Chapter 358: Chapter 358: Might as Well Buy Some Poison and Kill the Dog
Tori Lynn was still wondering if there was a problem with Jean, but Yvette Brooks had already cheerfully agreed.
"Oh, great! Let’s all chat! Should we talk here?"
"My friends are over there." Renee Jennings pointed to a nearby table. "Should we go over there and talk?"
"Great idea! Let’s go!" Yvette Brooks nodded instantly and patted the still-dazed Tori Lynn. "Tori?"
"Huh? What’s going on?" Tori Lynn asked, snapping out of her daze.
Yvette Brooks said, "Renee Jennings has friends over there. She invited us to join them for a chat."
"Okay." Tori Lynn nodded and took the stroller from Jean.
When Jean started to follow them, Tori Lynn spoke up before Renee Jennings could. "Jean, why don’t you sit here and rest for a while?"
"Then I can watch Lele."
"It’s alright. You get some rest."
Tori Lynn walked between Renee Jennings and Yvette Brooks, pushing the stroller.
Owen trotted behind them, but not before turning back to let out a bark at Jean.
Jean’s eyes turned sinister as she glared back viciously.
’Stupid dog. Why don’t you get hit by a car and die.’
Michelle Fuller was a little surprised to see Yvette Brooks as well. "It’s you, right? My cousin, Summer? I didn’t misremember, did I?"
"You remembered!" Yvette Brooks beamed. "You have a great memory."
Michelle Fuller said humbly, "Oh, it’s nothing special. I’m Michelle Fuller. And you are?"
"I’m Yvette Brooks." Yvette then made the introductions. "This is my bestie, Tori Lynn, this is her son, Lele, and their dog, Owen."
"Hi, Tori, I’m Michelle Fuller." She extended a hand to Tori Lynn. "And this is my grandpa."
Tori Lynn and Yvette Brooks hurried to greet Mr. Fuller.
"Hello, Mr. Fuller!"
Lele was awake now, sitting quietly in his stroller.
"Hi there, Lele." Michelle Fuller waved at him, then turned to the dog next to them. "And hello to you, Owen. I have a Golden Retriever at home, too."
"Heh heh." Owen grinned to greet her. "Hello, lady."
Once the greetings were over, everyone took their seats.
Tori Lynn looked at Renee Jennings, her heart pounding with anxiety. "Miss Jennings, can you... can you really communicate with Owen?"
Before Renee Jennings could answer, Owen barked first. "Yes! We can!"
Renee Jennings’s lips curled, a flicker of amusement in her eyes. "Owen’s right. We can."
Hearing this, Tori Lynn’s expression turned serious. "Miss Jennings, could you please tell me what Owen is saying?"
Renee Jennings’s bright eyes narrowed slightly. She cut straight to the chase. "There’s a problem with the nanny you hired. You can’t keep using her."
"There’s really a problem with Jean?" Tori Lynn frowned, glancing in Jean’s direction. "What is it?"
Renee Jennings said, "Owen told me that Jean once took Lele to her home without your permission."
"That’s right." Tori Lynn nodded. "I was furious. I demanded that she bring Lele back immediately."
"And what was the nanny’s attitude then?"
Tori Lynn recalled the incident from two months prior. "She kept apologizing and sending me videos of Lele. She said she just adored him and wanted to let him experience nature and get some fresh air."
"Then she brought Lele back, got on her knees in front of me, and cried, begging me to forgive her."
Renee Jennings asked, "I heard you even apologized to her?"
"Yes." Tori Lynn nodded. "Jean was afraid I wouldn’t forgive her, so she kept slapping her own face."
Michelle Fuller’s face instantly twisted in disgust. "What is she, psycho?"
Renee Jennings also wore an indescribable expression. "She was guilt-tripping you."
"Now that I think about it, you’re right." Tori Lynn said, frustrated with herself. "I didn’t realize it at the time. She’s around my mom’s age, and seeing her kneeling in front of me... I felt terrible. The second she slapped herself, I panicked and ended up apologizing to *her*."
Yvette Brooks’s expression grew stern. "Hold on, Tori. Why didn’t you tell me about something this major?"
"You were away on vacation. I didn’t want to ruin your fun," Tori Lynn explained.
"You can’t do that again." Yvette Brooks was getting angry. "If I had known that Jean... that hag... was pulling stunts like that, I would’ve made you fire her ages ago!"
As she said this, she seemed to remember something, and her expression changed dramatically. "Wait a second. Didn’t she just offer to take Lele to her place if we went on that trip?"
Tori Lynn pressed her lips together and managed a difficult nod. A horrible thought exploded in her mind. "Don’t tell me she’s..."
"Exactly." Renee Jennings lowered her voice. "Owen says she’s planning to sell Lele. The last time she took him home, she’d already negotiated the price with a buyer."
"Owen was terrified Lele would be sold, so he lunged at them to stop it, but they knocked him out." Renee Jennings didn’t leave out this crucial detail; Owen had been trying his best to protect his little master.
"What?" Tori Lynn’s face went deathly pale. A look of pure terror filled her eyes, and a wave of delayed fear washed over her, making her fingertips tremble.
She glanced at a miserable-looking Owen, then over to Lele, and a cold sweat instantly snaked down her back.
’Lele and Owen almost didn’t make it back!’
"That’s horrifying!" Goosebumps erupted on Yvette Brooks’s arms. "Thank God Lele and Owen are alright!"
Mr. Fuller looked at the little one in the stroller, his heart also filled with relief.
"I suspect the first time she brought Lele back was to get you to lower your guard," Renee Jennings analyzed in a low voice. "If you had gone on your trip and actually left Lele with her this time, the consequences..."
Tori Lynn couldn’t even bear to imagine it. Her expression grim, she clenched her fists and snarled through gritted teeth, "That despicable woman!"
"So what do we do now?" Yvette Brooks asked.
Renee had brought them over here specifically so they wouldn’t tip off their target.
’This woman, Jean, couldn’t be working alone. She must have a whole team behind her.’
"For now, keep the nanny calm," Renee Jennings said softly. "I’ll contact the police."
"So I can’t call the police to have her arrested right away?" Tori Lynn asked.
"Correct." Renee Jennings looked at her, her expression earnest. "You have to treat her just like you always do. Don’t let her sense that anything is off. Can you do that?"
Tori Lynn pressed her lips together and nodded grimly. "I can do it."
’In a way, Renee Jennings had saved her.’
’If Renee hadn’t warned her, she might have actually let her guard down and completely trusted Jean, letting her take Lele home.’
Tori Lynn made a vow to herself. ’From now on, no one but the most important people in her life would ever be allowed to take Lele away.’
"Owen." She looked down at the dog sitting beside her and stroked his head. "I’m so sorry. Mommy was wrong to blame you. Thank you for being so brave and protecting Lele."
"I don’t blame you." Owen shook his head. "It’s my job to protect Lele and Mommy."
Jean sat a short distance away, eating a pastry while staring at Renee Jennings’s table, an anxious itch crawling under her skin.
’What the hell are those little bitches whispering about over there?’
’So damn annoying. Tori Lynn was just about to agree to let me take Lele, and then that stupid dog started acting up again.’
’If all else fails, I’ll just buy some poison and kill the dog!’
