Chapter 144: Chapter 144: I Won’t Harm You
"Danna," Yvette Brooks called to her from across Chance.
Shannon Lynn turned her head stiffly to look at her.
Yvette Brooks thought she looked odd. Frowning, she got up and walked over. "Danna, are you not feeling well?"
"No." Shannon Lynn shook her head, forcing a weak smile. "I-I’m fine."
"Alright." Yvette Brooks didn’t press the issue and leaned in to whisper in her ear, "I think it’s a bit stuffy in here. I’m going to head home first."
Shannon Lynn’s mind was in turmoil. She slowly reached out her hand.
She grabbed her best friend’s wrist and pleaded, "Vivi, it’s still early. Let’s hang out a little longer. Vince and I can take you home later."
Yvette Brooks’s face fell. "But I want to go home now."
"Are you saying I’m not your friend?" Shannon Lynn feigned anger.
"Of course not," Yvette Brooks explained. "Danna, you’re my best friend."
A flash of guilt crossed Shannon Lynn’s heart. She stood up and hugged her, her voice full of pleading, "Vivi, you’re the best to me. Please stay and keep me company, okay?"
Helpless, Yvette Brooks could only nod in agreement. "Alright, I’ll stay with you for another hour."
She opened her phone and checked the time. "I’m leaving at eleven-thirty."
"Okay." A smile appeared on Shannon Lynn’s face. "An hour is enough."
Yvette Brooks sat down beside her, idly playing on her phone.
Seeing her sit down, Vince wrapped his arm around Shannon Lynn again, his lips brushing against her ear. "My baby did so well. As a reward, I’ll delete one of your nudes."
His proximity made Shannon Lynn shudder.
Vince chuckled lowly. "What are you trembling for? That excited?"
Shannon Lynn clenched her fists and took a deep breath. "Didn’t you say you were going to delete a photo?"
"Right." Vince took out his phone, unlocked it, and deleted a photo. He raised an eyebrow. "Satisfied?"
Shannon Lynn’s face was grim as she remained silent.
"Hold out your hand," Vince said coolly.
After a moment’s hesitation, Shannon Lynn held out her palm.
Vince placed a small white pill in her palm and whispered, "Your friend only drinks what you pour for her. The rest is up to you."
Shannon Lynn clenched her fist around the white pill.
Probably due to nervousness, a thin layer of sweat beaded on her forehead.
Shannon Lynn turned back to look at Yvette Brooks, who was still on her phone, and her heart was once again torn by hesitation.
A moment later, Shannon Lynn turned away, dropped the white pill Vince had given her into the wine bottle, then poured a glass and handed it to Yvette Brooks.
"Vivi, are you thirsty?"
The gossiping mosquito, having witnessed this scene, flew off again to chat with its friends.
"Oh my god, that female human is going to harm her own best friend!"
"What’s happening? Quick, tell me!"
"I was about to have a meal on that male human, but I got shooed away. So I was just waiting for another chance, and you’ll never believe what I saw!"
The gossiping mosquito sighed. "That female human put a white pellet into the wine bottle, and then..."
The mosquitoes’ conversation once again reached Renee Jennings’s ears.
She frowned and turned her head to look at Yvette Brooks again.
She was playing on her phone, while her friend, Shannon Lynn, watched her with a hint of apology in her eyes.
The next second, Shannon Lynn picked up the wine glass and offered it to Yvette Brooks, coaxing with a smile, "Vivi, you’re leaving soon anyway. Just have a little sip."
Since she’d put it that way, Yvette Brooks felt it would be rude to refuse again.
She took the glass, and just as her lips touched the rim, a clear, cold voice suddenly rang out.
"Don’t drink it!"
Yvette Brooks heard the voice and lifted her eyes to look.
Seeing that it was Renee speaking, a smile touched her lips. She explained, "Renee, it’s fine. My bestie Danna poured this for me."
Renee glanced at the wary-looking Shannon Lynn beside her and said coolly, "It doesn’t matter if your bestie poured it. You still can’t drink it."
"What do you mean by that?" Shannon Lynn demanded, her face full of displeasure. "Are you trying to drive a wedge between us?"
Yvette Brooks frowned in confusion. "Why would you say that?"
"Yvette." Sylvia Brooks came to Renee’s side, looking seriously at her cousin. "Listen to Renee. She wouldn’t harm you."
"Sylvia Brooks!" Shannon Lynn snapped. "Vivi is an adult! She can think for herself! Does she need her cousin’s permission just to have a drink? Stop trying to control everything she does!"
"Don’t be so unreasonable," Sylvia Brooks said with a frown, speechless at her behavior.
Yvette Brooks quickly interjected, "Hey, don’t fight. It’s just a small thing."
"It’s not a small thing," Sylvia Brooks said, her face darkening.
Renee spoke up as well. "You consider Shannon Lynn your best friend, but what about her?"
"What about me?" Shannon Lynn looked at Renee with a hint of hostility. "I consider her my best friend too! What do you know that gives you the right to spout such nonsense here!"
"We’re saying this because we do know something," Renee said calmly.
Shannon Lynn’s heart skipped a beat. A strange, ominous feeling washed over her. "What?"
Renee’s gaze fell on the wine bottle in front of Shannon. "What did you put in the wine?"
"What ’what’ did I put in?" Shannon Lynn could only play dumb. "I don’t know what you’re talking about."
Renee raised an eyebrow slightly. "It’s alright. We’ll know for sure once we have it tested."
Shannon Lynn’s expression changed drastically. She scowled, "You’re being ridiculous!"
With that, she grabbed the wine bottle and poured out its contents. "See? Is there anything in here? There’s nothing!"
"What are you afraid of?" Renee sneered. "The moment I mention getting the wine tested, you rush to pour it out. Guilty conscience?"
"That’s not it!" Shannon Lynn retorted, her eyes darting around. "You’re the ones who said I put something in the wine, so I’m just proving to you that I didn’t!"
Sylvia Brooks’s expression was ice-cold. "The glass in Yvette’s hand was poured from that bottle. We’ll use her glass for the test."
Yvette Brooks, who hadn’t yet processed what was happening, blinked and looked down at the wine in her hand.
The next second, a hand shot out and snatched the glass from her.
Yvette Brooks turned her head to look at Shannon Lynn, a look of astonishment on her face.
With a grim face, Shannon Lynn poured out the wine. "Did you get a good look? What’s in here? Nothing at all!"
"Danna..." Yvette Brooks murmured. "Is there really something wrong with the wine?"
She wasn’t an idiot. After seeing Shannon Lynn do that, what was there left not to understand?
"No!" Shannon Lynn grabbed her hand, explaining frantically, "Vivi, you have to believe me. You’re my best friend, I would never harm you."
"I..." Yvette Brooks pressed her lips together, not knowing what to say.
She glanced at Shannon Lynn, pulled her hand away, and said, "I’m going home."
Yvette Brooks walked over to Renee, her voice tinged with panic. "I’m not drinking with them anymore. Can I leave with you guys?"
"Let’s go," Renee nodded.
"Vivi!" Shannon Lynn cried out uneasily. "Are you abandoning me as your best friend?"
