Chapter 406: Chapter 406: Phoebe Sterling, Let’s Get a Divorce.
Orion saw Rainbow Mom sprawled on top of a man. Her hair was damp with sweat and stuck to her cheeks, and her face was even redder than Orion’s own.
Orion looked at the man again. ’He’s not as handsome as Rainbow Dad,’ it thought.
The man’s large hands were on Rainbow Mom’s waist, and he let out a wild, smug laugh. "So, who’s better? Me or him?"
Rainbow Mom laughed. "Do you even have to ask? Of course, you’re better... In my heart, you’ve always been number one."
In the living room, Rainbow Dad was slumped on the sofa. The hands resting on his knees slowly clenched into fists. His breathing grew heavy, and his expression was as dark as a thundercloud.
Orion left the bedroom and flew back to him, shaking its head in sympathy. "Your wife is about to become someone else’s wife!"
’On TV, when this happens, doesn’t the husband usually charge in and start throwing punches?’
Although Rainbow Dad couldn’t understand Orion, he gave the parrot a bitter smile. "Orion, what do you think I should do?"
Orion squawked, "Go beat them up!"
Rainbow Dad didn’t move, still as a statue.
Outside on the balcony, the twilight faded away, dissolving into the inky blackness of night.
Rainbow Dad was completely enveloped in darkness.
Orion had already fallen asleep on its perch.
"I’m so tired... and hungry," Rainbow Mom’s voice drifted out. "Are you hungry?"
"Is that because I was too much for you?" the man asked.
Rainbow Mom said with a playful pout, "You know the answer! Let’s go get something to eat!"
Footsteps drew near. With a CLICK, the pitch-black living room was flooded with light.
"I wonder what we should eat..." Rainbow Mom raised a hand to rub her neck, but her voice died in her throat.
She stared at the man sitting in the living room. Her pupils contracted. A sense of dread washed over her, and a chill exploded through her veins, as if her blood was flowing in reverse.
The man behind her, oblivious, wrapped an arm around her waist. "I could eat you."
Rainbow Mom struggled to get the words out. "You... When did you get back?"
Her eyes fell on the grocery bag filled with meat and vegetables on the coffee table, and her heart sank into the pit of her stomach.
Rainbow Dad didn’t say a word. He tilted his head, his gaze landing on the hand at her waist before moving slowly, deliberately, to the man it belonged to.
He stared at the vaguely familiar face as memories that had been sealed away for years suddenly flooded his mind. He let out a bitter, self-mocking laugh. "So that’s how it is."
Rainbow Mom’s face was pale, her eyes filled with panic and dread. "Sonny..."
The man standing behind her spoke up. "Sonny. Long time no see. You’ve taken good care of Phoenix."
Scott Conway’s face was grim. He stared coldly at the man—his wife’s first love, Troy Warren.
Years ago, Troy Warren had broken up with Phoebe Sterling to go abroad.
Phoebe Sterling had been heartbroken for a long time. It was Scott Conway who had stayed by her side, helping her move on from her sorrow and emerge from the darkness.
He had spent two years trying everything to win her over before she finally agreed to be with him.
After eighteen years of marriage, he had thought their little family of three would live happily ever after.
He never imagined that on a quiet evening, his wife would cheat on him—in their own home, in their own bed—with the very same first love who had once abandoned her.
Scott Conway felt like the past eighteen years of his life had been a ridiculous farce.
He looked at his wife and asked softly, "In your heart, what am I to you?"
Phoebe Sterling couldn’t meet his gaze. Her eyes darted away. "Sonny, let me explain..."
"Fine." Scott Conway nodded. "Explain."
His reaction was not what Phoebe Sterling had expected. She opened her mouth, but couldn’t find the words.
"Sonny, don’t blame Phoenix," Troy Warren interjected. "It’s my fault. I’m the one who seduced her."
"I wasn’t asking you," Scott Conway said, his voice flat and his eyes filled with disgust.
"Sonny, don’t be like that," Phoebe Sterling said quickly.
Scott Conway’s gaze fell on her face. After a moment of silent contemplation, he swung his fist into Troy Warren’s face.
"Sonny!" Phoebe Sterling screamed, rushing to get between them. "Sonny, stop it!"
Scott Conway didn’t stop. He wanted to see what she would do—the woman he had pursued for two years, dated for three, and been married to for eighteen.
Terrified that Troy Warren would get hurt, Phoebe Sterling saw Scott Conway raise his fist again and sank her teeth into his arm.
The sudden, sharp pain shocked Scott Conway’s chaotic mind into stark clarity.
He looked down at the bright red teeth marks on his arm, and the fury in his eyes subsided, replaced by a chilling calm.
Phoebe Sterling knelt beside Troy Warren, her face a mask of anxiety and concern. "Joel, are you okay? Does it hurt?"
His wife’s gentle words were like a merciless blade, each one a slow, agonizing cut to his heart.
Troy Warren took her hand and shook his head weakly. "I’m fine, Phoenix. I deserved that."
Phoebe Sterling shook her head vehemently. "Joel, don’t say that."
Scott Conway turned and walked silently to the study.
Orion watched as Phoebe Sterling helped Troy Warren to the sofa, cooing softly as she tended to his injuries.
But in the blink of an eye, the two of them were kissing again.
It quickly turned away, squawking a line it had picked up from television: "Hard to watch."
After seeing Troy Warren out, Phoebe Sterling sat on the sofa for a moment before getting up and heading to the study to find her husband.
Scott Conway stood at the window, staring into the deep night, his heart a tangled mess of agony.
All his years of tender care still couldn’t compare to Troy Warren.
In Phoebe Sterling’s heart, he was nothing.
She didn’t love him. She didn’t even care about him.
KNOCK KNOCK—
A knock came from the other side of the study door.
He remained silent. The knocking came again.
This time, Phoebe Sterling pushed the door open and entered the study, calling out softly, "Sonny."
Scott Conway’s back was to her. He didn’t react.
Phoebe Sterling wrung her hands nervously. "Sonny, please, let me explain. That day, Troy and I just meant to get together, have a meal, and catch up. We didn’t expect... we both got drunk..."
Scott Conway closed his eyes. He turned to face her, his voice chillingly calm. "You were drunk that day. What about today?"
Phoebe Sterling was speechless.
Scott Conway let out a self-deprecating laugh. "It’s not just that you don’t have me in your heart. You don’t even respect our home. You actually brought him here, into our house... into our bedroom, our bed..."
Phoebe Sterling lowered her head, choking back a sob. "Sonny, I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean for this to happen."
"I’ll ask you one question," Scott Conway said, his eyes turning to ice. "In your heart, who is more important: me, or Troy Warren?"
Phoebe Sterling hesitated for a moment before finally speaking. "Sonny, of course you’re very important to me..."
"Don’t bother." Scott Conway cut her off. "I already have my answer. Phoebe Sterling, let’s get a divorce."
"Do you really want a divorce?" Phoebe Sterling asked.
"Yes."
"Alright."
She agreed so readily.
The bitter irony in Scott Conway’s eyes deepened, and his heart felt as if it had plunged into an icy abyss.
He took a deep breath. "But I have one condition."
"Are you going to make me leave with nothing?" Phoebe Sterling asked instinctively.
