Chapter 1652: Chapter 1596: The Counterpart in the Spoiled Group 26
Anning and Xiao Yuan talked about Zhang Xiaoyu after they went back.
Anning asked Xiao Yuan, "How did Zhang Xiaoyu end up with your brother? That girl is quite shrewd, what does she see in your brother?"
Xiao Yuan replied while washing his face, "What else could it be? She probably liked my brother’s looks."
To be honest, the three Xiao brothers all look pretty good. Xiao Yuan is the best-looking one, Xiao Feng is also quite alright—tall, a bit dark-skinned, but he has a strong physique and a righteous appearance with those thick eyebrows and big eyes. Out of the three brothers, Xiao Lei is the least attractive. He’s not very tall, maybe just about 170 cm or so, looks very thin, and his features aren’t as handsome as Xiao Feng’s or Xiao Yuan’s.
Xiao Feng looks good, but Zhang Xiaoyu’s appearance is rather unimpressive.
That girl isn’t tall, perhaps just over 150 cm, with a plump and rounded figure, large-framed with flesh aplenty, a broad face, and small eyes that squint into slits when she laughs.
Anning thought about Zhang Xiaoyu’s appearance and then about Xiao Feng’s looks, and finally understood why Zhang Xiaoyu liked Xiao Feng despite knowing that the Xiao Family’s condition wasn’t great.
After Xiao Yuan washed his face, Anning handed him a towel, then went to find Anjing to gossip.
"Second sister, do you know? Zhang Xiaoyu has hooked up with Xiao Yuan’s older brother."
Anjing looked curious: "Really? Why haven’t I heard anything from her?"
"Guess it wasn’t certain before," Anning grabbed a handful of roasted peanuts, sat on Anjing’s bed, and peeled as she spoke, "When she arrived today, I was a bit surprised. From their looks, she and Xiao Feng seem quite satisfied with each other and might even have a wedding before the year ends."
While the two sisters were talking, An Xian came into the room.
She looked annoyed, sat down, and said with frustration, "I’m so pissed off! That Yang Family, really..."
"What’s the matter?" Anning handed An Xian a handful of peanuts, "What’s the Yang Family done now?"
An Xian peeled some peanut beans: "Our family planted greenhouse vegetables, now they’re copying us. Today Yang Baotian went to town and bought a lot of materials, and Yang Baolin is looking for people to help set up the greenhouse."
Anning burst into laughter: "Sis, why are you angry? It’s impossible for only our family to plant greenhouse vegetables, right? If we can plant them, others can too. The Yang Family is planting this year, and who knows, maybe next year the whole village will plant them seeing how we made money."
"Next year is next year’s concern. Our family just started planting this year; whether we make a profit or a loss is still unknown, yet they’re rushing to plant? Aren’t they trying to compete with us?"
An Xian got even angrier: "I knew their whole family couldn’t stand us having even a little advantage."
Anning chuckled more: "Then let’s not be angry. We can afford a loss with greenhouse vegetables; can they?"
An Xian paused, dumbfounded.
Then she thought, indeed, that was the case.
Her sister had made a lot of money in Dream City; the investment in greenhouse vegetables was nothing to her. Even if they lost it all, it wouldn’t hurt. But the Yang Family? Just planting greenhouse vegetables, and they’re likely exhausting all their resources. If they lose, now that’s entertainment.
Thinking this way, An Xian wasn’t angry anymore.
Anning added, "Do they really think greenhouse vegetables are easy to grow? Just because you can plant in spring and summer doesn’t mean you can in winter. There’s a lot to learn, let them stew over it once they start planting."
An Xian’s eyes brightened: "Is there some trick to it?"
Anning smiled mysteriously: "You’ll understand later."
Lately, Anning looked for Pei Laoshi: "Dad, let’s buy a truck."
Pei Laoshi was squatting under the eaves, cracking melon seeds at the time. Hearing about buying a car, he dropped his seeds everywhere: "Buy a car? For what?"
Anning laughed, "For what else? To sell vegetables! We’re growing short-term cycle vegetables like chives, fennel, spinach, etc., and soon they’ll be ready for harvest. We’ll need to sell them. We’re the first around here to plant greenhouse vegetables, and in the first year, if we don’t sell them, who will come to buy? Besides, I’m thinking they won’t fetch a good price in the county, better to take them to the City or Provincial City where people don’t farm and buy their greens—I’m sure they’d love to buy some fresh, green vegetables."
That’s true. Pei Laoshi figured city folks have money, and instead of buying cabbage and radish, they’d prefer to buy their family’s greens.
"Who’s going to drive? Who’s going to sell?"
Anning sat down: "Xiao Yuan has a driver’s license. He initially thought of driving for someone, but for selling vegetables, he and I will go; we could also ask second sister’s husband to help if needed."
Pei Laoshi never managed anything himself and preferred to avoid hassle. As long as he had food and drink, he’d rather think less. Besides, the money was Anning’s, she could spend it as she liked.
"If you’ve decided, then go buy it."
Anning came out from talking with Pei Laoshi and after dinner told An Xian, "We’re going to the city to buy a truck tomorrow, wanna come with us?"
An Xian promptly agreed: "Definitely going, I want to see if the Yang Family will follow suit when we buy a truck."
Anjing came over with a visible belly and wanted to go too upon hearing about the car.
Anning gave her a once-over: "Don’t even think about it."
Since they were heading to the city to buy a car, An Xian was especially excited. She got up early the next day before Liu Dalian and prepared breakfast, then stood by the window calling Anning to wake up.
Anning quickly dressed, washed, and got ready.
Xiao Yuan, hearing the commotion, got up quickly too.
The three of them ate breakfast while it was still not completely light outside, but An Xian kept urging to leave quickly.
Xiao Yuan was still riding the borrowed old motorcycle, taking Anning and An Xian to town to catch a bus.
The bus journey was wobbly all the way to the county, then they changed buses to the City, and without wasting time went straight to the car market.
Xiao Yuan had prepared before buying the car, consulted with various veteran drivers about car brands and performance, and at the car market directly picked a locally popular car.
Having selected the car, they proceeded with the payment and paperwork, got a temporary license plate, and had to drive back to the county to pay taxes and register the vehicle.
None of them ate lunch, they drove back to the county to queue for tax payment, followed by license registration.
Once everything was done, driving back home, it was nearly dark.
As Xiao Yuan drove into the village, a crowd gathered instantly, intrigued.
Parking outside the Pei Family’s house, oh wow, half the village turned up to see the big truck.
An Xian jumped out of the car, ran inside, and shouted, "Mom, mom, is there anything to eat? I’m starving."
Liu Dalian was cooking and upon hearing An Xian, quickly handed her two peach pastries: "Have a couple first; dinner will be ready soon."
Even Pei Laoshi started feeling proud, stepping out with an enamel mug full of hot tea.
"Nah, we ain’t got that much money, basically exhausted our resources."
He smiled while greeted and chatted with people there: "I wasn’t keen on buying it, but the kids insisted—said you have to consider selling the vegetables once grown, hitting both in terms of convenience. Rather than hiring someone to transport veggies, why not buy a truck directly and handle it ourselves for better margins."
"Then you’ve bought the truck, must find a driver?"
Someone asked Pei Laoshi.
Pei Laoshi felt even prouder: "Anning’s fiancé has a license, he can drive. No need to hire a driver. Since he can drive, buying the truck isn’t a loss. If worst comes to worst, he could drive and haul goods for people, in a year or so, we’ll recoup the cost."
That made sense.
Quite a few people nodded along; a truck is practical, not just for family use but also useful in hauling goods for others, which earns quite a bit each trip. With this realization, people thought Pei Anning indeed was sharp, and maybe the Pei Family’s fortunes were about to improve.
