Roadmap to the Boundless Sky

Book 4 Chapter 61: Bounty

Book 4, Chapter 61: Bounty

The sight of Chen Chuan grabbing the metal ball with his bare hand stunned the young man, and disbelief shone on his face.

He had thrown the metal ball with such great strength that while blocking it was possible, it would definitely damage the metal ball. Chen Chuan, though, had managed to grab it without even cracking it, which showed that he had negated all the power in it.

Chen Chuan had done that while walking forward, and that intimidated the young man to his soul. Even his brother couldn’t do this, even though he could catch the metal balls the young man threw at him.

With a squeeze, the metal ball shattered, and bits of it fell on the ground.

The sight of Chen Chuan coming closer made goosebumps break out on his skin. With a few kicks, he sent most of the metal balls on the roof flying at Chen Chuan, then jumped down and started running away. Long-distance attacks were his specialty, while melee fights were his weakness. Besides, fear had bloomed in his heart, so he did his best to get away.

Chen Chuan cast a glance at the metal balls coming at him like a torrential downpour before dashing forward. An invisible wave of refined force formed in front of him and shattered all the metal balls that were about to land on him.

In an instant, he closed the distance between him and the building where the young man once stood. Then, he proceeded to run through it. The remaining metal balls on the roof rolled away. A breath later, he arrived behind the young man.

Despite the shock of Chen Chuan arriving so quickly, the young man reacted on time. He jumped, stepped on the wall beside him, spun around, and flung his arm. Even if he wasn’t throwing anything, his movement created an explosive boom.

This counterattack was his family’s secret technique designed to hit enemies chasing after them. Since it was quick and sudden, it usually cracked the enemy’s head open.

Chen Chuan smacked it away. The moment their arms touched, a loud bang shot out. Half of the young man’s arm blasted apart. Blood gushed out, and torn flesh as well as shattered bone flew outward. The young man instantly lost his balance.

He had been moving at high speed, so he fell forward. Chen Chuan reached out, grabbed his shoulder, and injected a wave of grappling-type refined force into him. It went into his neck and spine, which caused the young man to turn numb. His body froze in midair; he could only move his eyeballs. Fear filled his eyes, and the arrogance from before was nowhere to be seen.

Some distance away from them was someone with a rifle trained on Chen Chuan. His head was within the scope’s sight.

Just as the person was about to pull the trigger, someone pushed down on his rifle, and the sniper looked over in shock. The man with the ropes had come over at some point in time and was shaking his head. “You won’t hit him, and the moment you shoot, you’ll end up drawing him to us.”

The sniper scowled, but removed his finger from the trigger. “I don’t think he noticed me,” he grumbled.

Most powerful martial artists felt threatened when a rifle was trained on them. The sniper had kept his rifle pointed at Chen Chuan all this while, but the enemy showed no intention of dodging, and not once did he look over. It was as if he never noticed the sniper, and it made him quite displeased.

“It’s not that he didn’t sense danger, but that even if you shot at him, you wouldn’t pierce his head. Your bullets aren’t a threat to him. That’s why he’s ignoring you,” the other man said sternly.

“This lead investigator has definitely practiced some kind of powerful body hardening-type refined force. Our operation has failed. Let’s retreat. If we don’t start running away now, we might all die here.”

“What about Ladonakim?”

“We need to save our own skins,” the man said instead of giving a straight answer.

A small airship flew over and cast down a rope ladder. They grabbed it and immediately flew into the distance.

Chen Chuan whipped his head around at the airship. Then, he glanced at a metal ball by his feet. It was one of those he had knocked away. He grabbed it, tapped his foot against the ground, twisted his waist, made his mutated tissue channel power to his arm, and threw the metal ball.

The man with the ropes sensed something off and let go of the rope ladder while he grabbed the end of the ropes with one hand. He yanked at them with his other hand so that they formed a net in front of him.

The metal ball landed in the net. He could feel his arms tensing up and being yanked back so swiftly that he heard the bones cracking. The bones in his fingers almost broke, and he was dragged backward by inertia.

The metal ball continued moving forward until it landed on his chest with a bang. He was thrown back and fell from the air. Before he could hit the ground, he did a back flip and landed with a bent knee as well as a palm outstretched. He had to do this to stabilize himself, which caused a loud sound.

It was only then that the metal ball’s momentum died, and it fell on the ground.

Before the man could catch his breath, the wall across from him exploded. The rubble rolled on the ground, and a person wearing a protective mask stepped forward.

His heart jumped to his throat, and he tightened his grip around the ropes.

His eyes were glued to Chen Chuan. He had seen the battle earlier, and Chen Chuan wasn’t someone he could go up against. It would have been best to surrender, but he had signed a high-paying mercenary contract, and that stopped him. He had to fight with all his strength.

Once Chen Chuan was a certain distance away, the pressure he gave the man increased. He no longer dared to stay still. With a growl, he shot to his feet and threw the ropes forward. Due to his refined force, the ropes grew longer and went charging at Chen Chuan like five whips.

The length of ropes like this changed based on how much refined force was injected into them. They could also be firm or flexible depending on the type. They were hard to block too, so once he caught an enemy’s limbs, his unique technique could drag the enemy down or cause them to lose balance. After that, he could do whatever he wanted with them.

Chen Chuan flung his arm outward, and his Heartborn Force forced the ropes away. They never even touched him. Right after, the ropes spread out in the shape of a claw. There were several small, metal hooks at their tips. If they touched the target’s limbs or body, they would sink into skin and yank off flesh along with mutated tissue.

Chen Chuan did not wait for the ropes to land on him. With his free hand, he grabbed the gun distributed to lead investigators and aimed it at the man.

At this point, he was only five meters away.

Shocked, the man ducked to avoid, but the muzzle kept following him.

Bang!

And it was followed by another shot, and another...

Chen Chuan shot at the man six times. Since they were so close to each other, every shot landed. Even though the man managed to avoid his vitals getting hit, he still trembled whenever he was shot. After the sixth shot, six bloody holes appeared on his torso and limbs, and his bones and organs could be seen through the holes. One of his leg bones got cracked as well.

The man tumbled to the side before collapsing on the ground. He wanted to use his blood essence to recover, but realized that this was meaningless and would just prolong his torment. He had already done his duty to his client, so he fell back on the ground with his limbs spread and stopped resisting.

When the sniper saw this, he thanked his lucky stars. If he hadn’t decided to not shoot Chen Chuan earlier, he might have ended up like this.

Yet at that moment, something fell past him with a loud whistle, and the rope ladder was cut through. He dropped from the sky.

Caught off guard, he looked up and saw a swarm of bioweapons flying over. The mercenaries in the perimeter opened fire on them.

He couldn’t take everything in before he crashed into the building. Then, several bioweapons headed toward him.

***

Chen Chuan took a look at the bioweapons. He had requested all those in the area to be sent to him before coming. He had also mobilized a portion of the Resolution Department officers and City Patrol in Oceanway District. Yuan Qiuyuan, Qin Qingque, and Su Wei led those teams.

In order to make sure no word of it leaked out, Chen Chuan asked Safe Shield to perform a domain lockdown of the area as well as banned any of the officers and City Patrol from spreading word about it.

Since the main threats had been taken out, the remaining mercenaries didn’t put up much of a resistance, and they were all taken out.

City Patrol followed the Resolution Department officers and charged in to handcuff all the mercenaries who survived. They intended to bring them back to the department to interrogate them.

Chen Chuan went to the side, tapped on his Realm Pass, and contacted Wu Quan to tell him about the situation.

“Got it. Bring them back,” Wu Quan instructed.

“Okay,” Chen Chuan answered.

“Fang Zhixin was Lao Chen’s assistant, wasn't he?” Wu Quan asked.

“Yes.”

“Act based on your judgment. Just make sure to wrap things up properly.”

“Got it,” Chen Chuan responded.

The National Ad Hoc Special Operations Committee had been looking for Fang Zhixin to investigate him, but he was declared an innocent man the moment Chen Bitong was stated to have died a hero. That was why the Resolution Department had no mission to capture Fang Zhixin. They also had no intention of helping the National Ad Hoc Special Operations Committee.

Chen Chuan went back to the abandoned shop. Fang Zhixin was still inside instead of using the chaos to escape. Chen Chuan gave him a onceover before asking, “What were you trying to tell me?”
