chop vegetables? I doubt you could even peel a potato properly. You’d be more useful as a meal for the Insect Race!"
"Hey, hey, hey, no need to be so harsh!"
Sun Yang pointed a finger at her playfully.
"You think all I know is how to fight and kill? Let me tell you, I was the master chef of my family back in the day! My cooking is way better than what those guys in the mess hall whip up!"
"You’re certainly good at bragging!"
Han Ruoxi rolled her eyes at him and tossed her empty water bottle into the trash can.
"Then cook for us someday and show us just how great you are!"
"You’re on! Next time we have a day without a mission, I’ll show you what I’ve got!"
