Chapter 464: Chapter 464: I’ll Snatch One a Day Until They’re All Gone
"Huh?" Michelle Fuller looked astonished to hear Renee say she didn’t dare catch it. "Is there really an animal you’re afraid to catch, Renee?"
"There is." Renee’s tone suddenly grew serious. "This is a nationally protected Class II species. If I catch it for Summer to keep as a pet, the next ones getting caught and put in a cage will be me and her."
"Ah!" Michelle Fuller exclaimed. "No way! You two can’t get locked up. If anyone’s going to be taking care of you, it should be me!"
Sylvia Brooks laughed at her comment. "Oh, Michelle, you’re so adorable."
The sudden praise made Michelle Fuller blush. "Really? Am I really that adorable?"
"You are," Sylvia Brooks said, nodding seriously. "Very adorable."
Renee pushed the window open a crack and whispered, "Hey there. What kind of falcon are you?"
In truth, she wasn’t entirely sure she could even understand the falcon’s language.
The voice of System 009 echoed in her mind: "This is a peregrine falcon. Ferocious, but its eyes are clear."
"You talking to me?" the peregrine falcon stared at her, its eyes wide and round. "You can understand me?"
Renee raised an eyebrow and breathed a sigh of relief. ’Perfect, I can understand him.’
"What are you doing here?"
Zephyr called out piercingly, "Are those fur babies outside yours?"
"They’re mine. Is there a problem?"
"A huge problem!" Zephyr squawked aggressively. "Open the window and let me in."
Upon hearing this, Renee spoke into the video call, "Michelle, Summer, you two are my witnesses. The peregrine falcon is coming in on its own. I’m not the one catching it."
Michelle Fuller’s voice piped up immediately, "No problem! I’m starting a screen recording right now to prove your innocence!"
Sylvia Brooks just kept laughing.
Renee opened the window, and Zephyr ruffled its wings and slipped inside.
It scanned the room, then with a flap of its wings, it swooped onto the bed, its talons sinking firmly into the soft comforter.
Renee: "..."
’Seriously, where are your manners? Landing on someone’s bed the first time you meet them?’
Zephyr preened its feathers with its beak before fixing its gaze on Renee. "Are you absolutely sure those fur babies are yours?"
Renee frowned, thinking to herself, ’I’m going to have to change the comforter later.’ "Positive. Why?"
"How do you even raise your pets?" Zephyr’s cry was exceptionally piercing, seemingly trying to convey its fury. "They have no manners! You want to bet I could snatch one a day and pick them all off?"
Renee blinked, her voice dripping with innocence. "What happened? I have no idea what you’re talking about."
"Hmph!" Zephyr looked like it wanted to peck her but resisted. "What kind of attitude is that?"
"What did my pets do?" Renee asked, genuinely puzzled. "Why are you saying they have no manners?"
Zephyr puffed up. "I’m a peregrine falcon, you get it?"
Renee nodded. "I know."
"But your pack of pets doesn’t know that!" Zephyr squawked, puffed up with indignation. "Day in and day out, all they do is get on my nerves!"
"Did they do something to you?" Renee asked, curious.
"Them!" Zephyr’s talons clenched tightly. "Every single time they see me, they start yelling, ’The hawk’s here, the hawk’s here!’ Unbelievable! I’m obviously a peregrine falcon!"
Renee: "..."
’So that’s why he’s so mad.’
"Renee, what’s that hawk saying?" Michelle couldn’t help but ask after listening to it squawk for so long.
Zephyr’s feathers instantly bristled. Its gaze turned sharp as it glared at Renee’s phone and snapped, "If you don’t know what you’re talking about, then shut your beak! I’m not a hawk, I’m a peregrine falcon!"
Renee lowered her head, her shoulders trembling as she tried to stifle her laughter. She corrected her friend, "Michelle, you’re mistaken. He’s not a hawk, he’s a peregrine falcon."
Michelle Fuller: "Oh, I really thought it was a hawk."
Renee explained, "He’s upset because Blueberry and the others keep calling him a hawk, so he came to me to complain."
"Oh, so that’s what it was," Michelle said. "I honestly don’t know the difference between a hawk and a falcon."
Zephyr squawked indignantly, "The difference is huge! You humans are so ignorant!"
"Then why don’t you tell us," Renee asked. "What’s the difference between you and a hawk?"
Zephyr declared, "I’m more handsome than a hawk, and I’m smarter than a hawk. You tell me if that’s a big difference or not."
Laughter filled Renee’s eyes. "Yes, yes, the difference is huge. You’re definitely more handsome and smarter."
The praise seemed to mollify Zephyr. "Hmph. Of course I am."
Renee smiled again. "How about this? Tomorrow, I’ll go tell the pets that you’re a peregrine falcon, not a hawk, so they won’t get it wrong again. Would you be satisfied with that?"
"Not satisfied."
"Why not?"
"We’re not waiting until tomorrow. You have to go educate them right now."
Renee: "..."
She said, exasperated, "It’s too late. The pets are all asleep."
"I don’t care. If you don’t go tell them now, then I’m not leaving," Zephyr declared before closing its eyes.
Renee: "..."
’Is he really going to freeload here?’
Hearing no movement, Zephyr peeked one eye open, only to be caught red-handed.
"I don’t know what to do with you." Renee switched to her security camera app to see if the pets were asleep.
The yard was quiet; all the animals were asleep in their own little houses.
It wouldn’t be right to disturb them at this point.
"Alright, you can stay here tonight," Renee said. "I’ll let you have the room."
"Then where will you sleep, Renee?" Michelle asked. "You could always come to my place, hahaha."
Sylvia Brooks chimed in, "You could come to my place, too. It’s a bit closer than Michelle’s."
Renee huffed. "Save your jokes. I’m going to go sleep with my sister."
Before she left, she warned Zephyr one last time, "You can sleep, but don’t touch my things. Got it?"
Zephyr put on its clear, innocent expression again. "Don’t got it."
Renee: "..."
She left the room, her heart filled with apprehension.
「The next day」
Renee got up early and returned to her room, feeling just as apprehensive as she had the night before.
She opened the door, scanned the room, and let out a sigh of relief.
Thankfully, Zephyr had been well-behaved and hadn’t wrecked the place.
As if reading her mind, Zephyr said haughtily, "I have no interest in your human things! I’m hungry. Get me some food, or I’ll go outside and snatch one of those fur babies."
Renee couldn’t understand how he could demand food with such brazen entitlement, but she had to admit, the threat was effective.
"Come on, let’s go downstairs."
Zephyr, completely unafraid of her, flapped its wings and landed familiarly on her shoulder. Its hook-like talons tightened slightly, sending a dull ache through her shoulder even through the fabric.
Renee: "..."
Fortunately, the pain was bearable.
Seeing the large bird perched on Renee’s shoulder, Glenn Zane instinctively asked, "Renee, did you buy a hawk to keep as a pet?"
Zephyr grew furious again. "Screw you! You’re the hawk!"
