Chapter 485: Officer Conway Has It Pretty Tough

Chapter 485: Chapter 485: Officer Conway Has It Pretty Tough

Zachary Conway emerged from around the corner, his gun raised, his expression solemn and righteous.

"Police." He showed his badge and spoke gravely, "We’ve received a report. Susan Roth, Jasper Yates, you are suspected of inciting others to assault Melody Marsh out of jealousy because her college entrance exam scores were better than Theo Yates’s..."

Jasper Yates’s knees went weak with fear. He stammered, "Officer, it’s a misunderstanding... a complete misunderstanding!"

"Yes, Officer!" Susan Roth’s face turned pale with fright, and she began to wail, "Melody is my best friend’s daughter! I watched her grow up, she’s like my own daughter. How could I possibly do something like this to her? I couldn’t be happier that she did well on her exams!"

The couple were about to wet themselves, completely baffled as to how they’d been found out.

"The police will investigate and find out the truth!" As soon as Zachary Conway finished speaking, footsteps approached.

He glanced toward the stairs, where three uniformed officers came around the corner.

Zachary Conway gave a slight nod. "Zenvia Criminal Police, Zachary Conway."

The three officers saluted him. "Draken Police Station..."

Zachary Conway returned the salute. "Thank you for your hard work."

When Jasper Yates and Susan Roth heard Zachary Conway’s identity, their panic intensified. They could feel their pant legs growing damp.

’It’s over, it’s all over. Why is there a criminal police officer from Zenvia here?’

Zachary Conway then introduced Renee Jennings. "This is our criminal investigation team’s consultant, Consultant Jennings."

"Consultant Jennings." The three officers immediately saluted Renee Jennings. "We’ve heard so much about you!"

They had long heard of Renee Jennings’s reputation. They never thought they would actually get to meet her today; it was incredibly fortunate.

"Hello, officers." Renee Jennings nodded with a smile.

Jasper Yates and Susan Roth collapsed to the floor.

Not just a criminal police officer, but a criminal investigation consultant, too.

’It’s over. This time, it’s really, truly over...’

Melody Marsh finally recovered, gripping Renee Jennings’s arm and saying urgently, "Renee, they also drugged my dad! He’s unconscious right now, and I don’t know what kind of drug they used!"

As Melody Marsh spoke, the voice of System 009 also sounded in Renee Jennings’s mind.

[System 009: Congratulations on completing the Level 4 mission "Prevent the Tragedy." You have received your rewards: Human Science Dictionary, 300 points, 3 million cash.]

"I know," Renee Jennings said softly. "I’ll call an ambulance."

"Thank you," Melody Marsh said, her face filled with gratitude.

After dialing for an ambulance, Renee Jennings helped Melody Marsh to her feet. "Can you walk on your own?"

The young girl nodded. "I can."

"Good." Renee Jennings released her hand and walked into the adjacent bedroom. She saw Amanda Lynn lying on the bed and Jenson Marsh collapsed on the sofa.

She looked back at Zachary Conway. "Should we wait for the ambulance here?"

"Yes." Zachary Conway nodded, then turned to speak with the officers from the police station.

"Officer Conway, Consultant Jennings, we’ll take these four, plus the one downstairs, back to the station. We’ll see you there later."

After their exchange, they handcuffed Susan Roth and Jasper Yates and escorted all four suspects downstairs.

Shadow had been downstairs watching Theo Yates. Seeing him get led away by the police, he then trotted happily upstairs.

"WOOF! I’m here!"

"Shadow." Renee Jennings bent down and patted his head, then turned to Melody Marsh. "Melody, this is Shadow. He’s the one who overheard Susan Roth and her husband’s plan to harm you. We have him to thank."

Shadow wagged his tail furiously. "WOOF~ Are you telling someone else how great I am?"

"Yes," Renee Jennings smiled. "You’re a very good boy."

Hearing Renee Jennings’s words, Melody Marsh hurried over to Shadow, squatting down to look at him gratefully. "Shadow, thank you! Thank you and Renee for saving me!"

She bit her lip. "Can I... can I hug you?"

The black dog opened his bright, dark eyes, looked at her, then at Renee Jennings, and let out a soft whine.

Melody Marsh asked expectantly, "Is that a yes?"

Renee Jennings’s lips curved into a smile. "Shadow says yes."

"Thank you!" Melody Marsh moved closer and hugged the fluffy dog, her eyes welling up again. "Shadow, thank you so, so much!"

She knew that if it weren’t for Shadow tonight, and for Renee who could understand him, her future would have been utterly ruined.

Her life might have even ended tonight.

Shadow nuzzled her with his head, whining softly. "ARF! You’re welcome! I’m a helpful doggy! A ’hot dog’ for short!"

A moment later, footsteps once again sounded from downstairs.

Mimi was the first to dash up to the second floor. "MEOW~ Where are the bad guys? This kitty is great at biting bad guys!"

Shadow: "WOOF~ You? You’d better hide behind me. A bad guy could knock you out with one punch!"

Mimi: "MEOW~ Who are you looking down on? This kitty is a Lion Cat. You know what a lion is, right?"

Shadow: "WOOF~ Lion Cat. You know what a cat is, right?"

While the cat and dog were bickering, Michelle Fuller and the other two arrived upstairs.

"Renee, how is it?" Michelle Fuller asked, panting and anxious.

"It’s all over. Don’t worry." Renee Jennings reached out and neatened her slightly messy hair. "It’s a good thing we turned around and came back in time. That’s why Melody is okay."

"As long as she’s okay, that’s all that matters." Michelle Fuller patted her chest and let out a long sigh of relief. "Hilary and I were on pins and needles the whole way here."

Jude Sherman had an amused expression. "Those two are too kindhearted. They couldn’t stop worrying about it."

Melody Marsh stood up, walked over to them, and bowed deeply. "Thank you all for being so concerned about me. I’m truly grateful!"

"No, no, don’t thank us." Michelle Fuller quickly waved her hands. "We didn’t really do anything to help. We just worried ourselves sick."

Hilary nodded. "Yeah, this was all thanks to Ms. Jennings."

"It was a team effort," Renee Jennings said. Just as she finished, the sound of an ambulance siren drifted up from downstairs.

"The ambulance is here," Zachary Conway said. "I’ll go down and let them in."

Michelle Fuller watched his retreating back, her tone full of admiration. "Not bad. That young man is pretty diligent."

Renee Jennings raised an eyebrow slightly. "’Young man’? You’re younger than he is."

"How old is he?"

"Twenty-five."

"He’s only one year older than me."

Jude Sherman raised an eyebrow with a smile and said languidly, "I thought Officer Conway was Miss Fuller’s boyfriend."

"Huh?" Michelle Fuller’s eyes went wide with surprise. "Jude, where did you get that idea? I don’t even know him well."

Jude Sherman: "Well, then I’d guess this Officer Conway is definitely interested in you."

"Oh my god!" Michelle Fuller was completely shocked. "Jude, why on earth would you think that?"

"That Officer Conway is always looking at you," Jude Sherman explained. "Every time I’ve happened to glance at him, I’ve noticed he’s looking at you."

"What?" Michelle Fuller shook her head vigorously. "Impossible. Absolutely impossible! We haven’t even added each other on WeChat!"

Zachary Conway was just leading the medical team upstairs when he overheard Jude Sherman say something peculiar.

"It seems Officer Conway is having a rather tough time."
