Book 4, Chapter 169: Trouble Resurfacing

Xu Chan took a few steps back after killing his opponent. Yan Zhiwen had nothing supporting him anymore, so he fell forward and crashed into the ground with a loud bang. A huge wound could be seen on the back of his head, and it was clear that there was no saving him anymore.

Regardless of whether it was the armed combatants or the rest of Xu Chan’s team, both sides failed to register what had happened. They hadn’t expected Xu Chan to win the fight this fast.

With a flick of his arm, Xu Chan sheathed his sword and stared at Yan Zhiwen’s corpse.

Yan Zhiwen had been quite strong, only slightly weaker than Xu Chan, but data on paper wasn’t the sole deciding factor of whether a person could win a fight. Their fighting experience and battle performance played a role too.

Usually, even if there was a slight difference between two people, it wasn’t to the point where Xu Chan could overpower Yan Zhiwen.

However, there was a difference between them that decided everything: Xu Chan had just returned from battle, and he had stepped into the fight with the mindset of killing or being killed. Meanwhile, Yan Zhiwen hadn’t adjusted his mindset. Whilst he was larping about using force and exercising the law, he hadn’t realized that while their war against outside enemies had ended, their internal war had quietly begun.

This slight difference alone led to this ending.

All the armed combatants from the Crisis Management Center were filled with fear. Even though their guns were pointed toward Xu Chan’s group, none of them dared to pull the trigger.

They knew well how strong Yan Zhiwen was, and if he could be killed in one hit, what was the point in them firing their guns? Since Xu Chan dared to kill Yan Zhiwen, his group could also kill them without blinking.

Yan Zhiwen’s assistant immediately reported this matter to the Crisis Management Center in terror. Then, the center reported it to the politicians in charge of this matter.

The politicians hadn’t expected Xu Chan to actually kill Yan Zhiwen. Upon hearing this, they were shocked. Where did Xu Chan find the guts to do this?

Their first reaction wasn’t to pursue the matter, though. It was to panic. They wondered whether the Department of Administrative Affairs and the World Ring Defense System had ordered Xu Chan to do this. Was the Department of Administrative Affairs about to take action against them?

Then, they contacted the municipal government and checked on the situation on other fronts. However, they didn’t detect anything abnormal from either the Department of Administrative Affairs or the World Ring Defense System.

Once they were sure that this was just a scare, they issued an order to arrest and detain Xu Chan’s group for breaking Central City’s laws and killing a law enforcer. They pinpointed Chen Chuan as the one issuing the commands. They even had the media spread this matter to all corners of Central City to stir up public opinion.

Wang Weiguang was still lingering in the reception hall in the Resolution Department while waiting for news from the municipal government.

He had come today because the municipal government wanted him to bring Han Fu out and help him seize power.

While Han Fu was being detained and had all his power and authority removed, they hadn’t gone through the entire procedure to remove him. After all, Han Fu was a lead investigator, so he wasn’t someone they could take down with ease. It was the same for any high officer. If they wanted to completely remove them from power and implicate them, the procedure would take at least a month.

It had been less than half a month since Han Fu was caught, so he was still a lead investigator in name. If he were to be released, he could still take over the Resolution Department.

This was all in theory, of course. With Safe Shield around, Chen Chuan’s authority needed to be removed and the evidence and testimonies submitted had to be disproved by someone with more power or special evidence to cancel the examination procedure for Han Fu’s case to be reopened.

Wang Weiguang didn’t actually think Han Fu’s release was possible.

But that was fine. The last lead investigator of the Resolution Department was gone, and it was likely he would never come back. Right now, Xu Jinxin was running the Resolution Department, but he was a squad captain, just like Wang Weiguang, which meant that he couldn’t order him around. If Xu Jinxin and his people were to disappear, Wang Weiguang could very likely become a lead investigator.

Hence, from his angle, Han Fu being done for was actually good.

Just then, Safe Shield said, “Captain Wang, your request to meet Han Fu has been approved. You can now head to the detention cell for dangerous criminals.”

Wang Weiguang was surprised. They actually let him inside? He told his team to stay in the reception hall while he took the elevator down to the underground detention cell, even though he still remained doubtful. After going through the checks, he got to Han Fu’s detention cell.

As he stared at the skeletal Han Fu hanging off the wall, sympathy rose within him, and he went forward. “It’s been a long while, Lead Investigator Han.”

Han Fu slowly brought his head up. Since his bloodshot eyes no longer had any eyelids, fear rose in Wang Weiguang’s heart upon meeting his gaze.

“How did you get in?”

Wang Weiguang took a moment to compose himself before smiling. “You should trust the municipal government more, Lead Investigator Han. Once they wanted me to see you, they made sure I got to do so.”

He then gave a meaningful smile before going forward and yanking out an implanted vein that he inserted into Han Fu’s chest. Then, liquid as red as blood flowed through it.

Han Fu spasmed violently. His originally shrivelled heart was filled, and blood as well as flesh started growing on him.

Once all the medicine was injected, Wang Weiguang removed the vein and took a few steps back. “This is a new medicine from the Union. It can help you recover quickly, but a martial artist can only use it once in his life, though I’m sure that after this, you won’t need it anymore.”

A few minutes passed, and Han Fu stopped twitching. His muscles, tendons, fascia, and mutated tissue all grew back. “What’s the situation outside?”

“How should I say this? Lead Investigator Chen has gone to the merged space, while Director Wu is still under interrogation. Xu Jinxin is in charge of the Resolution Department’s daily operations.”

As a former lead investigator, Han Fu naturally knew what this meant. His eyes flashed, and with two loud snaps, he broke free of the shackles around his legs and wrists and fell down from the wall.

Skin hadn’t covered his body yet, so he looked like a red, bloody, skinless corpse. It was an image straight out of a nightmare.

Wang Weiguang tossed a glass tube over. “The municipal government asked me to give this to you.”

Han Fu caught it. “What is it?”

“Since you’ve helped the municipal government so much in the past, it’s only natural that you get rewarded for it.”

Han Fu took a look. He was surprised and delighted. “Pure essence?!”

“Exactly. Honestly, we can only rise to power if we work with the municipal government,” Wang Weiguang said with a grin.

Han Fu didn’t dally by commenting on it. He immediately removed the stopper and drank the entire thing.

He was regrowing his blood and flesh nonstop, and after taking the pure essence, the process sped up. In less than ten minutes, he was fully recovered. Even though his new skin was quite pale, his eyes were filled with a unique light.

He brought his hand up slowly, and wisps of light started shining on it.

Spirit sense.

Wang Weiguang was shocked and wary when he saw this, and he took two steps back. “Lead Investigator Han, is that...”

Han Fu stared at the glowing ball of light. With his progress, he was only a step away from acquiring spirit sense, but he lacked resources and willpower, so he was never able to obtain it.

Lately, though, his body and mind had gone through hell and back. Now, with medicine from the Union and pure essence, he recovered and took that final step.

Of course, the gap in the World Ring played a deciding role. It let him draw on that power more easily. Once he was familiar with it, he could control it even after the gap closed.

When he remembered how brutally Chen Chuan had beaten him up, a cold glare shone in his eyes. If he had fought Chen Chuan with his current strength, things wouldn’t have ended that way.

Wang Weiguang took a moment to compose himself. “Congratulations, Lead Investigator Han. The municipal government asked me to cooperate with you to take control of the Resolution Department. Should we gather manpower?”

“No one in the department trusts me anymore, and all my subordinates have been locked up in different places,” Han Fu replied.

Wang Weiguang gave him an unimpressed stare. “I’m sure that you still have some subordinates. You’ve been working in the Resolution Department for years, so you must have some backup.

“Besides, I brought some men over myself. They’re all reinforcements from Gray Shell Office. Take charge, Lead Investigator Han, while I’ll help you. We’ll get rid of all those people who are against you, then recruit those with some sense in their heads. After that, we can release all of your subordinates. With all that done, it shouldn’t be hard to take control of the Resolution Department. As for your crimes, the municipal government will hire a lawyer for you. You don’t have to worry about that.”

Han Fu didn’t think that things could be solved that easily. His release was bizarre in itself, but he was out, and that was more important than anything. He had even gained control of spirit sense, so he could do many things that he didn’t dare to do in the past.

Wang Weiguang suddenly got a chime in his Realm Pass. He took a look at the message before looking at Han Fu with nervousness and excitement. “Lead Investigator Han, Lead Investigator Chen has come back, and he’s on his way back to the Resolution Department. But he did something stupid. On the way, Xu Chan killed Yan Zhiwen of the Crisis Management Center, so the municipal government has released an order to arrest him. This is a great chance to get rid of all of them!”

Upon hearing Chen Chuan’s name, deep hatred burned in Han Fu’s eyes, but he noticed another person’s name being mentioned, and he asked tentatively, “Xu Chan is with him?”

“That’s right, but you don’t have to worry. The municipal government has sent people to capture him. They’re already on their way, so they should be here soon.

“Now that you’ve acquired spirit sense, you should have no problem fighting against Lead Investigator Chen, right?”

Han Fu’s eyes grew cold, and the light on his fist flashed. “I’m going to return all the pain and suffering I’ve felt back to him, twofold.”
