Chapter 695: Chapter 695: Same Birthday
Phoebe Sawyer stared blankly at the line of people.
Sylvia Brooks didn’t say anything either, her gaze lowered to her phone.
"Summer," Phoebe Sawyer suddenly called out softly.
Sylvia Brooks locked her phone and looked up at her. "What’s wrong?"
Phoebe Sawyer looked back at her, her eyes slightly red. "Summer, that text message from the other day was real."
Sylvia Brooks frowned, asking in confusion, "What?"
"The text that said I’m not Mom’s biological daughter..." Phoebe Sawyer’s voice was choked with sobs. "It’s true."
Sylvia Brooks’s expression turned grave. "Phoebe, who told you it was true?"
"It was Mom." Phoebe Sawyer sniffled, sobbing as she spoke. "Tonight, after dinner, Mom and I were taking a walk at the villa, and she suddenly told me... that we’re not related by blood."
There were other customers around, so Phoebe Sawyer buried her face in her hands, a suppressed sob escaping from her throat.
Sylvia Brooks’s heart tightened. She placed a hand on her back and gently rubbed it a few times. "Phoebe, did your mom explain the reason clearly?"
Phoebe Sawyer lifted her tear-streaked face and nodded.
Sylvia Brooks took a pack of tissues from her purse, pulled one out to wipe away her friend’s tears, and said softly, "Phoebe, if you don’t mind, can you tell me about it?"
Phoebe Sawyer sniffled and said in a low voice, "Mom told me that back then, my birth mother and she gave birth at the same hospital, and a nurse mixed up several of the babies..."
After hearing her out, Sylvia Brooks’s frown deepened. "Phoebe, your situation sounds a lot like Renee’s."
"Renee Jennings?" Phoebe Sawyer asked, confused.
"Yes." Sylvia Brooks nodded. "Do you remember what she told us the other day?"
Phoebe Sawyer bit her lip and said hesitantly, "She said she wanted to help Aunt Rae find her biological daughter."
"That’s right," Sylvia Brooks explained. "Your situations are very similar. You were both switched at birth in the hospital, and you share the same birthday. Phoebe, which hospital were you born in?"
"Kenwood Hospital."
"Born at Kenwood Hospital on September 1st, 2001?"
"Yes."
Sylvia Brooks subconsciously glanced at the figure who had just finished ordering and was walking back. "So was Renee."
Phoebe Sawyer’s heart suddenly leaped. She followed Sylvia’s gaze, and a horrifying thought popped into her head.
’It couldn’t be...’
Her hands, resting on her knees, clenched unconsciously.
’Could Renee Jennings... be Mom’s biological daughter?’
Phoebe Sawyer whipped her head around and looked nervously at Sylvia Brooks. "Summer, do you think Renee could be... I think I should go."
She subconsciously wanted to run away.
Sylvia Brooks froze for a couple of seconds. Seeing her get up, she quickly reached out and held her in place. "Phoebe, wait. You’ve misunderstood."
"What do you mean?" Phoebe Sawyer asked in a hushed voice, her eyes darting toward the approaching Renee Jennings.
"You think Renee is your mom’s biological daughter, don’t you?" Sylvia Brooks asked.
Phoebe Sawyer slowly nodded. "Yes. Is she... not?"
"No." Sylvia Brooks gave a helpless smile. She waited until Renee Jennings had sat down before saying, "Renee’s biological parents are the Morgans. Vincent Morgan’s mother is her real birth mother."
"What’s wrong?" Renee Jennings looked at the two of them, confused. "Why are you suddenly talking about the Morgans?"
Phoebe Sawyer immediately looked embarrassed. "Sorry for bringing up your private matters."
"It’s fine." Renee Jennings shook her head with a light chuckle. "I was just curious."
Sylvia Brooks looked at Phoebe Sawyer, asking for her permission with her eyes.
Phoebe Sawyer clenched her fists, took a deep breath, and slowly nodded. "I don’t mind either. Summer, you can tell everyone."
So, Sylvia Brooks explained her situation.
In truth, everyone present already knew, but they all had a tacit understanding not to speak of it.
It wasn’t that they were intentionally trying to hide it, nor did they want to see Phoebe Sawyer in pain.
It was just that, in their eyes, this was the way to cause Phoebe Sawyer the least amount of harm.
Everyone wanted to protect her and hoped she would have fewer worries.
"Phoebe..." Renee Jennings gazed at Phoebe Sawyer, a glimmer of hope shining in her eyes. "You couldn’t be my mom’s biological daughter, could you...?"
Phoebe Sawyer froze for a moment, then waved her hands helplessly. "Renee, it’s probably a misunderstanding."
Just like how she had mistakenly thought Renee Jennings was her mom’s biological daughter a moment ago.
Besides, she had just wanted to avoid seeing Renee Jennings, and she wondered if Renee would also...
"But it’s a glimmer of hope, at least," Renee Jennings said excitedly. "Phoebe, you know I’ve always wanted to help my mom find her biological daughter."
As soon as she said it, she corrected herself. "No, that’s not right. It’s not just me; my whole family really wants to find her."
Phoebe Sawyer blinked, unsure of how to respond for a moment.
She even wondered if she could have acted like Renee Jennings had, had their roles been reversed.
In that moment, she suddenly felt like a selfish person.
She didn’t want the mom she had lived with for twenty-four years to love another child.
Seeing her silence, Renee Jennings didn’t press her to speak.
After a little while, a waiter brought over four bowls of hot, steaming black sesame paste with milk. The rich, milky aroma, blended with the unique, roasted scent of sesame, instantly filled the air.
Sawyer hesitated for a couple of seconds before breaking the silence with a smile. "This looks delicious."
"Yeah," Sylvia Brooks chimed in. "Good thing Renee and I ordered the same thing."
Sawyer raised her brows. "Me too."
Phoebe Sawyer remained silent, her thoughts a million miles away.
Renee Jennings took out her phone, snapped a picture of the sesame paste, and sent it to Michelle Fuller: "This sesame paste smells amazing. I’m bringing you here tomorrow!"
Half an hour later, they had finished their sesame paste.
The group left the dessert shop and walked back to the pet hospital to get their cars.
Phoebe Sawyer walked with her head down, her mind a tangled mess.
"Phoebe," Renee Jennings said, walking up beside her.
Phoebe Sawyer turned her head to look at her, not knowing what to say.
Renee Jennings met her slightly confused eyes and said softly, "If you ever want someone to talk to, I’m always available."
Hearing this, Phoebe Sawyer’s lips moved. She nodded. "Thanks."
"Well, see you." Renee Jennings waved to her.
Before they knew it, they had arrived back at the pet hospital.
Phoebe Sawyer watched her back, bit her lip, and finally spoke up. "Renee, I’ll come with you to see Swallow tomorrow."
Renee Jennings stopped, turned back to look at her, and a faint smile touched her lips. "Okay. I’ll come get you tomorrow."
Phoebe Sawyer wanted to say she didn’t have to, that she could come on her own, but Renee Jennings had already pulled open the car door and slipped into the driver’s seat.
She rolled down the window. "See you tomorrow."
Phoebe Sawyer stared blankly as Renee Jennings’s car disappeared into the night.
"Phoebe." Sylvia Brooks brought her back from her thoughts. "Are you okay? Do you need me to go get a drink with you?"
Phoebe Sawyer shook her head and gave a bitter smile. "My head is already a mess right now. I don’t feel clear-headed at all."
Sylvia Brooks pressed her lips together, thought for a couple of seconds, and reached out to give her a hug. "Then let me give you a hug. It’s going to be okay."
