Roadmap to the Boundless Sky

Book 4 Chapter 107: On Standby

Book 4, Chapter 107: On Standby

At noon, Chen Chuan organized all the things he needed to bring with him and put them into separate compartments in a sturdy luggage bag that was about half the height of an adult man.

He didn’t intend to bring anyone with him to the merged space. He alone would be enough.

If this were a regular mission, perhaps his merged space unit would be able to help him, but this time, he was going up against elite martial artists from the Union and the Linacrox Union. Every fight was going to be difficult, and martial artists who hadn’t reached Chen Chuan’s strength couldn’t join it at all. They would be nothing more than a liability.

Instead, if Chen Chuan were alone, he wouldn’t have to worry and could bring out his full strength.

Still, that didn’t mean that he was going in without any helpers; he was going to bring Dawncall with him.

Aerial surveillance was useful at all times, since it could help him detect enemies and danger ahead of time.

While the merged space didn’t have any major domains, Chen Chuan could bring a small domain entity with him that could help him maintain communications within two kilometers. That alone would be enough. Even if something happened to it, he could still communicate with Dawncall through his biofield and mind.

Dawncall had guided its mutated tissue’s growth and gone through some special training, but it hadn’t gotten any combat experience in Central City.

The growth of mutated tissue depended on the environment and one’s opponents. Sufficient external stimulation was required to draw out the body’s potential.

Without a doubt, the merged space was a suitable place for that. Even though the creatures there were fearsome, Chen Chuan could help Dawncall fight and train it to get stronger.

There was one problem, though: Corruption existed in the merged space, which could cause the tissue in a martial artist’s body to vitalize. Based on what Chen Chuan had learned, the corruption affected all creatures to a certain degree, even if it was the worst on humans.

Usually, the military overcame this through medicine. While long-term use would cause the body to become resistant toward it, most of the creatures the military brought into the merged space were treated as expendable. They usually perished before it happened, so they didn’t need to care about this.

When it came to Dawncall, Chen Chuan had no intention of treating this lightly.

After some careful consideration, he thought of something: If martial artists refused to take medicine, they needed to use a certain breathing technique to ward off the corruption.

Non-human creatures didn’t have the right instincts on how to resist corruption. If their owners were willing to put in the effort to train them, they could, but it was usually unnecessary. Unless, of course, the creature in question was an especially useful being.

Dawncall was different from the average creature. It was exceptionally smart, which had shown itself when it was being trained. It learned many things immediately, so it was possible it could pick up a breathing technique.

Chen Chuan logged onto the World Ring Defense System’s platform and retrieved loads of breathing techniques from its database. After making some comparisons, he found the main similarity among them. Then, based on this foundation, he created a breathing technique based on Dawncall’s characteristics.

Since he didn’t have much time, Chen Chuan decided to imprint the breathing technique into Dawncall’s mind through a mental mark. At the same time, he sent his refined force into it to help it get used to it.

Due to all of that, Dawncall formed a basic muscle memory for the breathing technique in less than thirty minutes. Once Chen Chuan pulled back, it could use it on its own. All that was left for it now was to get used to it.

Chen Chuan nodded. Now, it all depended on whether Dawncall could get used to the merged space. If it couldn’t, he would give it medicine for a while before sending it back.

He took a few tubes of nutritional paste and went to sit down cross-legged and read what Zhuan Liang had given him.

After skimming through the contents, he found that it was just as Zhuan Liang said. The technique to get to the Fourth Limit wasn’t hard. What was hard was the preparations required to take that final step, along with setting up the necessary foundation.

Some medicines were also needed for it.

The box Zhuan Liang had given him contained the medicines needed to get to the Fourth Limit.

They were actually difficult to come by. Even though they weren’t monopolized by the higher-ups, like pure essence was, they couldn’t be found on the market. Chen Chuan would have to apply for it from the government. Those who didn’t join any faction were assessed and repeatedly questioned by the higher-ups, since the path up was strictly regulated.

Fortunately, such obstacles disappeared after Chen Chuan joined the purity faction. The faction got its medicines from a direct supplier, and the headquarters distributed it as they wished. Chen Chuan didn’t need to think about anything in regards to it.

Hence, the obstacle that was supposed to keep him stuck for a long while disappeared without any effort on his side. This was the benefit of joining a faction, specifically, the purity faction. He was sure that other factions had different rules.

He couldn’t really tell what the green mandarin orange was supposed to do, but Xue Shou had told him to eat it when the time was right, so it was clear that it had its use.

After all, Xue Shou was the one who taught him his mental training techniques. Perhaps there were some unique things about it.

While planning his training schedule, Chen Chuan heard a chime. It was a message from the World Ring Defense System telling him that they had coordinated and approved his departure time.

He would be leaving at 5 a.m. the next morning.

Chen Chuan nodded. This time suited him perfectly. Since he didn’t know how Xu Chan’s team was doing, it would be better for him to go to the merged space as soon as possible.

He checked the time and found that it was a little past 1 a.m.. He had already gotten everything settled in the department and made every arrangement possible for the units. Border Fusion was currently facing no problems either.

As for United Might, he had already given instructions for his team to push things forward according to regular procedures and ignore everything else. They would deal with the specifics once he was back.

Honestly, he had no idea how long he would be staying in the merged space. Once he ventured deep into it, he wouldn’t be able to communicate with the outside world, so he needed to give his close friends and family a heads-up as well.

He stood up and called Gao Ming to tell him that he was going on a mission. He then asked his cousin to explain things to his family if they called.

After the call, he left the training room, took a shower, changed into a clean set of clothes, left his house, and drove to Majestic Light District.

When he reached the soldiers’ residential area in Verdant Tree Street, he was allowed entry right away, and the guards saluted him. He soon reached the park there.

Chen Xiaojin was training. After Chen Chuan's guidance, he had improved significantly, which made it clear that he had been training hard instead of slacking off.

His physical abilities, in particular, had improved by leaps and bounds. This was something that couldn’t be improved through regular training, so the Enlightenment Fruit must have kicked into effect.

From all of his friends who ate the Enlightenment Fruit, only Lu Fang, Wei Dong, and Luo Kaiyuan had gotten benefits. The others didn’t feel anything. By the looks of it now, Chen Xiaojin was among the lucky ones.

Chen Xiaojin saw Chen Chuan get out of the car and lit up. He ran over and bowed. “Mr. Chen.”

The sight of the much livelier Chen Xiaojin made it clear that he, too, saw his own improvement, and it grew his confidence.

Chen Chuan could tell that while Chen Xiaojin was determined, he had low self-esteem because he thought that he couldn’t compare to his siblings and that Chen Bitong was disappointed in him. The reason he kept training was in order to prove himself.

But at the end of the day, talent was the deciding factor, and no amount of hard work could replace a natural gift.

Things were different now, though. The Enlightenment Fruit had boosted his potential. Even though he was still weaker than his siblings, the gap wasn’t so great that he couldn’t catch up. With his dogged determination, he was bound to go far in his path as a martial artist.

“I was watching you just now. You trained according to what I taught you, which is good. From now on, increase your sets to eighty a day. If you don’t feel any discomfort, you can push to one hundred in ten days. We can decide your further training plans after I come back,” Chen Chuan said.

For some reason, Chen Xiaojin instinctively asked, “Are you going to the merged space, Mr. Chen?”

Chen Chuan gave him a curious glance before nodding. “I’ll come back as soon as possible. Don’t go outside until I do. Just continue training here.”

Chen Xiaojin bobbed his head and said seriously, “I’ll wait for you to come back, Mr. Chen.”

“Okay,” Chen Chuan answered and stayed there for a while. Then, he drove to Deep End District and stopped in front of Lu Fang’s martial arts school. Lu Fang had sent him a message telling him that his mutated tissue had been growing really obviously, and he was getting better with his technique as well.

Since he had never experienced such a thing before, he asked Chen Chuan whether it was because of the Enlightenment Fruit.

Chen Chuan couldn’t say for sure without seeing him, so he went over to meet Lu Fang and used his biofield to observe him. “If I’m not mistaken, you’re about to reach the Third Limit.”

Lu Fang was stunned upon hearing this. Even though reaching the Third Limit had always been his goal, he had never paid attention to his progress, so he wasn’t expecting to hear this. For a time, a complicated mix of excitement and melancholy filled his heart.

Chen Chuan, however, didn’t find this surprising. In terms of talent, Lu Fang was, without a doubt, the best in his batch. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have become the vice president of the Aspiration Club.

If Lu Fang had been able to join the main campus and gotten enough resources, perhaps he would have already reached the Third Limit by now.

Certain methods were necessary to reach the Third Limit, and the best way to do it was through a breathing technique. Cao Guiqi had taught it to Chen Chuan.

At his current stage, when he observed another person at the same stage as he had been, he got a lot of additional insights, especially after improving his mental energy. It allowed him to do many things he couldn’t do in the past.

After some thinking, he said, “Relax, Lu Fang. Don’t think too much about this. I need to go on a work trip, but once the time is right, I’ll tell you how to reach the Third Limit.”
