Chapter 431: Chapter 431: No One Can Understand Your Pain
Penny Thorne didn’t expect Sean Quinn’s wife to remain so calm after hearing all that.
She tried to stop her and say more, but Sean’s wife was already pushing the stroller briskly toward the apartment building.
Sean Quinn pursed his lips and asked softly, "Could you get me a glass of water?"
"Of course." Renee Jennings stood and filled a disposable cup with warm water for him.
After drinking the water, Sean Quinn seemed to be in a trance. "When my wife got home, she didn’t ask me a single thing. But her attitude toward me became subtly distant."
He lowered his gaze and gave a self-deprecating laugh. "Our feelings for each other weren’t that deep, so even when she grew distant, I didn’t ask why. I thought Penny Thorne would finally be out of my life for good, but I never expected..."
When Sean’s wife was downstairs with the baby, Penny Thorne appeared before her again.
Sean’s wife didn’t want to engage with her. The whole situation was unsettling, but she and Sean were already married. It seemed pointless to drag it all up with him, as it would only strain their already fragile relationship.
"Too scared to listen?" Penny Thorne’s face was a mask of mockery. "You and Sean met on a blind date, didn’t you? Back then, I wasn’t ready to get married, so he gave me an ultimatum. He said if I wouldn’t marry him, he’d just find someone else and marry them instead."
Sean’s wife frowned, displeased. "What is it you want?"
"I want you to give Sean back to me," Penny Thorne said, as if it were the most natural thing in the world. "He’s been in love with me since junior high. He paid my tuition, moved out of his family’s home to live with me, and took care of my every need—my clothes, my housing, everything."
"His parents doted on me like their own daughter. They covered all my expenses for four years of college and bought me a car as a graduation present."
"And that’s not all. His parents were even planning to move to Haelon for my sake and buy a house for Sean and me, paid in full..."
Sean’s wife, both irritated and furious, snapped, "Why are you telling me all this?"
"To make you back off, of course," Penny Thorne said with a radiant smile. "Sean doesn’t love you. What’s the point of living with a man who doesn’t love you? How pathetic can you be, sticking with a man whose heart belongs to another woman?"
"You..." Sean’s wife felt as if she had been slapped, her face stinging.
Penny Thorne crossed her arms, her face dripping with contempt. "If you had any shame, you’d divorce him now. Even if you don’t, you’ll have to eventually."
These words deeply troubled Sean’s wife, leaving her heartbroken.
’Even if I don’t divorce him now, I’ll have to eventually...’
Evelyn Sawyer spent several sleepless nights turning it over in her mind.
She eventually asked her mother to look after the baby, secretly consulted a lawyer, and asked Sean for a divorce the very next day. She wanted to do it while she was still nursing, as it would give her a better chance of keeping custody of their child.
Sean couldn’t understand why Evelyn suddenly wanted a divorce. He tried to change her mind several times, but she was adamant, so he had no choice but to agree.
Only later did he learn that Evelyn had asked for a divorce because of Penny Thorne’s meddling.
Sean was furious, but he also felt ashamed and guilty toward Evelyn.
He went to Evelyn to explain, telling her the whole story about the Quinn family and Penny Thorne.
Evelyn was shocked that Penny could be so heartless and ungrateful, not only trampling on Sean’s devotion but also betraying the Quinn family’s kindness.
She felt deep sympathy and sorrow for what Sean had gone through, and their relationship began to deepen.
When Sean proposed they remarry, Evelyn naturally agreed.
As the memory concluded, a gentle expression washed over Sean’s face. "My wife... she was a truly gentle and kind person."
Both Renee Jennings and Sawyer frowned, remembering the "divorced" status in his file.
"So did you... remarry in the end?" Renee Jennings asked cautiously.
Sean’s expression changed in an instant, his face contorting in pain. "Somehow, Penny Thorne found out we were getting remarried. She drove her car... and ran over my wife and child!"
Renee’s heart clenched at his words, her eyes beginning to sting.
’How could Penny Thorne be so insane...’
’Sean had done so much for her, yet she repaid his kindness with such cruelty!’
"The spot where my wife and child were hit was a surveillance blind spot. They couldn’t get a license plate or see the driver, but I know it was Penny Thorne!" Sean snarled through gritted teeth. "But there wasn’t enough evidence, so the law couldn’t touch her!"
"So you killed her?" Sawyer asked.
"Killed her?" Sean suddenly laughed, a crazed light in his bloodshot eyes. "That would have been letting her off too easy."
Renee’s slender brows furrowed. "What did you do to her?"
"Tortured her, of course." Sean tilted his head back, staring at the ceiling as he laughed. "Made her live a life that was neither human nor ghost. That’s so much more painful than death."
Renee looked at him, her expression complex. "So, were you so traumatized by Penny Thorne’s cruelty that you started killing innocent people?"
"Those girls deserved to die!" Sean Quinn shrugged, unconcerned.
"What you went through was a terrible tragedy, and no one can fully understand your pain," Renee sighed softly. "But that doesn’t mean you should have turned from a victim into a perpetrator."
"Why shouldn’t I have?" Sean said dismissively. "Penny Thorne destroyed my family, and she got to walk free, didn’t she?"
Renee opened her mouth to speak, but for a moment, she was at a loss for words.
"Those girls do nothing but complain day in and day out." Sean’s tone was thick with scorn. "They go on about how much they’re suffering, how wronged they are, as if the whole world owes them something. But what’s the reality? They’re doing just fine. They’re just as disgusting as Penny Thorne."
"How many times have you done this?" Renee asked.
Sean laughed. "I’ve lost count."
"Did you ever think about the consequences?" Renee’s expression was grim. "Those victims aren’t Penny Thorne. They aren’t like her. They’re innocent!"
"Innocent?" Sean shook his head, his eyes cold. "As I see it, they aren’t innocent at all! Any one of them could become another Penny Thorne. I’m enacting justice. I’m saving other people from them!"
"Have you ever seen a psychiatrist?" Sawyer spoke up.
Sean narrowed his eyes. "What’s that supposed to mean? You think I’m sick?"
Neither Renee Jennings nor Sawyer answered, but the look on their faces was answer enough.
"Those girls who go around crying about how miserable they are, making themselves out to be so helpless and pitiful—they’re not innocent at all!" Sean’s gaze was sharp, his tone resolute. "Only girls like my wife, girls who come from happy, healthy families, are capable of genuine love."
"Your mind is sick. Your prejudice against these girls runs too deep." Renee frowned at him, her tone disapproving. "Penny Thorne’s crimes were truly monstrous, but that doesn’t give you the right to kill innocent people. In your quest for revenge, you’ve destroyed countless other families."
"Is that right?" Sean’s eyes suddenly went vacant as he muttered to himself, "You’re wrong. I’m not the one who’s sick. The world is."
